Summary:
This exhibition catalogue examines Palladio's personal development and architecture, his influence on others achieved through his I Quattro Libri dell'Architettura, the subsequent dissemination of his teachings through translations and pattern books in Britain and America, and the influence of Palladianism on architecture in the New World. The promulgation of Palladian principles resulted in new and original interpretations that took firm hold in America, influencing both grand formal buildings and smaller utilitarian structures. The drawings are supported by numerous architectural models. Three large examples--the Pantheon, Villa Rotunda, and Jefferson's unrealized design for the White House--programmatically illustrate the journey from Rome to America. Smaller models along with rare architectural texts and pattern books, through which Palladio's ideas were primarily transmitted, reinforce the themes of the book.

Summary:
At the heart of "Is a River Alive?" is a single, transformative idea: that rivers are not mere matter for human use, but living beings, who should be recognized as such in both imagination and law. Macfarlane takes the reader on a mind-expanding global journey into the history, futures, people and places of the ancient, urgent concept. Around the world, rivers are dying from pollution, drought and damming. But a powerful movement is also underway to recognize the lives and the rights of rivers, and to re-animate our relationships with these vast, mysterious presences whose landscapes we share. The young "rights of nature" movement has lit up activists, artists, law-makers and politicians across six continents—and become the focus for revolutionary thinking about rivers in particular.

Summary:
Published in connection of the centennial of the artist's birth, this book draws on Noguchi's letters, his reminescences, and interviews with his friends and colleagues to cast a new light on his youth, his creativity and his relationships. During his sixty-year career, there is hardly a genre that Noguchi failed to explore. He produced more than 2,500 works of sculpture, designed furniture, lamps and stage sets, crated dramatic public gardens all over the world; and pioneered the development of environmental art. This biography, first published in Japanese, traces Isamu Noguchi's lifelong journey across the artistic and cultural borders in search of his personal identity.

Summary:
French cultural theorist and urbanist Paul Virilio is best known for his writings on media, technology, and architecture. Gathered here in this publication are four conversations in which Virilio and architectural writer Marianne Brausch look at a twentieth century characterized by enormous technological acceleration and by technocultural accidents of barbarism and horror. The dialogues in "A Winter’s Journey" —structured loosely around the dates 1940, 1950, 1960, and 1980— chart Virilio’s intimate intellectual biography, from his childhood lived against the unstable backdrop of a heavily bombed, wartime Nantes to maturity in a crisis space that is neither entirely militarized nor yet fully civilian, but somewhere between the two. In the course of these conversations, Virilio and Brausch ultimately find hope that in understanding the events of the last century and the cultural responses spawned by them, we can create a more humane era that is more adept at handling the transformations of its technology and culture.

Summary:
This volume explores fifty buildings from around the world and the people who created them. Organized according to the idea that architecture is the result of basic human desires to live, work, pray, play, and stay, "50 great adventures" traces architecture back to the people who made it happen. Offering a global spectrum of architectural destinations, the book journeys from Lanzarote, Spain, home of César Manrique's Jameos del agua grotto, to India, the site of Nek Chand's rock garden of Chandigarh; and from Arizona, where Paolo Soleri's Arcosanti, a vision for a utopian community, shimmers in the desert, to China's Forbidden city. Travel advice accompanies each piece, giving readers all the information they need to experience these extraordinary places for themselves.
