Summary:
As cities evolve and resources shift with time, spaces within those cities are often left fallow and abandoned. "Cyclical City" tells the stories behind these sites, from Philadelphia's Liberty Lands park to Lisbon's Green Plan, and it looks at the ways in which these narratives can be leveraged toward future engagement and use.
Jill Desimini posits a fundamental role for spatial design practice to transform abandoned urban landscapes through time. She argues for approaches that promote the specific affordances of the land itself (hydrology, vegetation, topography, geology, infrastructural capacity, occupation potential); the importance of cyclical change; and the particularities of the cultural, political, and physical context. These themes are explored in five cities: Philadelphia, Berlin, Lisbon, Amsterdam, and Saint Louis, and across centuries, from periods of great upheaval to ones of relative stability and even economic growth.

Summary:
The heem parks (parks that predominately feature native wild plants) De Braak, the K. Landwehrpark and, especially, the Jac.P. Thijsse Park in Amstelveen in the Netherlands, have been important sources of inspiration for landscape architects, gardeners, and nature lovers throughout the world since they were first laid out over fifty years ago. This new book looks at the extraordinary history of these parks and the work of the landscape architect Christiaan Broerse and his colleague, the botanist Koos Landwehr. It also details Broerse and Landwehr’s creative and highly original use of a great variety of native plants in these parks. Bekkers analyses the parks as integral elements of Amsterdam’s urban expansion plans and demonstrates how successfully Broerse and Landwehr resolved the tension between the conservation movement and city planners. He shows too how interest in the Amstelveen heem parks have grown over time. These parks have played a key role, for instance, in the increasing emphasis on the use of native plants in the layout of green areas. The book is richly illustrated, with specially commissioned full-colour photographs by Jan Derwig and aerial photographs by Jan Schot. Also included are historical illustrations and sketches.

Summary:
Once referred to as Toronto’s ''accidental wilderness,'' Tommy Thompson Park is now recognized as a fortuitous urban miracle. Initially created as a landfill site on the city’s rapidly developing waterfront, the park’s physical and ecological footprint have grown dramatically. Forests, grasslands, and wildlife now thrive – all within a stone’s throw of some of the most densely populated areas of North America’s fourth-largest city. ''Accidental wilderness'' is a collection of essays curated by internationally recognized landscape architect and original designer of Tommy Thompson Park, Walter H. Kehm, complemented by a collection of photographs by renowned landscape photographer Robert Burley. The book explores the city’s port origins; the park’s master plan principles and design; the native-plant succession process; the park’s unique flora and fauna; public advocacy; and public recreation in the park and its effect on mental, physical, and spiritual health.
