Summary:
For Siegfried Kracauer, the urban ornament was not just an aspect of design; it was the medium through which city dwellers interpreted the metropolis itself. In “Ornaments of the Metropolis”, Henrik Reeh traces variations on the theme of the ornament in Kracauer's writings on urbanism, from his early journalism in Germany between the wars to his "sociobiography" of Jacques Offenbach in Paris. Kracauer (1889-1966), often associated with the Frankfurt School and the intellectual milieu of Walter Benjamin, is best known for his writings on cinema and the philosophy of history. Reeh examines Kracauer's lesser-known early work, much of it written for the trendsetting newspaper Frankfurter Zeitung in the 1920s and early 1930s, and analyzes Kracauer's continuing reflections on modern urban life, through the pivotal idea of ornament. Kracauer deciphers the subjective experience of the city by viewing fragments of the city as dynamic ornaments; an employment exchange, a day shelter for the homeless, a movie theatre, and an amusement park become urban microcosms. Reeh focuses on three substantial works written by Kracauer before his emigration to the United States in 1940. In the early autobiographical novel “Ginster, Written by Himself”, a young architect finds aesthetic pleasure in the ornamental forms that are largely unused in the profession of the time. The collection “Streets of Berlin and Elsewhere”, with many essays from Kracauer's years in Berlin, documents the subjectiveness of urban life. Finally, “Jacques Offenbach and the Paris of His Time” shows how the superficial -- in a sense, ornamental -- milieu of the operetta evolved into a critical force during the Second Empire. Reeh argues that Kracauer's novel, essays, and historiography all suggest ways in which the subjective can reappropriate urban life. The book also includes a series of photographs by the author that reflect the ornamental experience of the metropolis in Paris, Frankfurt, and other cities.

Summary:
Since 1988, Frankfurt-based artist Karsten Bott has been collecting everyday objects--often discarded--and cataloguing them. Currently, his archive contains an unbelievable 500,000 objects. Bott is interested in making an archaeological inventory of things people need, noting how they use them and how these objects are related to one another. For One of Each, which is designed like a small dictionary or encyclopedia, he photographed more than 2,000 objects in his collection, which were carefully measured and alphabetically organized according to subjects such as "Bedroom", "Jewelry", "Sex" and "War". Within the "Film" category, for example, one might find a photograph of an Oscar award reproduction, as well as an old popcorn bucket. The photographs of the objects are taken in an unbiased, straightforward manner on a grey background, with dimensions and labels listed below.

Summary:
The creation of the Frankfurt School of critical theory in the 1920s saw the birth of some of the most exciting and challenging writings of the twentieth century. It is out of this background that the great critic Theodor Adorno emerged. His finest essays are collected here, offering the reader unparalleled insights into Adorno's thoughts on culture. He argued that the culture industry commodified and standardized all art. In turn this suffocated individuality and destroyed critical thinking. At the time, Adorno was accused of everything from overreaction to deranged hysteria by his many detractors. In today's world, where even the least cynical of consumers is aware of the influence of the media, Adorno's work takes on a more immediate significance. "The culture industry" is an unrivalled indictment of the banality of mass culture.

Summary:
"Whoop to the duck!" is both a comprehensive retrospective and a preview of the work of the SPLITTERWERK label, active in the conflictive context between engineering and art since 1988. The publication covers the spectrum from urbanistic designs for our “post-urban society” to the return of the ornament and the exemplary implementation of new housing designs. Frank Lloyd Wright’s open plan, Adolf Loos’ Raumplan or Margarete Schütte Lihotzky’s Frankfurt Kitchen find their contemporary continuation in the Graz Apartment. In the 21st century, the walls have a custom-made world of images which allows functions to be added “on demand”. The investigation of experimental surfaces has led Splitterwerk to fundamentally reassess imagery in architecture. It is a revival of a different nature for the "duck" (R. Venturi / D. Scott Brown) which calls for a further paradigm shift in architecture.

Summary:
In The Rise of Fashion, Daniel Leonhard Purdy brings together key writings from the Enlightenment to the twentieth century that explore fashion as the ultimate expression of modernity. Making available many previously untranslated or otherwise unfamiliar works from French, German, and English, Purdy establishes an extraordinary lineage of fashion commentary dating back to Mandeville and Voltaire, which laid the groundwork for the writings on commodity culture of Adorno, Benjamin, and the Frankfurt School. From critiques of aristocratic excess to accounts of fashion’s influence on our ideals of masculinity or femininity, from the figure of the dandy and the eroticism of clothing to the class politics of fashion, this landmark reader includes works by philosophers (Carlyle, Rousseau, Georg Simmel) and social theorists (Herbert Spencer, Veblen), as well as writers (Goethe, Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Wilde) and critics (Karl Kraus, Adolf Loos, Simone de Beauvoir).

Summary:
Leipzig is the perfect example of an east German boomtown. Courageous decisions were made early on, relocating, for instance, the exhibition site out of the inner city and building the most modern fair complex in Europe in just three years. Countless buildings for trade, commerce and the service industry have appeared, and Leipzig is now the largest finance centre in Germany after Frankfurt, with more than 100 bank branches. Leipzig has always profited from its long tradition as a commercial and bourgeois city, home to trade fairs, and at the beginning of this century Saxony's metropolis was the second richest city in Germany. The restoration of prestigious buildings such as the Madlerpassage and Specks Hof became well-known, even industrial monuments found new users and also residential and cultural buildings attracted attention. This book looks critically at the current situation, providing an overview of more than 70 selected buildings.
