Project
AP056.S1.1989.PR02
Description:
This project series documents interior design for Main Street of Hasbro Headquarters in Pawtucket, Rhode Island from 1989-1991. The office identified the project number as 8902. This project consisted of the interiors of the company's headquarters for an area of the building known as Main Street. This was the first in a series of projects that the firm would complete for the headquarters. The 300,000 square foot building was predominantly one-storey and located on the block between Saratoga, Grand, London and Newport Avenues. The three projects were known as Main Street, Phase 2A and Phase 2B. Phase 1 was completed in 1986 by Barton Myers Associates with Shirley Blumberg as partner-in-charge. These subsequent projects by KPMB were also headed by Shirley Blumberg and continued the initial style she had established in Phase 1. These projects saw the conversion of a historic brick and masonry mill into the company's new offices. The office structure was inspired by the layout of a Greek town, with a main street running through it. Main Street was a wide corridor which spanned the length of the building, acting as a central artery for activity. The corridor was flooded with natural light from the original saw tooth skylights on the ceiling and lantern-like offices lined the sides. Small rooms were positioned in the corridor, including the main conference room with a large curved wall, a reception area and two smaller conference rooms. Maple screens, translucent glass and steel were the prominent materials used for Main Street. The project is recorded through drawings dating from 1987-1988. These are mostly original drawings and include sketches, plans, sections, elevations, perspectives, details, and furniture drawings. Many of the plans focus on the design of the executive bathroom.

Potteries Thinkbelt
AP144.S2.D56
Description:
File documents the unexecuted project, Potteries Thinkbelt, conceived for North Staffordshire, England, United Kingdom. The proposal called for a network of educational facilities for 20,000 students to be located over a 100 square mile area northwest of London. Moveable components, including fold-out lecture/demonstration units, rail-based teaching units, self-teach carrel units, faculty units, and housing units, were to be dispersed along the rail system. Existing conditions materials include regional aerial photographs with overlays of the rail system, and photographs, photo collages and panoramas of the region. Schematic sketches and drawings show the development of Price's design. Regional plans examine links between new and existing rail systems and national transportation networks and their projected use. Diagrammatic plans illustrate the relationships between recommended functions/activities attributed to specific areas. Detailed plans, sections, elevations, and axonometric drawings show housing types (sprawl, capsule, and crate), faculty and transfer areas in Madeley, Pitts Hill, and Meir. Other materials include regional land-use plans, photomontages with drawn perspectives, thumbnail sketches, life-span charts, conceptual sketches, aerial photographs and reprographic copies, some rendered and annotated. Many of the drawings were published in Price, Cedric. "PTB, Potteries Thinkbelt: A Plan for an Advanced Educational Industry in North Staffordshire." 'Architectural Design'. (October, 1966), 483-497; in Price, Cedric and Paul Barker, "The Potteries Thinkbelt", 'New Society' (June 1966) 14-17; and in Price, Cedric "Potteries Thinkbelt: Project for an Education Industry", 'Bauen & Wohnen', no. 9 (1967) 351-360. Material in this file was created between 1939 and 1987 but predominantly between 1963 and 1967. File contains conceptual drawings, design development drawings, presentation drawings, publication drawings, reference drawings, photographic material, and textual records.

Detroit Think Grid
AP144.S2.D73
Description:
File documents Detroit Think Grid, an unrealized project for a series of experiments which were to be developed by Price in collaboration with various groups in the Greater Detroit and Oakland area and implemented over a five-year period. Collaborators were to include the municipality, industry, commerce, and the existing education network, particularly Oakland County Community College in Detroit, Michigan. The principle aim of the Detroit Think Grid was to make the education "system" flexible and responsive to the needs of the community and readily accessible to everyone. Detroit Think Grid components include mobile units such as swimming pools, public learning booths and packaged workshops. Material in this group consists of existing conditions documentation concerning Oakland County and Oakland Community College campuses, such as aerial photographs of streets, zoning maps and maps of various townships, maps of traffic flow in Oakland County, and site plans of Oakland Community College campuses. Design development drawings include zoning plans showing present and projected uses of various zones, major transportation modes, patterns, and access points, and predictions for general population, school population, and retail growth within Oakland County. Material from this file was published in "Cedric Price Supplement No. 3", 'Architectural Design', vol. 41, (June 1971), 353-363 and 'Cedric Price-Works II' (London: Architectural Press, 1984), 54, 66. Material in this file was produced between 1957 and 1975, but predominantly between 1969 and 1971. Cedric Price presented a conference at the Cranbrook Institute of Science, in Michigan in 1968 and produced 2 reports for them titled 'Oakland Community College: An Investigation into Educational Servicing' (1968) and 'Oakland Community College: An Investigation into New Forms of Learning' (1968). File contains cartographic materials, design development drawings, photographic materials, reference drawings, and textual records.
