Summary:
Veruska Vasconez is a Brazilian architect and academic whose work spans practice, research, and teaching. This volume gathers seventeen voices – architects, historians, practitioners – who illuminate how housing, design, and infrastructure act as mediators for the most urgent challenges of our time. These essays are not isolated reflections but rather interwoven inquiries into architecture’s capacity as a form of social imagination, a vehicle for justice, and a medium for re-envisioning urban futures. The collection emerges from the graduate seminar Housing, Infrastructure, and Transportation at the University of Miami, originally developed by architect Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk.

Summary:
Architectural photographer Juan Rodríguez brings his keen eye and perceptive sense of form, mass, and light to this extensive series of photographs featuring the architecture of Manuel Aires Mateus. In documenting work by this famed Portuguese architect, which has a strongly sculptural nature, Rodríguez has opted for the stark contrasts and dramatic lighting effects of black-and-white film. The buildings with their geometric shapes are usually white, possessing characteristic clean lines and bold volumes that stand out dramatically in their respective contexts, whether a natural landscape or urban setting.

Summary:
In The Possibility of an Absolute Architecture, Pier Vittorio Aureli proposes that a sharpened formal consciousness in architecture is a precondition for political, cultural, and social engagement with the city. Aureli revisits the work of four architects whose projects were advanced through the making of architectural form but whose concern was the city at large: Andrea Palladio, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Etienne-Louis Boullée, and Oswald Mathias Ungers. The work of these architects, Aureli argues, addressed the transformations of the modern city and its urban implications through the elaboration of specific and strategic architectural forms.

The city of Mumbai in India is undergoing dramatic transformations and the forces driving these changes in the city are forcing new modes of urbanism and urbanization to be realised. In particular, social, economic and political forces are aggressively pushing the evolution of an urban form in which local architects and planners are struggling to qualitatively intervene. This collection of essays and writings examine both the status quo in current developments while exploring stimulating projects that are emerging on the margins that provide hope for future directions of urbanisation in the city.

Summary:
This book chronicles the third academic year of the studio led by Kersten Geers, Jelena Pancevac, Guido Tesio and Fabrizio Ballabio at the Academy of Architecture USI in Mendrisio. Stemming from the idea of ‘large form’ and the built environment as a testament to the futility of the virtual one, this body of work investigates how the model of grand ensembles can perform in urban fringes (in Milan), and what to do with the existing obsolete office space in the urban centre (in Brussels). Our unlikely guide to the contemporary idea of sustainable living and working in the city was the work of Aldo and Hannie van Eyck, which would grow into a separate book itself (Excess of Architecture). Brussels also served as a testbed for establishing a relation between the production of culture and the instrumental role of architecture within that process.

Summary:
Catalogue of the exhibition ''Sixteen Chinese Museums. Fifteen Chinese Architects''.The exhibition reflects on the role museums play as motors of progress within the socio-political and cultural landscape in China today. It simultaneously presents and enquires into this role, and the associated tasks and aims of museums and cultural spaces, against the backdrop of the global, digital, urban and demographic challenges of the 21st Century, as well as the more locally-specific concerns of heritage and identity. Taking each of sixteen museums as case studies, the exhibition focuses on a set of crucial questions. How is local and national identity defined by the museum design and curation? How does the museum function within the context of its local social and urban environment? Which form or shape was identified as being most suitable for the museum’s function and its context?
