AP207.S1.1991.PR02
Description:
The project series documents Pettena's work for the Nuovo Municipio, a new town hall building in Canazei in Italy, from 1990 to 1997. The project consisted of preserving and restoring a historic building designed by Ettore Sottsass in the 1930s and adding a new construction built in a gap between two sections of the building the two volumes of the building. "Through the glazed connection, the new volume maintains a certain distance from the existing volume and is itself split into two parts, creating in practice a pedestrian intersection between the new and the old building and between the two sections of the new building: a pedestrian intersection that is laid out on two distinct levels." [1] The project series contains sketches, site plans, floor plans, elevations and sections. It is also comprised of research material, such as copies of building plans by Ettore Sottsass Sr. The project is also documented through proposals and project descriptions, reports, contracts with the city of Canazei, correspondence with engineers, photographs of the construction, and videos of the building. The project series also includes press clippings about the project and an unidentified videorecording. Description:
The project series documents "Complimenti D'Architettura", an installation for the Biennale di Venezia at the Magazzini del Sale in 1978. The installation consists of a stone wall that showcases the different types of stone used as construction material over time, begining with uncut natural stone and ending with cut polished stone. "It is a symbolic history of architecture [...]: all the intermediate phases, from the collection of scattered pieces of rock, piled up to make a heap, to the hewn and polished stone, its surface as shiny as a mirror." [1] The installation was also presented at the exhibition "La fine del mondo" at the Centro Pecci per l'Arte Contemporanea in Prato, in 2016. The project series contains photographs of the first edition of the installation at the Biennale di Venezia, and installation sketches. It also contains two photographs of the second edition at the Centro Pecci per l'Arte Contemporanea. Description:
This project series documents Pettena's installation entitled "Grazia & Giustizia", named after the Ministry of Justice in Italy. This project is the third of a series of three installations created in 1968 which consisted of large three-dimensional letters, forming words, and made purposely of perishable materials. The "Grazia & Giustizia" was created and constructed in the context of the 6th Festival of Avant-Garde Music in Palermo, in 1968. Unlike the first two installations in this series, this one was destroyed intentionally and was more of a performance as each cardboard letter was taken and thrown in the sea after a funeral procession accompanied by music played by the group MEV (Musica Elettronica Viva). The installation was re-created in 2012, this time in Civitella del Tronto, at "a great fort dating from the 16th century, which was not only the dominant architectural feature in that context but in particular the place where 'justice' used to be dispensed (or not)." [1] The project series contains photographs of the procession and of the letters once in the sea, and two drawings, including one showing the letters floating in the water. The project series also contains photographs showing the installation at the fort of Civitella del Tronto in 2012 and project descriptions in English and Italian. Description:
The project series documents Pettena's research and study for the restoration and conversion of the Tonnara dell’Enfola, the promontory of the Enfola in Portoferraio, Italy. The project, on which Pettena worked from 1995 to 2000, was commissioned by the Parco Nazionale of the Arcipelago Toscano. The project included the restoration and conversion of the 18th century former tuna factory building into a museum and a theme park. The project was not realized as the general plan for the project is yet to be defined. The project series contains a complete set of plans for Pettena's proposal, including site plans, elevations, sections and floor plans, and a report on the project. The project series also includes contracts, cost estimates, project descriptions, handwritten notes (possibly by Pettena), correspondence and a list of work for the project. It also contains research material such as reference photographs and a set of reference plans for the building.

Poiesis [Poetry] (2018)
AP207.S1.2018.PR04
Description:
The project series documents the installation "Poiesis" designed by Pettena and presented at the 2018 Biennale Gherdeina in Ortisei. The installation consists of sheets of corrugated cardboard and metal stays assembled to create three-dimensional letters that form the word "Poiesis". The project refers to Pettena's 1970s trilogy (Carabinieri, Milite Ignoto, and Grazia & Giustizia) of words constructed deliberately out of perishable material. The project series contains photographs of the installation, a video and a plan of the cardboard letters.

AP207.S3
Description:
The series documents Pettena’s activities as a writer and a critic of contemporary architecture from 1973 to the end of the 2010s. The series documents only a few of the many articles, essays, monographs, and book chapters written by Pettena. The series contains materials for two of Pettena’s writings about Ettore Sottsass and Ettore Sottsass Jr’s work written at the end of the 1990s and early 2000s, and a monograph on steel structure in contemporary architecture. This predominantly consists of research materials, draft texts, and documents related to the image selection process for three publications: “Il linguaggio dell'acciaio" (1992), “Sottsass Associati 1980-1999 frammenti” (1999), and "Sottsass e Sottsass" (2001). The series also contains scans of two earlier books by Pettena: “L’anarchitetto” (1973) and “La citta' invisibile. Architettura sperimentale 1965/75” (1983), and of a later one “Vienna e dintorni. Abraham, Hollein, Peintner, Pettena, Pichler, Sottsass" (2013). The series also documents publications and articles written on Pettena’s work. This material mainly consists of scans of articles and pages from publications, as well as some texts. Finally, the series contains material related to the development of Pettena’s professional website, such as texts and image selection.
