Summary:

Summary:
Much has been written about Renaissance architect Leon Battista Alberti’s mantra of part-to-whole as one of the continuing conditions of architecture. While this underlying thesis has often been repeated in the annals of architectural history and theory, architects have rarely questioned the idea. In ''Rewriting Alberti'', architect Peter Eisenman suggests, however, that Alberti provoked a radical discourse beyond the part-to-whole dialogue featured in his Ten Books of Architecture. Eisenman’s in-depth analysis of Alberti’s five built works reveals a disjunction between the architect’s buildings and theoretical writings, suggesting a new relationship of form to meaning based on the fragmentation of homogeneous space. ''Rewriting Alberti'' includes contributions by Pier Vittorio Aureli, Mario Carpo, and Daniel Sherer. Carpo, an architectural historian and critic, theorizes that Alberti’s work initiated an idea of the discipline as a notational system akin to contemporary computational logics. By way of comparison, Sherer, an architectural historian, reconsiders critic Manfredo Tafuri’s readings of Alberti, and architect and theorist Aureli draws on Alberti to propose another idea of the architectural “project.”

Summary:
Thousands of newcomers are pouring into Alberta from around the globe, bringing unexpected gifts. Many are writers and storytellers. What pulls them to Canada? What happens to them on the journey? What experiences have they deliberately left behind? What treasures do they bring? How do they describe their emerging sense of place and their creative aspirations in a new home? In this moving collection of stories and poems, writers from around the world share their thoughts on creating a life in Alberta. Expressed with beauty and clarity, and sometimes translated from the writer's native tongue, these very personal accounts of joy and sadness, regret and humour, homesickness and exuberance, describe the defining moments of a departure and an arrival. Linda Goyette is an Edmonton writer and journalist with an interest in giving voice to a new Canadian dialogue. Her previous books include Rocky Mountain Kids, Kidmonton: True Stories of River City Kids; Edmonton in Our Own Words, which won the Grant MacEwan Authors Award in 2005; Standing Together: Women Speak Out About Violence and Abuse and Second Opinion.

Summary:
At the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris, the newly erected Eiffel Tower became one of the first icons of illuminated architecture, a nocturnal "lighthouse." It was not until decades later, in the 1920s, when a building’s evening façade became a central issue for residential and commercial architects, who began to look for avant-garde and aesthetically striking ways to light up their ever-taller works in all the major cities of the world. Both European and American architects wanted to distance their buildings from the garish electric signage that had come to dominate the street-level cityscape, so they worked with more delicately colored floodlights. Contemporary architects use many of the same techniques today, aided by technological advances that allow them to be implemented in particularly dramatic ways. "Luminous Buildings: Architecture of the NIght" opens a dialogue on the often overlooked but exciting connections between architecture, technology and light, offering points of reference in historical buildings and utopias, more recent designs, paintings and photographs of nighttime facades, and scholarly texts.

Summary:

Summary:
Michael Wolf achieved fame when he won the 2005 World Press Photo with his China, Factory of the World project, and the 2010 World Press Photo with Tokyo Compression. The present book offers his personal take on the French capital. Singling out typical architectural features of the Parisian landscape he renders the seemingly banal immortal. Roofs, chimneys, and lights provide the pictures with rhythm, with their colors, shapes, and above all their volumes. Wolf invites the reader to enter his highly distinctive visual world and let his gaze follow the snaking lines of walls and gutters, dwelling on unexpected details lovingly picked out. The photographer's underlying desire is to encourage us to consider the environmental and architectural context that provides a framework for all these rigorously rectangular features. This dreamlike journey into a Paris viewed from the rooftops is underlined in the second part of the book. The shadows of trees decorate the façades of various buildings, creating a visual poetry and prompting an intimate dialogue where, in the absence of all human presence, nature and architecture blend into one another.

Summary:
New spatial notational systems for protecting and regaining Indigenous lands in the United States. Nina Valerie Kolowratnik challenges the conditions under which Indigenous rights to protect and regain traditional lands are currently negotiated in United States legal frameworks. This tenth volume in the Critical Spatial Practice series responds to the urgent need for alternative modes of evidentiary production by introducing an innovative system of architectural drawing and notation. Kolowratnik focuses on the double bind in which Native Pueblo communities in the United States find themselves when they become involved in a legal effort to reclaim and protect ancestral lands; the process of producing evidence runs counter to their structural organization around oral history and cultural secrecy. The spatial notational systems developed by Kolowratnik with Hemish tribal members from northern New Mexico and presented in this volume are an attempt to produce evidentiary documentation that speaks Native truths while respecting demands on secrecy. These systems also attempt to instigate a dialogue where there currently is none, working to deconstruct the fixed opposition between secrecy and disclosure within Western legal systems.

Summary:
This volume, which accompanies the great retrospective exhibition devoted to Enzo Mari and curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist (Milan Triennial, 17 October 2020 – 18 April 2021), celebrates the work and thought of Enzo Mari, one of the leading masters and theorists of Italian design. These are chiefly reconstructed through the constant dialogue he engaged in, over the years, with the curator Hans Ulrich Obrist. Plans, sketches, unpublished archive material, essays and interviews illustrate over 60 years of work, tracing for the first time a systematic and exhaustive itinerary – articulated into 19 ''research platforms'' – that conveys Mari’s sensitivity as a designer, artist, critic and theoretician, along with the striking relevance of his thought. According to Mari, design can only be regarded as such if it also transmits knowledge. His projects, which have withstood the test of time, have been conceived in such a way as to be sustainable – from a material as much as aesthetic perspective – and accessible to all. As Hans Ulrich Obrist recalls, ''For Enzo everything revolves around the object, and good design alone is destined to triumph''.
