Summary:
This publication explores the ways in which the development of the built environment has contributed to health and well-being problems and how the physical design of the places we live in may support, or constrain, healthy lifestyle choices. It sets out how understanding these relationships more fully may lead to policy and practice that reduces health inequalities, increases well-being and allows people to live more flourishing, fulfilling lives. It examines the consequences of ‘car orientated’ design, the ‘toxic’ High Street, and poor quality, cramped housing; and the importance of nature in cities, and of initiatives such as community gardening, healthy food programmes and Park Run. It questions whether Heritage is always conducive to well-being and offers lessons from holistic and innovative programmes from the UK, North America and Australia which have successfully improved community and individual health and well-being.

Summary:
How do you find out about historic buildings and places? A good place to start is with visual evidence. Original drawings, topographical views, surveys, maps, photographs, and other historic visual sources help to support an understanding of how a building or location appears the way it does today. Interpreting such material requires knowledge of historic design and mapping conventions, the place of the drawings in the construction process, the methods and techniques used to create engraved or topographical views, and the equipment and processes used in photography at particular times. The authors of this book explain the provenance, purpose, and terminology of a range of visual sources from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, and explore how they can help—or sometimes hinder—an understanding of the original form and subsequent changes to a building, site, or landscape.

Summary:
This second volume in the "Future Cities Laboratory Indicia" series focuses on the tools, methods and approaches needed for urban research. In short, following Marshall McLuhan’s famous provocation, the editors focus less on the message and more on the medium of research. This involves retreating from research contents—the topics, themes, questions, hypotheses, insights, ideas, concepts and thoughts—for the moment to consider the materials, methods, tools, techniques and approaches that support them. This change in perspective reveals a rich array of research approaches that include two- and three-dimensional mapping of vegetation, temperature and humidity, in conjunction with point cloud terrestrial and airborne laser-scanning technology; gathering data from sensors and geospatial data and the emergence of “solution spaces” and multi-dimensional complexity science; subject-oriented approaches to behavioral and cognitive decision making in city navigation.

Summary:
Gorgeously quiet in color and composition, Agnes Martin's paintings have a distinctive grace that sets them apart from those of the Abstract Expressionists of her day and the Minimalist artists she inspired. Martin attributed her grid-based works to metaphysical motivations, lending a serene complexity to her oeuvre that has defied any easy categorization. Perhaps for this reason, critical and scholarly analysis of her paintings has been scarce--until now. This important new anthology brings together the most current scholarship on Martin's paintings by twelve multidisciplinary essayists who consider various aspects of the artist's four-decade career. Organized by Dia Art Foundation, whose extensive holdings of Martin's paintings and ambitions to support in-depth research on the works are unparalleled, the publication brings renewed focus and energy to Martin's career and her contributions to the art historical narrative

Summary:

Summary:
Martin, an acclaimed architect, emerges from a coma after a roadside accident to find his world transformed: not only has the commission of a lifetime been taken from him, but his injury has left him with neglect syndrome, a loss of spatial awareness that has rendered him unfit to practice and unable to recognize the extent of his illness. Despite support from his formerly estranged brother and two grown daughters, his paranoia builds, alienating those closest to him. His only solace is found in the parallels he draws between himself and gifted Soviet-era architect Konstantin Melnikov, who survived Stalin’s disfavor by retreating into obscurity. As Martin retraces Melnikov’s life and his own fateful decisions, he becomes increasingly unsettled, until the discovery of the harrowing truth about the night of his accident hurtles him toward a deadly confrontation.

Summary:
Angela Davis provides a powerful history of the social and political influence of whiteness and elitism in feminism, from abolitionist days to the present, and demonstrates how the racist and classist biases of its leaders inevitably hampered any collective ambitions. While Black women were aided by some activists like Sarah and Angelina Grimke and the suffrage cause found unwavering support in Frederick Douglass, many women played on the fears of white supremacists for political gain rather than take an intersectional approach to liberation. Here, Davis not only contextualizes the legacy and pitfalls of civil and women’s rights activists, but also discusses Communist women, the murder of Emmitt Till, and Margaret Sanger’s racism. Davis shows readers how the inequalities between Black and white women influence the contemporary issues of rape, reproductive freedom, housework and child care in this bold and indispensable work.

Summary:
The last decade was largely defined by consumption and greed. An untold story, however, is the rise in benevolent giving seen in institutional, public and private sectors. Such characteristics as altruism and duty are now as influential as self-interest. The geography of aid has also broadened; networks of NGOs now supplement philanthropy and the global operations of official channels. It has become a crucial counterpart of authorized programs; agencies that provide vital services rely on contributions to augment official doctrines. Yet, the current recession threatens to limit support, diminishing aid at this critical moment when distress is increasing. A new culture of giving that includes volunteering and action, coupled with accumulated expertise may enable imminent needs to be met. The Gift Economy presents aid's history as an index of past and current relationships, indicating how its future promises a significant global role.
