If we wish to understand architecture today, we must engage with the state of flux that defines it. In 2015, Inflection Volume 02 considers the idea of projection, interrogating its meaning in architecture and the built environment. Bringing together the work of students, academics and practitioners from Australia and around the world, this issue addresses the trajectories of the architectural design process, the changing role of architects in society, and the continuing state of becoming that defines our cities. Inflection is a student-run design journal based at the Melbourne School of Design, Melbourne University. During the 1970s, London-based photographers joined together to form collectives which engaged with local and international political protest in cities across the UK. This book is a survey of the radical community photography that these collectives produced. The photographers derived inspiration from counterculture while finding new ways to produce, publish and exhibit their work. They wanted to do things in their own way, to create their own magazines and exhibition networks, and to take their politicised photographic and textual commentary on the re-imagination of British cities in the post-war period into community centres, laundrettes, Working Men’s Clubs, polytechnics, nurseries – anywhere that would have them. This book reveals how they created a ‘history from below’, positioning themselves outside of established mainstream media, and aiming to make the invisible visible by bringing the disenfranchised and marginalised into the political debate.

The Robin Hood Gardens public-housing estate in East London, completed in 1972, was designed by Alison and Peter Smithson as an ethical and aesthetic encounter with the flux and crises of the social world. Now demolished by the forces of speculative development, this Brutalist estate has been the subject of much dispute. But the clichéd terms of debate—a "concrete monstrosity" or a "modernist masterpiece"—have marginalized the estate's residents and obscured its architectural originality. Recovering the social in the architectural, this book centers the estate's lived experience of a multiracial working class, not to displace the architecture's sensory qualities of matter and form, but to radicalize them for our present. Immersed in the materials, atmospheres, social forms and afterlives of this experimental estate, Robin Hood Gardens is reconstructed here as a socio-architectural expression of our times out of joint.
