Summary:
For Climate's Sake! sets itself the goal of conveying the knowledge revealed by current climate research in a manner that is both concise and appealing. It differs from other books on climate change principally in the way it is conceived as a visual reader that diliberately uses the effectiveness and power of the image to present the theme in a graphic way. Extensive series of images with large photographs and informative diagrams accompany well-researched essays on and around the themes of climate history, research and policy and thus offer an in-depth examination. The book provides insights into the history of the earth's climate and reveals the factors that are responsible for climate change. It poses questions and provides answers: why is the earth becoming warmer? What are the consequences we must reckon with? What can we do against this? Who determines the future?

This catalogue for the traveling exhibition Space Is the Place (whose title refers to a movie about the super-experimental and influential jazz musician, Sun Ra) takes an inspired look at the theme of space exploration. Encompassing the concept of infinite potential, as well as historical outer-space successes and failures, it features installations, paintings, works on paper, and sound and video works made during the past 15 years by Laurie Anderson, Nina Katchadourian, Oleg Kulik, Julian LaVerdiere, Aleksandra Mir and Damian Ortega, among others, and investigates global attitudes from the time the Soviets launched Sputnik nearly 50 years ago to the era of the explosion of the Columbia space shuttle in 2003. While the featured artworks are united by the theme of outer space, the open-ended parameters of the subject also invite consideration of the technological, environmental and sociopolitical forces affecting life on earth today.

Summary:
If participation has been an ideal in politics since ancient democracy, in art it became central only with the avant-gardes emerging from WWI and the Russian Revolution. Politics and aesthetics are still catching up with each other. In the 21st Century, since the revolutionary unrest of the 1960s, participation in art and architecture has lost its utopian glow and become the focus of a fierce debate: does ‘participatory’ art and architecture shape social reality, or is it shaped by it?Contemporary critics see in participation only technocratic control, while others embrace it as a viable politics in an era of global capitalism. This volume breaks the impasse by looking at how participants themselves exert power, rather than being victimized or liberated from it. From artists hijacking Google Earth to protesters setting up a museum of the revolution in Cairo, art, architecture, and daily life are explored in their participatory dimension.

In 2012, the team came together again for the Serpentine Gallery’s acclaimed annual commission, as part of the London 2012 Festival, the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad. Their pavilion takes visitors beneath the Serpentine’s lawn to explore the hidden history of its previous pavilions. Supporting the structure from below, eleven columns symbolize past pavilions, and a twelfth represents the current one. The pavilion’s interior is clad in cork, to evoke the excavated earth, and is built as a network of pathways and trenches. Herzog & de Meuron and Weiwei’s archaeological approach creates a space that invites visitors to look beneath the surface of the park as well as back in time to the inspiration of earlier structures. Foreword and interview by Julia Peyton-Jones, Hans Ulrich Obrist

So far and so fast has textile technology developed in the last five or so years that many of the ideas flagged in the first edition of " Techno textiles " have now become reality, and countless new ones have been conceived. " Techno Textiles 2 " has been thoroughly revised and updated to showcase the latest developments in the field, and includes 80 per cent new illustrations, all in colour. The book is divided into three sections : "Innovations" which explores how the newest textiles are dreamt up and made. "Applications" – from fashion and design, to architecture and art. "Reference" which includes a glossary, biographies, directories of addresses and public collections, and an extensive bibliography.

This handbook of low- and no-carbon materials for architects and designers focuses on sustainable materials, their sourcing, technical properties and the processes required for their use in architecture. The book showcases new and rediscovered processes for material fabrication, responsible sourcing and creative material design. Material properties (structural, thermal, fire, health and life safety) are described and case studies from around the world illustrate the inventive ways in which these materials have been deployed in the built environment. The book is designed as an introduction to the exciting and rapidly changing world of construction materials. With a better understanding of the social, environmental and economic sustainability of any given material - alongside its technical properties - students of architecture can lead the change in responsible and creative material use.

Summary:
In 1970 Robert Smithson (1938-1973), one of the most innovative and provocative artists of the twentieth century, created the landmark earthwork "Spiral Jetty" at Rozel Point on Utah's Great Salt Lake. This dramatic and highly influential work forms a coil 1,500 feet long and 15 feet wide and stretches out counter-clockwise into the lake's translucent red water. Composed of black basalt rocks and earth, the sculpture comprises the materials of its location: mud, salt crystals, rocks, water. The contributors to this comprehensive publication consider the sculpture in relation to its eponymous companions - a text work and a film. These essays situate this renowned series of works alongside Smithson's critical writings, proposals, drawings, sources, and models. Amply illustrated with archival and new photographs of the Jetty and many comparative illustrations, this book makes evident why Smithson's art and writings have had such a powerful impact on art and art theory for over thirty years.

The Victorian age is much closer to us in time than we might believe. Yet at that time, in the most technologically advanced nation in the world, people buried meat in fresh earth to prevent mould forming and wrung sheets out in boiling water with their bare hands. Such household drudgery was routinely performed by the grandparents of people still living, but the knowledge of it has passed as if it had never been. Judith Flanders's book is laid out like a Victorian house, taking you through the story of daily life from room to room. In each space she depicts the home's furnishings and decoration: from childbirth in the master bedroom, through the scullery and kitchen, the separate male and female domains of the drawing room and the parlour, and ending in the sickroom. A rich selection from diaries, letters, advice books, magazines, and paintings fills the rooms with the people and personalities of the age.

Summary:
The renaissance of wood in architecture began in the early 1990s following the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. A lively interest in sustainable materials made wood particularly attractive and it became an important feature in the developing global ecology. Wood as a building material for the home has become independent from the aesthetic designs of a well-known Swedish furniture chain, and it now stands for a healthy interior environment, free of harmful toxic substances, with naturally balanced humidity and comfortable, regulated temperatures. This volume documents in full technical detail some 25 timber buildings in three main areas: residential buildings, holiday homes, and living and working. The individual projects cover a large range of sizes, budgets, and types of construction, and they also show wood in combination with such materials as stone, concrete, and steel. The featured work comes from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Finland, Ireland, USA, Canada, China, Australia and Brazil, and the architects include Philip Gumuchdjian, Mario Botta, Kengo Kuma and Baumschlager + Eberle.
