AP075.S1.1952.PR02
Description:
This project series documents Cornelia Hahn Oberlander's landscape design for the Mill Creek Public Housing Complex between 40th Street, Aspen Street, and Fairmount Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Oberlander worked on this project in the early 1950s as Dan Kiley's associate. They both were consulting for Louis Kahn's office, Kahn, McAllister, Braik, & Day. The first phase of the project consisted of a complex of three seventeen-storey apartment towers accomodating 218 units on a four-acre site. The landscape design consisted of a system of pedestrian areas to connect the site with the city, including a central alley linking Fairmount Avenue to a common green space. Trees to provide shade were planted around the parking spaces and the housing towers. The project was completed in 1954, but most of the landscaping by Kiley and Oberlander was never realized. The Mill Creek complex was demolished in 2002 to make space for the new low-rise public housing development. The project series contains only two reprographic copies of landscape plans. Project
São Victor, Porto
CD034.S1.1974.PR04
Description:
This project series contains reproductions of photographs, drawings and panels displayed in the exhibit to document the São Victor neighbourhood, in Porto, Portugal. The exhibit text explained that: ... the group of 12 houses built for the São Victor neighbourhood was one of SAAL's most important operations, despite the fact that only a small part of the project was carried out. Maintaining the urban fabric of the 'ilhas' (islands) and their internal community ties, the São Victor design combined the responsiveness inherent in the participatory nature of the project with architectural and technical precision. An important case study, it led Álvaro Siza Vieira, the project architect, being invited to design projects in Berlin and The Hague in the following decade. In many aspects, São Victor represents an ethically and politically-minded architectural practice, with a stress on understanding the link between being responsive to the voice of the people and the permanence of architectural design. (The SAAL Process, Housing in Portugal 1974–76) Álvaro Siza worked for SAAL/North with Adalberto Dias, Domingos Tavares, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Francisco Guedes, Graça Nieto, Manuel Borges, Manuela Sambade, Paula Cabral and the residents' association S. Victor, that was founded on April 14th, 1975. The first phase of the project included 32 dwellings and the second, 20 dwellings. The operation began in November 1974, with a construction date in October 1975. This project series contains reproductions of design development drawings, exhibition panels and photographs. The original material was produced around 1974-1975 and were reproduced in 2015 for the exhibit.

AP154.S1.1967.PR01
Description:
The Twin Parks, Bronx, New York, N.Y. (1967) project series documents the participation of Giovanni Pasanella in the development and execution of housing projects in the Twin Parks West and Twin Parks East areas of the Bronx. In 1967, Giovanni Pasanella collaborated with Jonathan Barnett, Jaquelin Robertson, Richard Weinstein and Myles Weintraub on the "Twin Parks Study". The researchers identified underused sites that could be developed and buildings that could be rehabilitated in the East Tremont area. A plan focussing on two areas--Twin Parks West and Twin Parks East--was developed in collobaration with a group of local religious organizations called the Twin Parks Association. Between 1970 and 1973 a number of sites in the Twin Parks area were developed by different government agencies and designed by different architects. Giovanni Pasanella was selected to design Sites 8, 5-7, 10-12 and 6 in Twin Parks West for the New York State Urban Development Corporation (UDC). He was also chosen to design housing for Site 1-2 of Twin Parks West for the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), and he was selected as architect for Twin Parks East--a project composed of housing and a school--developed by the New York City Educational Construction Fund. The project series is arranged in four subseries. The documents related to the Twin Parks Study constitute the first subseries. A second subseries is related to the drawings for the built works in Twin Parks West that were designed for the UDC. Drawings for the apartment building designed for the NYCHA constitute the third subseries and the drawings for Twin Parks East constitute the fourth subseries.
