Description:
This project series documents the design and construction of the Eaton’s store building at Dundas Square in Toronto from 1973-1977. The office identified the project number as 7303. This project, commissioned by The T. Eaton Co. Limited, consisted of a one million square foot department store with thirteen floors, ten above ground and three below. The building boasted nine floor of retail space, seamlessly connected through elevators and escalators. The remaining floors hosted office and storage spaces. Located at the corner of Yonge and Dundas streets, the Eaton’s store was connected to the Eaton Centre mall to its south. The mall, designed and built simultaneously with the Eaton’s store, was designed by the architecture firm Craig Zeidler Strong. For the Eaton’s store project, Parkin Architects Planners created a joint venture with architect C. Blakeway Millar, referred to as Parkin Millar in the documentation. Parkin Millar was the associate architects on this project, with the Eaton’s company architect, E.L. Hankinson, working as the primary architect. Each of the firms mentioned worked closely together to develop a cohesive design for the Eaton’s store and Eaton’s Centre mall, which is evident in the materials. The project is recorded through drawings, textual records, a book and presentation boards dating from 1973-1977. There are a large number of original drawings and sketches for the project. Most of the reprographic copies are arranged within the textual materials. There are presentation boards of the Vancouver Eaton's store in this project series that were likely used as reference by the architects. The textual records consist of correspondence, meeting minutes, site reports, change orders, consultancy records, inter-office letters, and specifications. Also in this project series is a special edition of the Eaton News, a monograph with in depth descriptions of the project.

The Minaki Lodge, owned by the Government of Ontario at the time of this project, was located on the banks of the Winnipeg River and was originally built in 1914 by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. The site included an X-shaped main lodge, a motor lodge and power house, a ski chalet and Holst Point on a nearby island. This project, which was phase I of the work, consisted of renovations to the main lodge including a complete reimagining of the interior layouts and the addition of a new convention hall and approximately 200 new guest rooms. This project mainly consisted of work on the interior layouts, while work for the additions continued under a new project number assigned by the office (see project series AP018.S1.1974.PR18 in this fonds). Drawings in this project series include drawings of the building before this project, at several points in its history. Originals and reprographic copies from 1945 were prepared by architect John Schofield for the Canadian National Railways. Reprographic copies of drawings dating from 1925-1930 were prepared by the Canadian National Railways. Reprographic copies from 1972 were prepared by architect Jack M. Ross. The project is recorded through drawings, photographs and textual records dating primarily from 1974-1977. There are originals of drawings from 1925-1926 prepared by the Canadian National Railways for a different project. The photographs show the building before this project commenced. The project series documents Block 121, better known as Bonjour Tristesse. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 2/80. This project was one of several projects Siza submitted to the International Architectural Exhibition Berlin competition (International Bauaustellung, IBA, circa 1979-1987), and was Siza’s first international built project. The IBA was an urban renewal strategy for West Berlin and received submissions from several international architects. The IBA divided West Berlin into two parts: IBA Neubau ('new building'), led by Josef Paul Kleihues and IBA Altbau ('old building') led by Hardt-Walherr Hämer. IBA Nuebau's focus was to build new buildings while IBA Altbau's was to renovate existing buildings. The project site for Block 121 was in the district of Kreuzberg, a district on the eastern side of then West Berlin. Due to low rents, there was an influx of immigrants and students to Kreuzberg in the late 1970s. Bonjour Tristesse would serve as a residential complex for a predominantly Turkish immigrant population. In 1980, Hämer invited Siza to submit an entry for this complex to be built on the east side of Kreuzberg beside the Schlesisches Tor train station. Hämer encouraged the participatory model which Siza had become known for from his work with the Servicio Ambulatorio de Apoio Local (SAAL) in Portugal. This project series is arranged in four subseries: AP178.S1.1980.PR02.SS1, Competition, Block 121 (identified as 2/80); AP178.S1.1980.PR02.SS2, Bonjour