Summary:
Between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, Americans underwent a dramatic transformation in self-conception: having formerly lived as individuals or members of small communities, they now found themselves living in networks, which arose out of scientific and technological innovations. Previous histories of this era focus on alienation and dislocation that new technologies caused. This book shows that American individuals in this era were more connected to their fellow citizens than everbut by bonds that were distinctly modern.

Summary:
While the history of modernism in the United States is often seen as having roots in French art moderne, Jewel Stern and Christopher Long instead argue that Central European émigré designers had an outsized impact on the formation of a uniquely American modernism. The Vanguard examines the lives and careers of nearly fifty designers from Austria, Germany, and Hungary—including Paul T. Frankl, Ilonka Karasz, Winold Reiss, and Joseph Urban—who contributed to the early rise of modernism in America. From 1910 to 1940, these figures played a vital role in bringing to the fore the discussion of modernism and contributed to its ascendancy through their designs, writings, and exhibitions. Stern and Long reveal how this modernism reflected distinct American realities and tell a comprehensive new story of modernism’s émigré roots.

Summary:
Once the province of film and media scholars, today the moving image is of broad concern to historians of art and architecture and designers of everything from websites to cities. As museums and galleries devote increasing space to video installations which no longer presuppose a fixed viewer, urban space becomes envisioned and planned through "fly throughs," and technologies such as GPS add data to the experience of travel, moving images have captured the attention of geographers and scholars across the humanities and social sciences. Their practice of "mobility studies" is remaking how we understand a contemporary world in relentless motion. Media theorist and historian Anne Friedberg (1952-2009) was among the first practitioners of visual studies to theorize the experience of vision in motion. Her books have become key points of reference in the discussion of the windows that frame images and the viewers in motion who perceive them. Although widely influential beyond her own discipline, Friedberg's work has never been the subject of an extended study. "The Moving Eye" gathers together essays by renowned thinkers in media studies, art history, architecture, and museum studies to consider the rich implications of her work for understanding film and video, new media, visual art, architecture, exhibition design, urban space, and virtual reality.
