Description:
This project series documents a feasibility study for the new National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario from 1980-1982. The office identified the project number as 8011. In 1977, Parkin Architects Planners won a limited architectural competition for their design of the new National Gallery of Canada. The selected site for the competition, next to the Ottawa River, was controversial due to its uneven ground and lack of access to main streets in Ottawa. This project consisted of a feasibility study to use the existing Memorial Buildings in Ottawa as the site of the new National Gallery of Canada. These buildings, originally built in 1954 as federal offices, were between 4-6 storeys with 70,000 square feet of space, excluding parking levels. The project is recorded through drawings, photographs and textual records dating from 1980-1982. The majority of the drawings are reprographic copies of building sections, floor plans and area calculations. The textual records include correspondence, conference reports, interoffice letters, financial records and the feasibility report and design scheme documentation.

Description:
This project series documents studies for the medical clinic building at the Etobicoke General Hospital site in Etobicoke, Ontario from 1972-1973. The office identified the project number as 7219. At the same time that Parkin Architects Planners was constructing the Etobicoke General Hospital, they began working on this project, an adjacent medical clinic that would be attached to the hospital via tunnel. This project proposed an 80 suite medical centre to be built to the south-west of the hospital. However, eventually the location of the building was moved and the project was given a new project number by the office. The building was eventually constructed under the new project number which is also documented in this fonds (see project series AP018.S1.1974.PR22 for these records). The project is recorded through drawings and textual records dating from 1972-1973. The majority of drawings are reprographic copies that show site plans, parking studies, floor plans and elevations. Textual records include questionnaires administered to the tenants (doctors and medical departments) regarding their unique office needs.

Description:
This project series documents the Plano de Expansão da Cidade de Macau (Areia P. e Porto E.) in Macau, China. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 16/80. The office assigned the date 1982 to this project. Macau is a Chinese-Portuguese peninsula near the Pear River Delta on the south coast of China. After 1950, the speedy industrial growth caused massive waves of immigration and created housing problems. Macau's governement wanted to reorganize the urban landscape in order to readapt the territory to the economic and political realities. Siza was hired by the P&T Group as part of a team of specialist-consultants to rethink the districts of Areia Preta and Porto Exterior. A first proposal was submitted in 1984. The proposed plans were accepted by the authorities years later, but never realized due to the construction of hotels and casinos instead of housing. Documenting this project are studies, plans and project site plans. Textual materials include project documentation and correspondence. Photographic materials document the models and project site. These materials date from 1981-2012.

Description:
This project series documents a proposal for Palmerston Place in Scarborough, Ontario from 1989-1992. The office identified the project number as 8909. This project, commissioned by Frum Development Group and headed by Bruce Kuwabara, proposed a mixed-use development that would span several blocks and integrate local transit stations. Located at the corner of Markham Road and Sheppard Avenue, the development would include residential areas, retail spaces, office buildings, a bus station and a subway station. The project investigated several schemes, all of which included the creation of a new grid road system, parks, courtyards and extensive landscaping. The development was divided into several phases to be carried out over a five to seven year period. This project was never built. The project is recorded through drawings, a site photograph and textual records dating from 1989-1991. The drawings are mostly originals and include sketches, model drawings, presentation drawings, plans, elevations and sections. A large number of the plans are schemes that investigate the general site concept. The textual records consist of a description of the project concept.

Description:
This project series documents a feasibility study for Imperial Oil Limited in North York, Ontario in 1977. The office identified the project number as 7701. This project consisted of a study to determine the feasibility of expanding the Imperial Oil Limited building located the corner of Don Mills Road and Eglington Avenue. The original award-winning building was designed and built by the firm of John B. Parkin Associated from 1960-1962 and used as the Ontario region office. This study looked at different site schemes including an addition to the existing building or the possibility of constructing a separate building or buildings. Each scheme investigated different building heights and locations on the property but all were divided into 2 phases of construction. The study also looked into the possibility of adding a large, multi-storey parking garage to the property. The project is recorded through drawings dating from1976-1977. The drawings are roughly half originals and half reprographic copies, the majority of which are site plans. Also included is an area plan of the region prepared by the North York Planning Board.

Description:
This project series documents Cornelia Hahn Oberlander's landscape design for the Mill Creek Public Housing Complex between 40th Street, Aspen Street, and Fairmount Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Oberlander worked on this project in the early 1950s as Dan Kiley's associate. They both were consulting for Louis Kahn's office, Kahn, McAllister, Braik, & Day. The first phase of the project consisted of a complex of three seventeen-storey apartment towers accomodating 218 units on a four-acre site. The landscape design consisted of a system of pedestrian areas to connect the site with the city, including a central alley linking Fairmount Avenue to a common green space. Trees to provide shade were planted around the parking spaces and the housing towers. The project was completed in 1954, but most of the landscaping by Kiley and Oberlander was never realized. The Mill Creek complex was demolished in 2002 to make space for the new low-rise public housing development. The project series contains only two reprographic copies of landscape plans.