Tristesse (identified as 2/80 A); AP178.S1.1980.PR02.SS3, Kita [Kindergarten] (identified as 2/80 B); and AP178.S1.1980.PR02.SS4, Senior Club Anziani [Senior citizens’ clubhouse] (identified as 2/80 C). These documents are records of Goldsmith's early influences, and his education and training as an architect at the Armour Institute (later the Illinois Institute of Technology) and at the University of Rome. The papers also concern his service as an structural engineer in the U.S. armed forces, work in the office of Mies van der Rohe, and travels in Europe in the early 1950's all of which could be also considered as part of his education. The documents in this series are interesting for the quantity of Goldsmith's student sketches and research notes, including lectures by and observations on Mies van der Rohe and Pier Luigi Nervi. Moreover, correspondence, notes and photographs reveal a variety of other important influences on the young Goldsmith, such as a pilgrimage to visit Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesan East, and letters to Buckminister Fuller. Of particular interest are the papers concerning Mies van der Rohe as teacher, mentor and friend to Goldsmith. The fonds contains various documents from office files, including Goldsmith's notations on projects like the Farnsworth House, and collections of period photographs and blueprints of Mies' buildings and furniture designs. Related documentation on Mies exists in various files throughout the fonds, especially in the Mies van der Rohe Centennial Project located in Series 3: Professional Activities - Teaching. The last section in this series, Papers and Correspondence, which consists of personal and business papers dating from the late 1950's to the mid-1990's. This material includes the Goldsmith-Ferris Portfolio, a collection of 150 mounted photographs (possibly for an exhibition) that presents mostly Goldsmith's collaborative work with architect James Ferris, from the experimental projects in reinforced concrete in Rome to the Kitt Peak Solar Telescope of 1962. The sketchbooks document Siza’s creative process and demonstrate his unique method to comprehend an architectural project. Siza mentions that in the early stages of a project he immediately begins to draw, regardless of if he has knowledge of all the details and problems. The sketchbooks document the evolution of Siza's projects and also serve as a type of log. Not only does each sketchbook contain various sketches and notes for projects Siza was working on but also schedules, contacts, and drafts of letters. Among the sketches for projects are also general sketches of his travels, people, animals, objects, furniture, and at times landscapes. Most sketchbooks primarily contain sketches for projects with intermingled sketches of people or faces, however there are a number of sketchbooks that mostly contain sketches of people. The Siza fonds is being processed in four phases. Up to date the sketchbooks that have been processed are ones that relate to architectural projects that were processed in the first and second phase of processing. This project series documents the design and construction of the Hôtel de la Délégation in Algiers, Algeria from 1982-1985. The office identified the project number as 8220. This hotel was designed with inspiration from traditional Maghrebian and Middle Eastern architecture but made in the modern style. The site for the project consisted of the hotel, a neighbouring villa, a separate office complex, a roundabout at the entrance, two pools, tennis courts, gardens and, an arcade. The project proposed several variations on the design for the hotel, including an eight-level option and a ten-level option, the latter adding two levels of parking to the bottom of the building. The hotel was built into a hill so floors that were subterranean on one side of the building were above ground on the other. This latter side had terraced pergolas at every level with views over the pool. The hotel had a multi-level atrium that contained elaborate indoor gardens and trees. While the ground floor was made up of conference rooms, banquet halls and the reception area, the other levels mostly contained hotel rooms. This project was commissioned by Lavalin International Inc. for the Algerian government, who are referred to in the records as the Présidence de la République, République Algérienne, Démocratique et Populaire. The project is also referred to as Hôtel Alger in the project documentation. The project is recorded through drawings, photographic materials and textual records dating from 1982-1985. Almost all of the records are in French, with the exception of a few interoffice communications. While there are construction drawings in the project materials, there are also a large number of design drawings showing different schemes and ideas for the hotel.
