Summary:
''Tar Sands'' critically examines the frenzied development in the Canadian tar sands and the far-reaching implications for all of North America. Bitumen, the sticky stuff that ancients used to glue the Tower of Babel together, is the world’s most expensive hydrocarbon. This difficult-to-find resource has made Canada the number-one supplier of oil to the United States, and every major oil company now owns a lease in the Alberta tar sands. The region has become a global Deadwood, complete with rapturous engineers, cut-throat cocaine dealers, Muslim extremists, and a huge population of homeless individuals. In this award-winning book, a Canadian bestseller, journalist Andrew Nikiforuk exposes the disastrous environmental, social, and political costs of the tar sands, arguing forcefully for change.

Not only is this book a collection of an award-winning design, these postcards also connect you to other villagers.

Summary:
Born out of the Portuguese revolution of 1974, the Serviço Ambulatório de Apoio Local (SAAL) was one of the most compelling processes in 20th-century architecture. A pioneering experiment in Europe, it set up technical teams led by architects who, in collaboration with the local population, tried to address the urgent housing needs of communities across the nation. The teams were reinventing architectural practice, from surveying living conditions to monitoring land expropriation, designing projects with the residents directly. This volume includes new essays along with historic texts, an interview with some of the major figures involved, and extensive project documentation. An exhibition by the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves, The SAAL Process will be presented at the CCA in Spring 2015.

Summary:
"Caracas litoral, Venezuela" looks at the challenges, obstacles, and opportunities facing the reconstruction of coastal communities near Caracas, after mudslides devastated these areas in December 1999. Already in the midst of informal land development, affluent weekend residents from Caracas had awkwardly occupied this dramatic and precarious strip of coastland between the Gulf of Mexico and the Avila Mountain - also shared with the national airport and second largest seaport. In a city where most of the urban population lives in informal housing, the contested nature of redevelopment - emergent social, economic, and cultural patterns confronting traditional patterns of settlement - could easily be predicted. Fully bilingual, in English and Spanish, this book explores opportunities that unite the various constituencies through innovative programming, sustainable geological/hydrological infrastructure, and economically viable housing and commercial development.

Summary:
This reader takes the following assumption as its basis: the ceaseless expansion of the urban periphery has been detrimental to not only urban populations but also the planet at large, corroding its most valuable and scarce resource, land. ''Housing'' proffers redensification as the corrective measure to the failing expansionist approach toward urban planning. Gathered here are case studies of alternative social housing projects from the past century—all of which incorporate methods of redensification. They span the Weißenhofsiedlung Estate (1927) to architectural experiments in suburban Mexico as recent as 2017. These alternative developments have offered solutions to countries experiencing intense population growth and provided sanctuary for those who have lost their homes in natural disasters. Altogether, the projects evince that the problem of urban housing is inextricably bound with the inception and progression of modernism.

Summary:

Summary:
From Great Britain, Belgium, Finland, and Italy to Russia, Kazakhstan, and China, cities are shrinking everywhere. While urban-planning debates of recent years have mainly focused on the growth of the megalopolis, in other places zones of shrinkage were actually developing. Enormous population losses and high unemployment contribute to this process, which is further accelerated by globalization and the transition to post-Socialism. This book examines the causes and dynamics of the shrinking process for the first time on an international level. Citing concrete examples from Manchester and Liverpool in Great Britain, Detroit in the United States, Ivanovo in Russia, and Halle and Leipzig in Germany, it compares living conditions and cultural change in shrinking urban regions. Artistic intercessions help sensitize the public to a global phenomenon which poses a completely new social challenge.

Summary:
London’s modest eighteenth-century houses - those inhabited by artisans and laborers in the unseen parts of Georgian London - can tell us much about the culture of that period. This fascinating book examines largely forgotten small houses that survive from the eighteenth century and sheds new light on both the era’s urban architecture and the lives of a culturally distinctive metropolitan population. Peter Guillery discusses how and where, by and for whom the houses were built, stressing vernacular continuity and local variability. He investigates the effects of creeping industrialization (both on house building and on the occupants), and considers the nature of speculative suburban growth. Providing rich and evocative illustrations, he compares these houses to urban domestic architecture elsewhere, as in North America, and suggests that the eighteenth-century vernacular metropolis has enduring influence.
