Summary:
Beautifully produced to include a selection of family photographs from the artist's childhood and ancestry alongside generous documentation of her recent concurrent one-person exhibitions in Krefeld, Germany and Nuremberg, this volume sheds new light on one of the most influential American artists of her generation. Taking as her starting point an eighteenth-century American silk embroidery entitled "First, Second and Last Scene of Mortality," which depicts a white woman working at a table while a white child and a black servant rest on one side of her and a closed black coffin sits on the other side, Smith here develops several narrative threads that revolve around the theme of the unmarried woman. With excursions into Christian iconography and the history of the American postcolonial era, she speaks also to the archetype of the inspired female creator or artist.

Summary:
Gorgeously quiet in color and composition, Agnes Martin's paintings have a distinctive grace that sets them apart from those of the Abstract Expressionists of her day and the Minimalist artists she inspired. Martin attributed her grid-based works to metaphysical motivations, lending a serene complexity to her oeuvre that has defied any easy categorization. Perhaps for this reason, critical and scholarly analysis of her paintings has been scarce--until now. This important new anthology brings together the most current scholarship on Martin's paintings by twelve multidisciplinary essayists who consider various aspects of the artist's four-decade career. Organized by Dia Art Foundation, whose extensive holdings of Martin's paintings and ambitions to support in-depth research on the works are unparalleled, the publication brings renewed focus and energy to Martin's career and her contributions to the art historical narrative

Summary:
Artistic representations of landscape are studies in a half-dozen disciplines (art history, geography, literature, philosophy, politics, sociology), and there is no master narrative or historiographic genealogy to frame interpretations. Geographers are interested in political formations (and geography, as a discipline, is increasingly non-visual). Art historians have written extensively on landscape, but there have not been any recent synthetic attemps or theoretical overviews. At the same time, painters, and other artists often feel they 'possess' the landscape of the region in which they live; that ownership takes place at a non-verbal level, and seems incommensurate with the discourses of art history or geography. Landscape Theory, volume 6 in The Art Seminar series, is the first book to bring together different disciplines and practices, in order to understand how best to conceptualize landscape in art.

Summary:
The artist Michael Webb, trained as an architect, operates at the intersection of art and architecture and is widely known for creatively exploring the outer limits of drawing techniques, including orthographic and perspectival projection systems. He is a founding member of Archigram, which formed at the Architectural Association in London in the early 1960s. The legendary avant-garde group is known for their fantastical projects that were often interpreted as critiques of contemporary architectural theory and practice. "Two Journeys" is the first comprehensive monograph on Webb’s oeuvre and assembles sixty years of the artist’s work into a continuously evolving narrative about the multifaceted relationships among the built environment, landscape, and moving vehicles. He investigates these relationships through the act of drawing using notions of time, space, and speed, which are artfully mediated by the precision of mathematics and tempered by abstraction.

The Funambulist, issue 20. ''Settler Colonialism in Turtle Island'' is a first ever issue of The Funambulist that was guest-edited. This issue was edited by Turtle Island Indigenous scholars and activists Melanie K. Yazzie and Nick Estes (who had contributed twice to the magazine in the past). The issue proposes several facets of Indigenous struggles in Turtle Island (what many people call ''North America''.) Most of them depict Native lives in spaces that are not the reservations where the colonial narrative usually situates them. Whether in large cities such as Los Angeles or Saskatoon, or settler border towns in the periphery of reservations, the urban dimension of the first half of the dossier is omnipresent. The second half is dedicated to various forms of Indigenous resistance through space-making, anti-colonial solidarities, representative transgression, or architecture researches/projects.

Summary:

Summary:
Over the past 30 years, artist Sophie Calle (born 1953) has orchestrated small moments of life as art, each time establishing a game, then setting its rules for herself and for others. Calle's work springs up around "the association of an image and a narrative around a game or autobiographical ritual, which strives to summon up the angst of absence while creating a relationship to others that is controlled by the artist," as curator and art critic Christine Macel puts it. Calle has carried out and documented these melancholy games in books, photographs, videos, films and performances. This publication finds the artist experimenting with yet another mediums-the postcard set. Taking stock of her entire oeuvre, this set of postcards functions as a beautiful portfolio of Calle's work, as well as a new investigation of it, in an appropriately nomadic format.

"Unseen City" widens the pinhole of our perspective by allowing us to view the world from the high-altitude eyes of a turkey vulture and the distinctly low-altitude eyes of a snail. The narrative allows us to eavesdrop on the comically frenetic life of a squirrel and peer deep into the past with a ginkgo biloba tree. Each of these organisms has something unique to tell us about our neighborhoods and, chapter by chapter, "Unseen City" takes us on a journey that is part nature lesson and part love letter to the world’s urban jungles. With the right perspective, a walk to the subway can be every bit as entrancing as a walk through a national park.

Summary:
Architectural history often remains silent on the subject of how architecture is born. The VMX Architects Agenda demonstrates that this very aspect can be instructive. Within its pages VMX Architects ask : "What is it that constitutes our firm? Who or what has shaped us, influenced us, has continued to inspire us?" Leafing through ten years of office diaries they identify influences from their student years, from architectural discourse, social context and daily practice. Memories, facts, speculations and anecdotes take turns in a narrative that is both unique and generic. It is the personal history of VMX, but also the description of occurrences familiar to every architect. The sum total is a story of well-spent time, lost time, gained time and of ideals over time. The VMX Agenda is the truth, "inasmuch as truth is what we produce".

Summary:
Vast areas of the Netherlands and other states seem to be filling up with a suburban "matter" of low cost housing, low rent offices, warehouses and other low density elements. How are we to cope with this matter that is turning our environments into one "sea of mediocrity", one vast "greyness", an equation of difference and individualism? Is it possible to reconsider this situation by carrying density to extremes and ruffling the texture with inserts or polarities? This book examines the possibilities of these extremes. It sets out to discover the prospects and limitations, the world of the extreme Floor Area Ratio, FARMAX. FARMAX reads as an architectural narrative composed of studies and designs made by MVRDV and students from Delft University of Technology, the Berlage Institute and the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and Urban Planning, along with contributions by other authors.
