Summary:
This is not a book about sound. It is a study of sounds that aims to write the resonance and response they call for. John Mowitt seeks to critique existing models in the expanding field of sound studies and draw attention to sound as an object of study that solicits a humanistic approach encompassing many types of sounds, not just readily classified examples such as speech, music, industrial sounds, or codified signals. Mowitt is particularly interested in the fact that beyond hearing and listening we “audit” sounds and do so by drawing on paradigms of thought not easily accommodated within the concept of "sound studies." To draw attention to the ways in which sounds often are not perceived for the social and political functions they serve, each chapter presents a culturally resonant sound—including a whistle, an echo, a gasp, and silence—to show how sounds enable critical social and political concepts such as dialogue, privacy, memory, social order, and art-making. Sounds: The Ambient Humanities significantly engages, provokes, and contributes to the dynamic field and inquiry of sound studies.

Summary:
Blending pop culture iconography with the existential threat of technological creations turning on their creators, "Emotional robots" is a compulsively readable graphic novella set in an all-too presciently depicted world in which advanced robots successfully compete with humans—in sports, music, and art—in pursuit of emotional intelligence. Displaced by the robots' technological triumph, humans abandon Earth in search of a new planet to call home. But what happens to the robots when newer, faster, smarter, better robots replace them? What happens when civil unrest grows between robot generations? An astute take on the human condition and the illusory promises of technology, "Emotional robots" is captivating fable for the modern age. With keen wit and dark humor, it artfully tackles universal themes urgently relevant to our time, asking readers the question faced by each new generation of humans (and robots): Is history condemned to repeat itself?

N-ground or multi-ground (Superground & Underground) concept applied to Seoul, call us to a new qualitative development that responds to the possibility to superimpose a new dense floor in the old infrastructures. A new ReCitying Topos on, inside, in, where and through which to develop new/old programs, uses and activities of life and relationship. The singularity of Seoul is the capacity for the city to combine and manage all the new global urban paradigmatic challenges. Seoul new qualitative development responds does not intend to "continue" or "recreate" the traditional city. Nor impose or positionate, transforming it, built machines or objects but superimpose a new dense floor (container and articulator at the same time) in the old obsolete infrastructures, that becomes a new Re-Citying. The old infrastructures are revealed as the ideal spaces to support these new floors, real and virtual at time.

Summary:
Acclaimed engineer and historian Henry Petroski explores our core infrastructure from both historical and contemporary perspectives, explaining how essential their maintenance is to America’s economic health. Petroski reveals the genesis of the many parts of America’s highway system—our interstate numbering system, the centerline that divides roads, and such taken-for-granted objects as guardrails, stop signs, and traffic lights—all crucial to our national and local infrastructure. A compelling work of history, "The road taken" is also an urgent clarion call aimed at American citizens, politicians, and anyone with a vested interest in our economic well-being. Physical infrastructure in the United States is crumbling, and Petroski reveals the complex and challenging interplay between government and industry inherent in major infrastructure improvement. The road we take in the next decade toward rebuilding our aging infrastructure will in large part determine our future national prosperity.

Summary:
In 2009, the artist Anna Ostoya created a booklet with textual collages using an essay by the political theorist Chantal Mouffe, ''Politics and passions: The stakes of democracy'' (2002). In the essay, Mouffe critiqued the then-dominant ‘beyond left and right’ politics of neoliberalism and warned of its dangers – the rise of right-wing populist parties. Fascinated by Mouffe’s strikingly prophetic ideas, as well as her bold call to fight the status quo in order to radicalise democracy and to prevent violence, Ostoya returned to the booklet in 2019. She composed for it a series of portraits based on sketches of people on the New York City subway and on reproductions of her paintings and collages from the preceding decade. She also conducted a conversation with Mouffe about the politics of the last forty years, about the contemporary moment and about art, which is included in this publication.

101 Things that Open and Close the City. 50 leading experts provide tools for analyzing how the Open City is made and unmade. Urban History 101 teaches us that the built environment is not the product of invisible, uncontrollable market forces, but of human-made tools that could have been used differently (or not at all). The Arsenal of Exclusion & Inclusion is an encyclopedia of the human-made tools used by architects, planners, policy-makers, developers, real estate brokers, activists, and other urban actors in the United States to restrict or increase access to the spaces of our cities and suburbs. The Arsenal of Exclusion & Inclusion inventories these tools—or what we call weapons—examines how they have been used, and speculates about how they might be deployed (or retired) to make more open cities in which more people feel welcome in more spaces.

Summary:
Ann Hamilton’s Stylus installation at The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts in St. Louis was conceived as both sanctuary and laboratory--an attempt to link “the building’s interior state of reflection and contemplation to the world outside its opaque walls.” Employing such elements as the silence of a waving hand, the vibratory clicking of thousands of Mexican jumping beans and a set of speakers telling stories to the sky, the Stylus project transformed the Pulitzer space into a unique audio and visual environment. Hamilton’s haunted call and response responded directly to the Tadao Ando-designed building, animated by acoustic elements developed in collaboration with composer and sound designer Shahrokh Yadegari. This volume both documents and builds upon the installation with texts by the artist, exhibition curator Matthias Waschek and Steven Henry Madoff, photographs of the exhibition and an image-based inventory of the artist’s materials and process.

Summary:
''Photography bound: reimagining photobooks and self-publishing'' is essentially a portable library, where each book – selected by the most eclectic and vibrant voices working in the field today – is declared an urgent addition. The result is a multi-part manifesto that radically and intimately engages with photography and publishing. The book unfurls from a three-day conference organised by Antonio Cataldo and Adrià Julià in 2020 at the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design at the University of Bergen and Fotogalleriet, Oslo. The conference found common but fragile ground amid a global health crisis. From there, it managed to catapult discussion and explore in depth the need to print and publish photobooks. Each contribution discloses a unique relationship to photobooks and publishing. Together, they are a trigger for social, political and cultural demands. This book makes a collective call to action – or actions – and asks each reader to reimagine where photography is bound to go.
