Summary:
Jean Prouvé designed "The Tropical House" in 1949 as a prototype for inexpensive, easily assembled housing to transport to France's African colonies. Fabricated in the designer's French workshops, the components for the house were completed in 1951 and flown disassembled to Africa. The house was erected in the town of Brazzaville, Congo, where it remained for nearly 50(...)

Summary:
Jean Prouvé designed "The Tropical House" in 1949 as a prototype for inexpensive, easily assembled housing to transport to France's African colonies. Fabricated in the designer's French workshops, the components for the house were completed in 1951 and flown disassembled to Africa. The house was erected in the town of Brazzaville, Congo, where it remained for nearly 50 years. Jean Prouvé: Tropical House is an in-depth look at the early French modernist's applied theories of prefabricated architecture. Copiously illustrated, this book studies the development of Prouvé's demountable buildings and houses and includes never-before-seen archival materials from the extensive collections of the Centre Pompidou and the designer's estate. The final chapter traces architectural historian Robert Rubin's voyage of discovery as he restored and prepared an exhibition of this iconic experiment in prefabricated housing, along with an appendix of press articles from the period to position the work in its contemporary context.

Summary:
The most ''African'' of the Brazilian villages in the south of Bahia bears a Swiss name. Helvécia was founded 200 years ago by Swiss and German colonists, and the coffee grown on its vast estates produced great wealth for them. This would not have been possible without exploitation: in the mid-19th century, for every 200 white colonists, there were 2,000 slaves of African(...)

Summary:
The most ''African'' of the Brazilian villages in the south of Bahia bears a Swiss name. Helvécia was founded 200 years ago by Swiss and German colonists, and the coffee grown on its vast estates produced great wealth for them. This would not have been possible without exploitation: in the mid-19th century, for every 200 white colonists, there were 2,000 slaves of African origin. Black people still make up the majority of the population today; many do not know the origins of their community. With great sensitivity and in dialogue with the inhabitants, Swiss photographer Dom Smaz goes in search of traces of the past, capturing the lives of the local people. Smaz’s pictures and text contributions by Shalini Randeria, among others, allow a new look at history and the origins of Switzerland’s wealth, revealing global histories of interconnectedness and power relations of the past that continue into the present.

Summary:
"Constructed narratives" brings together essays and several recently completed buildings by David Adjaye, in the United States and elsewhere. In the essays, Adjaye shows how his approach to the design of temporary pavilions and furniture, private houses, and installations at the 2015 Venice Biennale feeds into his designs for public buildings. Other essays discuss his engagement with geography, the urban environment, his approach to materiality, and architectural types. The presented projects include two public libraries and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, all in Washington D.C., a residential mixed-use building in New York, and a hybrid art-retail building in Beirut. Two of Adjaye’s current projects are also included.
