Description:
This project series documents the Kolonihaven - Exposição ao ar livre in Copenhagen, Denmark. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 73/90 The office assigned the date 1996 to this project. At the end of the 19th century, there was an important migration of people from the rural areas to the cities in Denmark. Some migrants missed the contact with the soil and decided to built small houses with gardens to help them to adapt to their new urban life. These small Danish houses we're later named Kolonihavehus and became emblematic in Denmark. The exhibition Kolonihaven - The International challenge was held in Copenhagen by the Arken Museum of Modern Art. Fourteen international architects, including Álvaro Siza, Aldo Rossi, Mario Botta, Michael Graves, Arata Isozaki, and Leon Krier were invited to design a 7.5 square meter Danish house. Siza's design was based on his idea of a house as a child mixed with his memories of a trip to Scandinavia. The fourteen architects also participated in the exhibition "Major Projects" at the Køge Museum, in Køge, Danmark. The exhibition focused on the sketches and preliminary drawings of majort projects by each architect. Documenting this project are sketches and documentation.

Description:
This project series documents the Providence Healthcare Centre in Scarborough, Ontario from 1995-2000. The office identified the project number as 9504. This project, headed by Marianne McKenna in joint-venture with Montgomery and Sisam Architects, consisted of a long-term care facility on the Healthcare Centre campus located at the corner of St. Clair East and Warden Avenues. The facility diverged from the traditional institutional model to house 288 residents in a more residential setting. Bay windows, porches and chimneys were borrowed from residential architecture to contribute to this effect. The "houses," accommodating 18 residents each, were four-storeys high and arranged in two L-shaped wings with landscaped gardens in their interior courtyards. A double-height Great Hall joined the two volumes at the building's centre, which was built to house a variety of social and recreational activities for the residents. A chapel, hair salon, café and general store were also included. The project was also known as the Cardinal Ambrozic Houses of Providence. The project is recorded through drawings and presentation watercolour paintings dating from 1995-1999. The drawings are mostly originals and include a large number of sketches along with presentation renderings, plans, elevations, sections, perspectives and details.

Description:
File documents the partially executed project for the Restricted International Competition "South Friedrichstadt as a Place to Live and Work," West Berlin (now Berlin), West Germany (now in Germany). Material in this file was produced between 1980 and 1988. File documents the design for one of four urban blocks in the area of the Kochstrasse and Friedrichstrasse, Berlin. The competition required the preservation of three existing structures and the construction of mixed-used buildings on vacant lots. The architect develops an overall strategy to occupy the urban block by extending the geometry of the three existing buildings onto the site (DR1991:0018:002; DR1991:0018:004-006), on which he overlays what he calls the "Mercator grid", an orthogonal grid oriented according to the compass (DR1991:0018:016). The "el structures" used by Eisenman in House X, House 11a, and the Cannaregio project reappear in plan, and later as forms emerging from the square compartments delimited by the "Mercator grid", this time developed three-dimensionally (House X, 1975-1977, DR1994:0138:001-1546; House 11a, 1978, DR1994:0139:001-303; Cannaregio project, 1978, DR1991:0017:001-094). After finalizing the urban concept, Eisenman concentrates his efforts on the planning of individual buildings, developing the massing of the building facing Kochstrasse in a series of axonometrics (DR1991:0018:088-092), sections (DR1991:0018:088) and facade studies (DR1991:0018:204-210). A series of scrolled drawings study the L-shaped elements and thin slabs with characteristically gridded surfaces found in House X (DR1991:0018:204 and DR1991:0018:209-210). File contains record drawings, conceptual drawings, design development drawings, schematic drawings, competition drawings, presentation drawings, photographic material, and textual records.
