Summary:
This fifth volume in Lars Müller’s Architect’s Studio series is dedicated to the Nairobi-based architects Cave_bureau. This acclaimed collective of architects and researchers-- the first Kenyan firm to appear at the Venice Architecture Biennale, in 2021-- explores the synergy between architecture, urbanism and nature, and curates performative events of resistance within caves along the Great Rift Valley in East Africa. The cave, as physical space and as metaphor, is seen by the collective as a provocation to test the limits of contemporary architecture. Here, Cave_bureau’s Stella Mutegi and Kabage Karanja describe eight of their projects. Photographs are accompanied by essays posing questions about the future of architecture in the age of the Anthropocene, the effects of colonial extraction and erasure on African architecture, as well as the specificity of each continent and each geographic space.

Summary:
Orientalism's Interlocutors contests the idea that Orientalist art simply expresses the politics of Western domination and argues instead that it was often produced through cross-cultural interactions. Focusing on paintings and other representations of North African and Ottoman cultures, by both local artists and Westerners, the contributors contend that the stylistic similarities between indigenous and Western Orientalist art mask profound interpretive differences, which, upon examination, can reveal a visual language of resistance to colonization. The essays also demonstrate how marginalized voices and viewpoints—especially women‘s—within Western Orientalism decentered and destabilized colonial authority Among the artists considered are the Algerian painters Azouoau Mammeri and Mohammed Racim; Turkish painter Osman Hamdi Bey; British landscape painter Barbara Bodichon; and the French painter Henri Regnault.

Summary:
A graduate of London's Royal College of Art, David Adjaye formed Adjaye Associates in 2000, with a multicultural design team dedicated to an international perspective. Adjaye's early residential designs critiqued the Victorian streets around them, and also focused on the society-building aspects of city life – public buildings, commemorative spaces and urban gathering places for children. More recently Adjaye has conducted important research into African architecture, and collaborated with Chris Ofili on installations that unite Ofili's paintings with Adjaye's explorations of light and space. Ouput showcases some 25 designs and includes revealing interviews with Adjaye and Aureliusz Kowalczyk.

Summary:
The aftermath of the Covid restrictions, mental problems, being confronted with the influx of people with a different background and culture, the alienation of ourselves and of others, not being able to relate to other people; these can all cause deep feelings of loneliness. What is loneliness, as different from solitude? Whereas solitude is a chosen condition that refrains from social relations, loneliness suffers from the lack of these. The three essays in this book each explore a side of loneliness, strongly connected to the encounter with the other. South-African psychologist Wahbie Long lays out what kind of relationships to the outside world emerge from childhood experiences of playing and relating to others. French philosopher Marie-José Mondzain uses the metaphor of architecture with its terms as threshold, doors, walls, windows, a bench in front of the frontal wall; elements that construct '‘home'', the architectural and emotional place where encounters can happen, where ‘'strangers'’ should be welcomed and trusted. French psychoanalyst Lysiane Lamantowicz discusses a form of loneliness that we see all around us: the consequences of social networks on the internet.
