Summary:

Digital currencies (cryptocurrencies) and digital property require large amounts of land, resources, and data centers and infrastructures to store these ''supplies''. There is a larger architectural and urban infrastructural challenge and urgency on how these various kinds of digital exchanges are mediated, to limit the detrimental use of our everyday resources. Using a mixed-media approach, this book couples a novel exploration of XR (mixed-reality) and AR (augmented reality) into several parts of the book. To prolong the shelf-life of emergent data and case-studies on the topic, the book is complemented with an open-access digital platform for readers to access video interviews with the industry experts, diagrammatic mapping and graphical cartography, and 3D artifacts that shows how data interacts with phygital properties.

Summary:
Across a vast span of human history, in our expanding and evolving capacities for both construction and reverence, there has been an interplay between biomorphic and geometric form related to situating ourselves on a cosmic spectrum. Sotirios Kotoulas is an architect immersed in the possibility of these forms, and the materials that render them. In his practice, symbolic shapes, materials, and colors can channel energy, and electromagnetic forces can be tuned and transmitted. In turn, these dynamisms can be mapped, be traced, and become form generators on their own. Sotirios approaches these concerns from multiple angles simultaneously, from conceptual exploration to the assembly of viable structures. As an Artist-in-residence at Dartmouth, he's delved deeper into two projects on this spectrum.

HISTAORMINA presents new concepts of architectural education and urban design through the lens of an intensive two-week workshop held in September of 2001. With the unique coastal hilltown of Taormina, Sicily as both subject and setting, the authors led a team of European and American students in an exploration that combined visual and conceptual design, historical references, critical discourse, and both local and global issues with innovative new methods of individual creativity and collaboration. The results are documented in an extensive series of photographs of experimental models and constructions and the working processes that produced them. These are accompanied by comments from the students and a text by the authors explaining the concepts behind this new approach and describing its implications for the future.

Summary:
A historical and philosophical exploration of the impact of design on underserved communities, examining the field’s shortcomings as well as its potential to create positive change. Through essays that delve into history and practice, and case studies that demonstrate practical strategies, "Design against racism" explores how designers of all disciplines can address, through their work, the legacies of racism and oppression. Design profoundly influences culture. The heart of this book is its powerful blend of essays on design history, illustrated case studies, and discussions of practical methods to approach design work, adapted from the restorative justice movement. It explores how design as a professional practice and academic discipline directly affects historically excluded communities, offering frameworks and examples that foster collective improvement.

Summary:
This multi-disciplinary analysis looks ahead to the direction which the study of urban society is likely to take during the twenty-first century. Leading researchers from sociology, geography, anthropology and cultural studies examine the research issues which emerged during the 1990s, particularly from political economy and cultural turn perspectives. Their exploration reveals both how urban studies has fragmented, and how a new middle ground for future debate and research has arisen. The volume brings together theoretical discussion of urban studies with analyses of urban processes at both regional and local levels around the globe. It enables readers to assess the degree to which differing perspectives have produced dynamic diversity as well as areas of mutual interest, creating exciting possibilities for urban studies locally and globally.

We might spend a little less time on earth, but humans are also weathering: evolving and changing as we're transformed by the shifting climates of our lives and experiences. So, what might these ancient natural forms have to teach us about resilience and change? In a stunning exploration of our own connection to these enduring forms, outdoor psychotherapist and geologist Ruth Allen takes us on a journey through deep time and ancient landscapes, showing how geology - which has formed the bedrock of her own adult life and approach to therapy - can offer us a new way of thinking about our own grief, change and boundaries.

Summary:
The devastation of the Second World War gave rise to imaginations both utopian and apocalyptic. In Japan, a fascinating confluence of architects and science fiction writers took advantage of this space to begin remaking urban design. In 'The Metabolist Imagination', William O. Gardner explores the unique Metabolism movement, which allied with science fiction authors to foresee the global cities that would emerge in the postwar era. This first comparative study of postwar Japanese architecture and science fiction builds on the resurgence of interest in Metabolist architecture while establishing new directions for exploration. Gardner focuses on how these innovators created unique versions of shared concepts—including futurity, megastructures, capsules, and cybercities—making lasting contributions that resonate with contemporary conversations around cyberpunk, climate change, anime, and more.

Summary:
Digital technologies have changed the world, transforming how, where, and when we communicate, love, learn, produce, distribute, and consume. "Digital lives in the global city" examines those changes in the context of urban life, investigating how urban land, governance, and the economy are being remade by advancing communication technologies. Interspersing critical scholarship with provocative short works from non-tradtional authors to engage with a wide range of issues wrought by digital infrastructure, the book addresses such topics as struggles over unsafe and illegal buildings in Mumbai, the conditions of migrant work in Singapore, the question of digital debt in Toronto, and targeted policing in New York. This nuanced exploration reveals the profound connections between digital technologies and the social life of global cities.
