Description:
The project series documents "Secoli E Milenni" a series of drawings by Pettena in 2014. The drawing series shows the passing of time through the illustration of a monument slowly decaying and overcome by nature. "With the passing of millennia everything may disappear and only traces remain of the fabric of previous cultures, superimposed one on the other, but in the end, Nature re-elaborates and recovers its role, prevailing in the end over the small quarrelsomeness of centuries: Nature recounts the millennia, the thousands, the millions of years." [1] The project series contains six printouts of the drawings, a photographic reproduction showing all six drawings, and a video montage of the drawings. Description:
The project series documents "Architecture Forgiven by Nature", an installation design by Pettena in 2017. The installation consists of an old water tower at the top of a hill in Brufa, covered with a metal grill. The intention is for plants to grow from the grill and hide the tower behind vegetation. The installation also included a staircase hidden behind the metal grill to give access to the top of the tower, so it could be used as a belvedere. "An additional function therefore joins the usual one, as nature helps to integrate a banal architecture into the landscape while also changing it into a place of consciousness and better understanding of both the environment and the art world." [1] The project is also known as "Torre di Brufa". The project series contains a drawing, printouts of digital renderings, plans of the structure surrounding the water tower, and video of Pettena showing the model of the tower. Description:
The project series documents the installation "In Absence of Bodies" designed by Pettena in 2011 for the Stromerein Performance Festival in Zurich, Switzerland. The installation consists of clothes lines hung in the main square of the city and refers to Pettena's previous installation "Laundry" in 1969. In this case "[...] it is not laundry that, being hung out in the main square of the city, polemically ‘violate’ the context of the power. Rather, it is a statement on the body in its absence, as the performance takes place in a dance and theatre festival where the body is always protagonist." [1] A second edition was also presented at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art in Salt Lake City, in 2013. The project series documents the project "Ice House I" for which Pettena once again studied the transformation of a building overtaken by nature. The project consisted of pouring water on the walls of an abandoned school building in Minneapolis and letting it freeze during the night to obtain a building covered by ice. "The school preserved its typology, the typical form of that typology, but once coated in ice it was the material that transformed it: it came alive, for it had been worked by nature." It is unclear if this project was ever performed. The project series contains photographs of the frozen building, sketches, a perspective drawing, and project descriptions in English and in Italian. This drawing is a reinterpretation of a previous project by Pettena "Situazioni Competitive" in 1971. "Here architecture, albeit with the same characteristic of competitiveness, becomes indistinct, confused, no longer the leading actor, at the mercy of an unknown context (a desert? the nature of an alien planet?) which, threatening to overwhelm it, seems to nullify its every need and characteristic." Description:
This project series documents the sound performance "Tunnel Sonoro." It was created in 1966, when Pettena was experimenting with music and worked with musicians. "Tunnel Sonoro" was one of the results of his collaborations with musicians. This project consists of a sound performance during which a performer, entirely dressed in a metallic bodysuit, crosses a narrow tunnel "in which, by scrapping against the surfaces, their body 'played' the environment, imitating the sound of the wind [...]." [1] The performance was conceived for the (Musica Elettronica Viva), a live acoustic and electronic improvisational group from Rome. The project series contains a project description in Italian and in English, a reproduction of a publication from the Biennale di Firenze describing the project, and drawings of the tunnel and the metallic bodysuit. The installation consisted of a framed three dimensional 'picture' in which is placed two benches and a table, and perspective is added in with paint to give the impression of depth. "A picture that, for once, has a depth (so that you can enter it) is in fact a place, the place where names change, the place where natures change, the location of a shift between real and imaginary, a door opening onto a reality that is certainly imagined, but that you can pass through."
