Project
AP018.S1.1978.PR05
Description:
This project series documents the Ontario Congress and Trade Centre in Toronto from 1978-1980. The office identified the project number as 7807. This project consisted of the investigation of building a congress and trade centre on Front Street West. The project proposed a 519,500 square foot building with a 200,000 square foot exhibition hall that could be divided for smaller events. The building would also contain a multiuse hall, theatres, meeting rooms, offices, food and beverage facilities, and a 1300 car parking area. The project was proposed to cost around $73 million. The project is also referred to as the Toronto Convention Centre or Ontario Convention Centre. The majority of the textual documentation shows the controversial debate over whether the centre should be built, including numerous press clippings that highlight the issue. It should be noted that Congress Centre and Convention Centre are used interchangeably in the materials. Eventually, this project contract was given to another architectural firm and today is known as the Metropolitan Toronto Convention Centre. The project is recorded through drawings and textual records dating from 1976-1981. The drawings largely show designs for the proposed building and site plans. The textual records include correspondence, meeting minutes, interoffice memos, project proposals, feasibility reports, press clippings on the project and on other convention centres, research documentation on other convention centres, documentation on a proposed hotel to be built on the centre and promotional materials.

AP178.S1.1998.PR03
Description:
This project series documents the Edifício Zaida Habitação e Comércio in Granada, Spain. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 98/90. The office assigned the dates 1998-2006 to this project. The project was divided in three components, each represented in the following project subseries: the Zaida building (AP178.S1.1998.PR03.SS1), the Caja Rural de Granada (AP178.S1.1998.PR03.SS2) and the Casa Pátio (AP178.S1.1998.PR03.SS3). The project, realized with local architect Juan Domingo Santos, redeveloped three ajacent parcels of land that faced the Plaza Puerta Real. This included the demolition of the nineteenth century Zaida Hotel that existed on the site and the incorporation of an existing nineteenth century courtyard style home (Casa Pátio). The project was built in two phases, beginning with the Zaida building in phase 1 and continuing with the Casa Pátio in phase 2. The Zaida building was six-storeys with commerical and office spaces on the first three levels and residential dwellings on the upper three. The two bottom floors of the building's exterior were constructed from grey stone, while the top four storeys were white stucco. The bank branch Caja Rural de Granada was located on the ground level of the building. While the architect sought to save and preserve the Casa Pátio, eventually it had to be reinterpretted and attached to the main volume. It was integrated with the main building using the same white stucco exterior.

Description:
This project series documents the Plano de Expansão da Cidade de Macau (Areia P. e Porto E.) in Macau, China. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 16/80. The office assigned the date 1982 to this project. Macau is a Chinese-Portuguese peninsula near the Pear River Delta on the south coast of China. After 1950, the speedy industrial growth caused massive waves of immigration and created housing problems. Macau's governement wanted to reorganize the urban landscape in order to readapt the territory to the economic and political realities. Siza was hired by the P&T Group as part of a team of specialist-consultants to rethink the districts of Areia Preta and Porto Exterior. A first proposal was submitted in 1984. The proposed plans were accepted by the authorities years later, but never realized due to the construction of hotels and casinos instead of housing. Documenting this project are studies, plans and project site plans. Textual materials include project documentation and correspondence. Photographic materials document the models and project site. These materials date from 1981-2012.
