Description:
This project series documents Pettena's installation entitled "Carabinieri". The installation consisted of sheets of corrugated cardboard and metal stays assembled to created the three-dimensional letters of the word "Carabinieri". The final product measured about ten meters long by two meters high. It was first built in the courtyard of the Palazzo Comunale in Novara in 1968. "The construction, left out in the open, gradually degraded due to the damp and rain" [1] which made it an installation project, as well as a performance. The installation was recreated for the exhibition "Gianni Pettena. About non conscious architecture" in the Galleria Giovanni Bonelli in Milan, in 2017. This project is the first of a series of three other similar projects. The project series contains photographs of the construction of the word "Carabinieri", photographs of the final installation at the Palazzo Comunale in Novara, and one photograph of the installation at the Gallerie Giovanni Bonelli. It also inlcudes drawings, a plan of the installation, and photographs of a later model of the cardboard word. Source: [1] Marco Scotini, editor. Non-conscious architecture: Gianni Pettena, Sternberg Press, 2018, 235 pages. p. 108.

Description:
The project series documents "Buon Compleanno", an installation that consists of a bed made up of a set of palanquins assembled together to "acquire significance only when assembled, when united according to an elementary scheme that could in theory be continued ad infinitum, creating a “place” of greater and greater intensity." [1] The installation was designed by Pettena at the invitation of the Galleria Special, in Bari, in 1985. The bed was produced by the gallery to present an interpretation of household furniture as ceremonial places. The project series contains sketches and photographs of the installation, a promotional card by the Galleria Special, and a gallery press release with a handwritten note by Pettena on the installation. Description:
This project series documents the "Babele" Tavolo, a table design by Pettena in 1967 and produced in 1968 by Gufram, an Italian seat and furniture manufacturer based in Barolo. "A sculpture that has become a stand for objects: it consists of a tree (with a marble base and metal trunk) whose leaf-shelves in lacquered wood can be placed in any position." [1] The table was designed in the context of designing furnishings for Pettena's studio-home in Florence. The project series contains a sketch showing different configurations of the table and its components, drawings, photographs and project descriptions in Italian and in English. Description:
The project series documents "La Mia Casa All'Elba", Pettena's house in Viticcio on the Island of Elba. The project, started in 1978, remained an ongoing project as the house has undergone many transformations over the years. The residence "is conditioned by its relationship with the physical context, the material and the working of space." [1] Pettena even reused some of the material already on site to build the residence. The house is comprised of different pavilions and spaces interconnected by small paths: "The house has progressively been defined as a sequence of spaces connected by routes, just like in a village. So it goes on growing almost like a primitive village, through intentions, successive organizations of spaces that define one another and are linked together." [2] The project series contains a sketch, plans, perspective drawings of the house and later additions. The project series is also comprised of photographs, including interior views showing artworks, photographs of Elba possibly used for research, and two videocassettes possibly with recordings of TV shows presenting the house. Description:
The project series documents the filmed performance "Architecture + Nature" produced by Pettena in 2011. The performance consists of the word "architecture" written in the sand slowly being erased by the movement of the waves. "The sea breaks slowly on the sandy beach... On it architecture stays. And the sea and its waves break with slow, constant, inexorable movements, like a bewitching, continual, eternal melody... And gradually architecture is dematerialized [...]." [1] The project series contains a video of the performance, a drawing, and six film stills. The object, formed of two halves that are assembled into the completeness of a whole, is in reality a disassembled and reassembled building, investigated in all its possible spatial values."
