Ice House II (1972)
AP207.S1.1972.PR01
Description:
The project series documents "Ice House II" a project which consisted of freezing a small house in suburban Minneapolis, by pouring water into a wooden mold surrounding the house and letting the water freeze to create a block of ice. "If the addition of material then leads, paradoxically, to the disappearence of the 'architectural' object, this subtraction only highlights the serial repetitiveness of the dwellings in American suburbia." [1] It is unclear if this project was ever performed. The project series contains photographs of the frozen house, photographic reproductions of aerial views and plans of the neighbourhood for the selection of the house, sketches and a perspective drawing. Description:
The project series documents the installation "Forgiving Architecture" presented at the ReMap2, Athens Biennal, in 2009. The installation consists of strips of paper vertically hung across the facades of the building to be moved by the breeze. "The air of Athens, its constant breezes, suggest the extent to which nature can “forgive,” can find a poetic communication, like the foliage of a forest in the wind. Nothing can be lighter and more mobile than static architecture!" [1] The project series contains sketches, perspective drawings, visual instructions, and photographs of the installation, including digital photographs of the installation in Athens in 2009. Description:
The project series documents the performance "Isole Abbandonate Della Laguna" held at the Palazzo Grassi, in Venezia, during "The Art of Performance" in 1979. The setting for the performance is similar to a lecture, where the performer stands on a podium placed above television screens playing films on the abandoned islands of the Venetian Lagoon. The performer remains silent, walking around the stage. "He finally stops at the stand but, while he should speak about the environment and its pollution, his lips remain sealed. After trying several times he disappears upwards, into “the darkness of his failures“." [1] The project series contains photographs of the performance and storyboards. Description:
This project series documents Pettena's performance "Vestirsi Di Siede", also know in English as "Wearable Chairs". The performance was carried out between 3 pm and 5 pm on February 12, 1971, in the streets of Minneapolis by ten students of Pettena at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The students, each wearing a portable chair harnessed on their back, wandered around the city, either by foot or by bus, and than returned to the college. "In this performance, it was the body that activated and gave meaning to the object: the chair only taking on meaning when carried, otherwise, it became disjointed." [1] The chairs were then put on display at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. A second edition of the performance was also carried out with the students from Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA) in Milan, 2011, and an installation of the chairs was presented at the exhibition "Un art pauvre" at the Centre Pompidou in 2016. The project series contains photographs of the performance by the students of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and photographs of the exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Art in 1971. It also contains three sketches for the chairs, a drawing of the performance and a statement about the perfomance. The project series also includes photographs of the performance of the NABA students in 2011. Description:
The project series documents "Stanza", an installation presented in the exhibition "Beneaugurando" at the Galleria Megapoli, in Milan in 1987. The installation consists of a tent made of white gauze built in the gallery. "Only the openings made at the four corners, at the junctions of the four walls, permitted entry into a quadrangular space with a ceiling in the form of a low pyramid, where there was continuity between the walls and ceiling as in a cave." [1] This installation was also presented in the exhibition "Sistemi binari 1" at the Galleria Neon Campobase, in Bologna in 2008. The project series contains a sketch for the installation and promotional material from the Galleria Megapoli about the installation, including a press release and a promotional card.
