Summary:

In the south of Iceland is Landbrot, a place closer to fairy tales than to science-- indeed, a place easy to imagine as the singular source of fairies and elves worldwide. It is easy, too, to imagine the sensual comfort and satisfaction to be found there. "Mother, wonder" is the eleventh book in Roni Horn’s (born 1955) ongoing series "To Place," which she initiated in 1989 and exists only in book form. All the volumes focus on Iceland and the evolving experiences of the artist there; together they form a flowing dialogue addressing the relationship between identity and place. The titles to date in the coveted "To Place" encyclopedia are "Bluff Life" (1990), "Folds" (1991), "Lava" (1992), "Pooling Waters" (1994), "Verne’s Journey" (1995), "Haraldsdóttir" (1996), "Arctic Circles" (1998), "Becoming a Landscape" (2001), "Doubt Box" (2006) and "Haraldsdóttir, Part Two" (2011).

Summary:
In ''Camera Geologica'' Siobhan Angus tells the history of photography through the minerals upon which the medium depends. Challenging the emphasis on immateriality in discourses on photography, Angus focuses on the inextricable links between image-making and resource extraction, revealing how the mining of bitumen, silver, platinum, iron, uranium, and rare earth elements is a precondition of photography. Photography, Angus contends, begins underground and, in photographs of mines and mining, frequently returns there. Through a materials-driven analysis of visual culture, she illustrates histories of colonization, labor, and environmental degradation to expose the ways in which photography is enmeshed within and enables global extractive capitalism. Angus places nineteenth-century photography in dialogue with digital photography and its own entangled economies of extraction, demonstrating the importance of understanding photography’s complicity in the economic, geopolitical, and social systems that order the world.

"Color me softly" brings together photographs by Kathleen McIntyre, whose ingenious arrangement using a color scale is revealed when looking at the Japanese-bound, closed book from the side. An expanded version of a diptych, the juxtaposition of images creates a dialogue and space between the images that opens and allows for personal interpretation. "I wish with this book to give room for contemplation and imagination." Originally from California, Kathleen McIntyre moved to Norway at an early age. The cultural transition and need to adapt to a new language led her to develop a close relationship with her camera, becoming more of an observer than a talker. "For me, seeing is a deliberate choice searching for what is not obviously present. All layers come together in my viewfinder and what you see is what I saw."

RMIT's relationship with Tokyo Institute of Technology began in 1994 with a joint research project in the City of Ogaki in Gifu Prefecture. That project was part of RMIT School of Architecture's continuing commitment to an engagement with the urbanism of its region. "By-Product-Tokyo" is the outcome of a new chapter in this dialogue with TITech. The project was instigated by Shane Murray in 1999 with the receipt of a grant to fund student exchange from the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific Association. Nigel Bertram and Marika Neustupny developed the three-month project in Tokyo. This book is itself a by-product of Tokyo, and its contemporary thought. It is an unexpected offshoot of an ongoing line of architectural research being undertaken by a group of Japanese architects and students centred at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

The former missile station in the Hombroich cultural area is the site for another outstanding architectural project that blends harmoniously with its environment. Tadao Ando sees this as an experience that uses a combination of simple building materials, glass and concrete, to create a dialogue between building and nature. Viktor and Marianne Langen’s life work forms the basis for this new art house, which Japanese architect Tadao Ando was contracted to design. It will be completed in the spring of 2004. The first exhibition will be dedicated to a selection of the Langen collection of modern and Japanese art. The Langen Foundation aims in future to stimulate unusual meetings between art and its surrounding architecture. Tadao Ando’s architecture, a built space as an independent sculpture, and the presentation of the art inside it create the possibility of interactive experiences.

Summary:
In paintings, murals, and book illustrations, Aaron Douglas (1899–1979) produced the most powerful visual legacy of the Harlem Renaissance, prompting the philosopher and writer Alain Locke to dub him the “father of Black American art.” Presenting more than ninety illustrations of Douglas’s works and the commentary of leading critics and historians, this book focuses on the artist’s career from the 1920s through the 1940s in relation to American modernism. Its authors argue that Douglas’s bold work opened doors for African American artists in Harlem and beyond, and that it invited a dialogue with modernism that put African American life, labor, and freedom, along with African traditions and motifs, at its center. New information emerges from these pages, reflecting the rich interchange between the visual arts, music, dance, literature, and politics that shaped Douglas’s work and also defined the Harlem Renaissance.
