Summary:
This book presents the many facets of Swiss photographer Balthasar Burkhard (1944–2010). Burkhard’s work combines a sensitive understanding of the body as sculpture and the photographic image as a canvas, making him one of the pioneers in translating photography as a monumental “tableau” into contemporary art. This comprehensive book coalesces Burkhard’s early role as a chronicler of the contemporary art of his time, especially as the main photographer for Swiss curator Harald Szeemann, his conceptual redefinition of photography together with other artists and finally his emancipation as a photo artist.

Summary:
"Future Cities Laboratory" reports on the same named research program and its mission to shape sustainable future cities through science, by design, in place. It offers a global perspective on cities from the vantage point of the world's most populous and rapidly urbanizing continent: Asia, which also acts as the base of the laboratory. This volume illustrates the richness and diversity of research at the Future Cities Laboratory (FCL). The book, which is the first in a planned series, describes new processes and types of data that are being used both to understand and improve cities. New approaches pioneered by FCL and its partners offer an important method to bridge the gap between knowledge production and action, with the aim of ensuring the sustainability of future cities. To reach this goal, FCL works closely with stakeholders in government, industry and society. The program has developed many simulation tools to help practitioners visualize the social, environmental or economic consequences of particular planning decisions.

This volume documents the House of the Narkomfin, built (or “montaged,” as the Constructivist architect Moisej J. Ginzburg (1986–1946) preferred to call it) between 1928 and 1931. It is therefore contemporaneous with Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye, as well as with Le Corbusier’s visit to Moscow. But the Narkomfin is more than a housing block with a recognizable style. It is(...)

It is therefore contemporaneous with Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye, as well as with Le Corbusier’s visit to Moscow. But the Narkomfin is more than a housing block with a recognizable style. It is the converging point of the history of Constructivism, where purposefully reassembled functional spaces were given an active role in transforming everyday social life.

Summary:
What is architectural form? What does architectural form mean? And why is it so significant today? Despite the historical signi?cance of form in architecture, the subject is frequently undervalued in debate. The publication The Form of Form examines a variety of ideas regarding form, not only through aesthetic and technological approaches, but also from social and political points of view. "The form of form" is the official publication of the same-named 4th Lisbon Architecture Triennale. The content of the book underlines the cultural and technical relevance of architecture within society. It aims to foster new thoughts as we reach the dawn of a rapidly changing society driven by fast access to information. After all the tensions and frictions that happen during the physical and social transformations of our cities and landscapes, when all the fuss is over and the different agents who contributed to change have left the field of play, what is left is a built form. Citizens live among forms; architectural forms have endured from the past and they will populate the future.
