Description:
The project series documents Pettena's preliminary study and proposal for the restoration and conversion of the Forte Inglese, a Napoleonic era fortification in Portoferraio, Italy. Pettena worked on this project in 1992. The restauration and conversion project for the fort was not realized because of changes in the local government. The proposal consisted of converting the fort into an exhibition space, an auditorium and a public garden "by simply adding spaces that utilized volumes created underground or at the rear: thus the respect of the preexisting context was assured, from the viewpoint of history as well as landscape." [1] The project series contains a preliminary study report by Pettena, sketches, site plans, floor plans, elevations, and sections for Pettena's proposal, reference photographs, research material, such as photocopies of publications on the fort and reference plans for the historic building. Description:
The project series documents "Achipensierio" a series of installations designed by Pettena from 2001 to 2018. The installation consists of variations of a building frame either made of metal beams or trellis covered in plants or straw. The building frame is designed to change form and appears deconstructed depending on the point of view. "Described by Gianni Pettena as “a contemporary Stonehenge,” but also as “a lesson in spatial perception,” this work metaphorically reaffirms the idea that there are no longer any frontiers today, when one is referring to themes relating to physical space, between the sensibility of the architect and that of the environmental artist." [1] The "Archipensierio" installations were presented in various venues from 2001 to 2018, including: "Archipensierio 2" at the Manifesta 7 in Rovereto, in 2008; "Archipensierio 5" at the Court Carrée du Louvre, in Parigi, for FIAC 2009; and "Archipensierio 6" at the UMOCA, in Salt Lake City, in 2013. The project series contains sketches, elevations, plans, drawings and photographs of the installations. It also includes a small model for the Archipensierio I, 2001 installation. Description:
The project series documents "Tappeto “Sprofondo”", a rug design by Pettena and produced by the Galleria Speciale in Bari, in 1989, for the "I tappeti della meditazione" project that aimed to "underline the importance of an object that [...] can stimulate other uses and behaviors apart from its simple decorative function." [1] Pettena designed a rug with a pattern creating a sinking illusion, to put emphasis on the feeling of dizziness and imbalance that could come with meditation, rather than serenity and contemplation. The project series contains various design studies for the pattern of the "Sprofondo" rug, a transparency of the final design, and photographs and a video of the rug. Description:
The project series documents the digitally created performance "Antologico… Enciclopedico" by Pettena in 2012. The project consists of a photograph of bookshelves which was digitally modified to include an image of Pettena to give the illusion that he is laying amongst the books. "An ironical statement made by the artist who, being more than seventy years old, has by now been the object of a long and progressive phenomenology of quotations and inspirations of critics, architects and contemporary artists. This is usually what happens with masters who, more or less, are no longer acting on the stage." [1] The project series contains two sketches and photographs of the performance. Description:
The project series documents the "Tavolo Sprofondo" a table designed by Pettena, possibly in 1980-1981, and produced in 2010. The table is shaped like an hourglass and the top gives the illusion of sinking in. Inventories, received from the donor, list the dates for this project as 1980-1981. However, Gianni Pettena's website identifies the date of the project as 2010. During the arrangement of the project records, the dates from the inventory were chosen as project dates. The project series contains plans, elevations and details of the table.

Description:
The project series documents the performance "La Mia Idea Di Architettura" held at Base, Spazio per l'arte in Florence, in 2014. The performance consists of a lecture given by Pettena, standing in a window frame, speaking to people passing in the street. "To illustrate his idea of architecture, Pettena chose to address not only experts in the field but also a random audience, passers-by on the street as he spoke." [1] The lecture was held in the context of an exhibition on Radical Tools, the Florentine group of the ‘radical’ movement architects and artists. Each protagonist of the group were invited to present a lecture. The project series contains photographs of the performance. The project series documents the performance "Io Sono La Spia". It consists of a group of photographs of the founders of Global Tools taken in 1973, in Milan, in which Pettena identifies himself as "the spy" by holding a sign that reads "Io Sono La Spia" [I am the Spy]. Global Tools, was a multidisciplinary program of workshops used to promote different tools and materials in architecture and represented the peak in the radical movement in Italy. By identifying himself as "the spy", Pettena "claimed to be a betraying architect and he stated his own 'diversity' by calling into question his identified role as a 'radical architect'." [1] The project series contains the sign with the words "Io Sono La Spia" and photographs of the Global Tools team, including a photograph showing Pettena holding the sign "Io Sono La Spia".
