Summary:
For over fifty years numerous public intellectuals and social theorists have insisted that community is dead. Some would have us believe that we act solely as individuals choosing our own fates regardless of our surroundings, while other theories place us at the mercy of global forces beyond our control. These two perspectives dominate contemporary views of society, but by rejecting the importance of place they are both deeply flawed. Great American City argues that communities still matter because life is decisively shaped by where you live. To demonstrate the powerfully enduring impact of place, Robert J. Sampson presents here the fruits of over a decade’s research in Chicago combined with his personal observations about life in the city, from Cabrini Green to Trump Tower and Millennium Park to the Robert Taylor Homes.

Beginning with Venusia (2005) and continuing with Mercury Station (2009), Mark von Schlegell's System Series has moved backward in time, investigating the contours of time, memory, perception, and control in the inter-planetary system that emerge off-world in the twenty-second and twenty-third centuries during Earth's full collapse. In the latest installment, Sundogz, set among the water-rich moons of planet Uranus, extremist astro-marine "spacers" have constructed an aquatic world of extraordinary scope and ambition, entirely invisible to the System at large. The Good Fortune, a spaceship en route to Moon Miranda, the most beautiful and troublesome of Uranus's satellites, sends out a party to explore rumors of a secret fish farm in the ring. Now the "Oan Bubble" must attempt to survive its discovery.

Summary:
The subject of light and lighting is more relevant than ever, as evidenced by the UNESCO global celebration of 2015 as the International Year of Light. The exhibition Nightscape 2050 by Lighting Planners Associates (LPA) explores the interactions between people, light, and cities in the year 2050. For LPA the word “nightscape” does not only refer to the evening view, but also includes the individual: “nightscape = humans and cities at night.” The emergence of new light sources such as LEDs, OLEDs, and lasers as well as the evolution of lighting-control technology in the 21st century may dramatically change our living environment. At the same time, numerous natural disasters, manmade disasters, and environmental changes have forced a discussion on how to approach energy consumption including how to power lighting.

Summary:
Parklife is an independent publication edited by Continente Editions about outdoor space, curated by Paola Ristoldo and Alessandro Furchino Capria. The magazine addresses stories of ordinary and uncommon places by developing visual and literary narratives. Driven by a primordial need to create, occupy and control a territory, human being becomes inhabitant of a place defined and circumscribed by and for himself. Why does humanity feel the need to design these spaces? How are they experienced? Through an authorial approach and with unpublished projects, thirteen artists and a confrontation between an architect and a designer explore the concept of the park understood as a place of daily life. All these visions make it possible to conceive green space and its inhabitants as an essential and united part of the city context. Parklife is a refuge from the urban sprawl.

Summary:
During a three-month residency in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, Japanese-born, London-based artist and filmmaker Naoko Takahashi confronted the issues of dislocation, mistranslation and gender politics in the Arab world. In this chapbook, written in the style of a factual report, she takes the reader on a breathless journey through the air-conditioned rooms and arid streets of the modern Arab metropolis, where she feels that every move she makes is misread and that her identity is repeatedly forced upon her and manipulated in ways she cannot control. Takahashi’s work highlights the ambiguities and confusions of identities as played out through language in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual society. Moving from confusion and isolation to anger in the course of the book, she casts her experiences as a modern allegory of alienation. Part of Book Works Chapbook Series.

Summary:
Aggressively rebounding after recessions and the pandemic, sprawling landscapes of tourism in the Mediterranean continue to build upon the iconic spatial typology of sea & sun vacationing: the beach. But behind the leisurely scattered bodies and the quiescent summer shores, beachfronts are assembled as intensely ordered infrastructures for the heavy machineries of tourism. Approaching the beach as an operational socio-technical landscape, this book unpacks stories of construction, programming, and maintenance: from traces of moving sands in Lefkada island to mirror postwar developments in Delos and Mykonos islands, and from historic and bodily excursions to workings of the Athenian riviera to rituals of eco-certification under Blue Flags. The texts frame the beach as a machine, one with protocols of function and metabolic needs, studying how it directs the capture of land and bodies, while establishing forms of environmental control.

Summary:
The book discusses the ways in which the project can critically contribute to an affirmative biopolitical action of substantial emancipation; it considers space an essential agent, and not only a collective capital, or a support, for adapting our lives to the recent profoundly changed conditions. In all the new research on the future of urban space, the renewed interest in life, tragically affected by health, ecological and socio-political crises, raises a crucial theoretical and projective question: what role can space play in maintaining and promoting life in the broader sense of bíos? This book is based on the conviction that there is an urgent need to revisit the Foucauldian notion of biopolitics - free, however, from the privilege given to the goal of control - to rethink the project of the city and territory in transition in an affirmative and emancipatory way.

When we think of climate, the stories we tell about the future are often catastrophic: megastorms, crop failures, and heat waves loom over us, sending a signal that the problem is so vast, so complex, that it’s out of our control. Summary:
When we think of climate, the stories we tell about the future are often catastrophic: megastorms, crop failures, and heat waves loom over us, sending a signal that the problem is so vast, so complex, that it’s out of our control. That narrative is compelling for some, but leaves others feeling hopeless, helpless, and disillusioned. Even the most ardent champions of decarbonization sometimes focus more on sounding the alarm than on mapping out what success might look like. Without positive climate futures, visions of climate adaptation and resilience that we can work toward, it’s much harder to motivate broad-based efforts for change in the present. Through short speculative fiction, essays, and visual art, "Climate imagination" seeks to inspire a wave of narratives about what positive climate futures might look like for communities around the world.
