Summary:
“And if I devoted my life to one of its feathers?” wrote the Chilean poet, artist, and feminist activist Cecilia Vicuña in the early 1970s. Vicuña countered anthropocentric and hetero-patriarchal urges with healing and appreciation, reviving the aesthetic and spiritual bonds between human and more-than-human entities and worlds. Revolving around this vision of interconnectivity, this book, which accompanies a joint exhibition of the same name of Kunsthalle Wien and Wiener Festwochen, seeks to create a collective dialogue around unequal distribution of power, sovereignty, and social and ecological justice. The exhibited works and written contributions reflect on the rationale of exploitation, the fast-paced mining of raw materials, and environmental destruction as a colonial legacy. They deconstruct Western anthropocentric models and enduring colonial and racist discourses, trace the stories of indigenous struggles for collective survival, and celebrate encounters defined by solidarity in their resistance to capitalist extraction, misogyny, imperialist violence, and dispossession.

Summary:
The French rust belt, the area that runs from Firminy through Saint-Etienne all the way to Lyon, was regarded for a long time as a thriving region. The industrial revolution in France began in the valleys between the Loire and Rhône rivers. This led to a process of exploitation and deformation of the landscape, signs of which are still visible today. For more than forty years, the region, like other former industrial sites, has suffered from unemployment and a population exodus. Looking at the long-term photographic study by Nicolas Giraud and Bertrand Stofleth, it is evident that this is now the reality wherever neoliberalism has cut its swathe through industrial communities. Once industry has retreated, the landscapes that are left behind all look fairly similar. In visual terms, there is no great difference between Saint-Etienne and Suhl in Thuringia, for example. In ''La Vallée'', Giraud and Stofleth’s photographs enter into a dialogue with texts by authors from a variety of disciplines.

Summary:
This book is built from images, drawings and texts. These three types of documents are exposed in an elemental way, alone in the center of each page and isolated from the project to which they belong. The authors organized the inventory from a set of documents that first claim their independence and then undergo a peer dialogue. These two actions may seem to cancel each other out, but they actually both reaffirm a very basic idea, which holds that the interest of a conversation is closely related to the consistency of its interlocutors. The conversation that arises from each diptych is precisely what stimulates the appearance of a tacit project. A project that bypasses material organizations and that is only possible due the intervention of an active reader, capable of establishing connections between the printed documents. This book is a twofold response to what are the disciplinary assets that the architecture studio Adamo-Faiden produces and how they should be organized to accurately delineate the authors’ interests.

Summary:
Part-to-part relationships and the approach to governing their sensibilities is at the root of all architecture. The need for engaging in a dialogue around these systems is essential to contemporary architectural discourse and practice. ''Assembly'' builds on and extends the investigations of materials and representation techniques in the editors’ previous books, ''Matter and Lineament''. This book uses a collection of detailed case studies, explained by first-person authors, about experimental and innovative takes on assembling architecture. Bridging theory and practice, 17 projects and their principled approaches each demonstrate an important vein of inquiry within the topic. Essays probe issues such as latent and overt geometry, fabrication and technology, part-to-part elements, joinery and representation, material vernacular geometries, labor and place-based contextual assemblies, detailing, and pedagogical examinations. This text articulates the traditions and trends of material as the defining premise in the contemporary making of architecture. Its outcomes are applicable to beginning students of architecture and advanced practitioners alike.

Summary:
Lee Friedlander is one of the most important of the 1960s generation of photographers for whom the posture of disinterested objectivity served as a vehicle for passionate personal inquiries. His large body of work - he most often produces extended series of pictures on a chosen theme, then publishes them in book form - is broad in subject matter and supple and complex in style, and focuses on what he calls America's "social landscape". At the same time, he has pursued a playful dialogue with artistic tradition - as though open-eyed curiosity about the world and a sophisticated taste for the wiles of picture-making were one and the same thing. "Friedlander" takes a deep critical look at Friedlander's abundantly productive career. Including over 500 photographs grouped by series, and an incisive essay by Peter Galassi, Chief Curator of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art, this oversized publication is the most comprehensive review of the photographer's career to date.

Helle Juul and Flemming Frost have been busy contributing assignment solutions from dialogue-based consultancy to concrete planning, designing and realization of architecture. The signature of their work is the discussion about context and scale with respect to urban time and space. Juul & Frost manifest their professional conceptual foundation through a philosophical and theoretical approach to architecture. There is a focus on the architectonic idea, which is consistently pursued and tested throughout the entire course of the project. The origin of their work was established through the editorial responsibilities for the Danish journal of architecture, SKALA, and the running of an architectural gallery, also known as SKALA, at the end of the nineteen-eighties. In the nineteen-nineties, Juul & Frost continued working as curators of large scale urban exhibitions, symposia and workshops known as SKAZKI Architecture Forum.Comprehensively unified planning and the contextual angle stand as indispensable points of reference for Juul & Frost, regardless of the assignment's scale.

Summary:
L.A. Forum’s new publication gives an insider view into the real world of real estate development in Southern California. Using the structure of a screenplay to tell the story, architect Tom Marble takes the reader inside the minds of the people on both sides of the development conflict – those seeing land as a commodity for profit, and those who see it as a valued resource for all to enjoy. Having spent time negotiating on both sides of the conference table, Marble goes beyond the usual debates over New Urbanism vs. Sprawl vs. Whatever-The-Next-Thing-Is to share his unique perspective, shedding light on the goals and motivations of all parties embroiled in defining how we live in a post-urban, consumer-driven economy. A total of 32 color images accompany the text to further engage the reader in the pivotal dialogue regarding the success or failure of the master-planned community.

Summary:
In the twenty-first century, commerce and culture are ever more closely entwined. This new collection of essays by design critic Rick Poynor takes a searching look at visual culture to discover the reality beneath the ultra-seductive surfaces. Poynor explores the thinking behind the emerging resistance to commercial rhetoric among designers, and offers critical insights into the changing dialogue between advertising and design. Other essays address the topics of visual journalism; brands as religion; the new solipsism; graphic memes; the pleasures of imperfect design; and the poverty of “cool”. Around the world, many are now waking up to the dominance of huge corporations – invariably expressed by visual means. This pointed and provocative counterblast arrives at a moment when critical responses are vital if this mono-culture is to be challenged. It offers inspirational evidence of alternative ways of engaging with design, and it will appeal to any reader with a questioning interest in design, advertising, cultural studies, media studies, and the visual arts.

Summary:
''Concéntrico: Urban Innovation Laboratory'' reflects on the first decade of the international Concéntrico festival and the one hundred and fifty projects and designs commissioned for it. The festival’s aim is to serve as a laboratory searching for creative ways of using architecture and design to strengthen communities and to support the dialogue between designers and citizens. The book offers a unique meditation on the transformation of cities and the relevance of architecture and design in the twenty-first century. It introduces meaningful ways to address and engage with pressing urban issues—from identity and heritage to temporariness, collectivity, ecology, play, and domesticity—through the lens of selected Concéntrico commissions since 2015. Through lavishly illustrated essays, it features projects by eighty artists, architects, and designers from twenty countries. They are prefaced and held together by a conversation between the editors Javier Peña Ibáñez and Nick Axel, who speak about the festival’s context, evolution, and the knowledge it has produced since 2014.
