Summary:
Larry Neal, a poet, dramatist, and critic, was a founding figure of the Black Arts Movement in the 1960s and 1970s in New York. Writing as the arts editor for Liberator magazine, a radical journal published in Harlem, Neal called for Black artists to produce work that was politically oriented, rooted in the Black experience, and written for the Black community. Engaging with fiction, music, drama, and poetry in his texts, he challenged the dominance of the Western art-historical canon and charged Black artists and writers with reshaping artistic traditions according to their own history. As he proclaimed in his essay "The Black Writer’s Role," written in 1966, "Black writers must listen to the world with their whole selves––their entire bodies. Must make literature move people. Must want to make our people feel, the way our music makes them feel."

Summary:
Bringing together some of the most prominent writers of science fiction and introducing fresh talent, this collection of stories, essays, and interviews explores global dystopias in apocalyptic landscapes and tech futures, in robot sentience and forever war. Global Dystopias engages the familiar horrors of George Orwell’s 1984 alongside new work by China Miéville, Tananarive Due, and Maria Dahvana Headley. In “Don’t Press Charges, and I Won’t Sue,” award-winning writer Charlie Jane Anders uses popularized stigmas toward transgender people to create a not-so-distant future in which conversion therapy is not only normalized, but funded by the government. Henry Farrell surveys the work of dystopian forebear Philip K. Dick and argues that distinctions between the present and the possible future aren’t always that clear. Contributors also include Margaret Atwood and award-winning speculative writer, Nalo Hopkinson.

Summary:
We now have the technology to reach nearby planets. Even though many long-term technical issues still need to be resolved to create the conditions for a permanent, self-sustaining human life on another planet, imagining humans as a multiplanetary species is no longer merely the stuff of science fiction. Against this backdrop, "Planetary Echoes" considers the place of this dream of human life on other planets in the arts, literature and sciences at the beginning of the 21st century. In this volume, a broad, interdisciplinary list of contributors (scientists, astronauts, designers, philanthropists, inventors, artists and curators) weighs in on the imaginable possibilities of space settlement. The list of contributors ranges from Buzz Aldrin to Richard Branson to Norman Foster, with many more perspectives on offer a list eclectic enough to match the eccentricity of the human dream of colonizing outer space.

Summary:
Like all of Robert Harbison's works, "Eccentric Spaces" is a hybrid, informed by the author's interests in art, architecture, fiction, poetry, landscape, geography, history, and philosophy. The subject is the human imagination and the mysterious interplay between the imagination and the spaces it has made for itself to live in: gardens, rooms, buildings, streets, museums and maps, fictional topographies, and architectures. The book is a lesson in seeing and sensing the manifold forms created by the mind for its own pleasure. Palaces and haunted houses, Victorian parlors, Renaissance sculpture gardens, factories, hill-towns, ruins, cities, even novels and paintings constructed around such environments: these are the spaces over which the author broods. Brilliantly learned, deliberately remote in form from conventional scholarship, "Eccentric Spaces" is a magical book, an intellectual adventure, a celebration. Originally published in 1977.

Summary:
"Out of Site" accompanies the eponymous exhibition featuring fictional architectural spaces and topographies that reflect how digital technology, virtual reality, urban and suburban growth, and global expansion have had an impact on contemporary culture. Advances in technology and communication have begun to blur the distinctions between what is real and virtual, interior and exterior, natural and artificial, local and global. The artists in "Out of Site" have responded to these developments by re-organizing and re-articulating space using a wide range of media. The "fictional" spaces in the work in "Out of Site" point to new ways of experiencing and navigating space, both physically in our homes, workplaces, and neighborhoods as well as on the Internet, and are informed by the history of utopian proposals, science fiction, and major shifts in architectural discourse and building in recent years.

Summary:
When we think of climate, the stories we tell about the future are often catastrophic: megastorms, crop failures, and heat waves loom over us, sending a signal that the problem is so vast, so complex, that it’s out of our control. That narrative is compelling for some, but leaves others feeling hopeless, helpless, and disillusioned. Even the most ardent champions of decarbonization sometimes focus more on sounding the alarm than on mapping out what success might look like. Without positive climate futures, visions of climate adaptation and resilience that we can work toward, it’s much harder to motivate broad-based efforts for change in the present. Through short speculative fiction, essays, and visual art, "Climate imagination" seeks to inspire a wave of narratives about what positive climate futures might look like for communities around the world.
