Summary:
From 1972 to 1973, Gordon Matta-Clark took over fifteen hundred photographs of gra?ti in New York City. These pictures are some of the earliest documentation of an emerging art form, and are an under-recognized body of work from Matta-Clark—an artist who used the city’s crumbling infrastructure to reveal the social and political implications of architecture and urban design. This publication features every frame from every roll of film Matta-Clark shot, organized according to the sequence of contact sheets in the artist’s archive. Taken together, these pictures demonstrate Matta-Clark’s obsession with the gra?ti that had exploded across the city’s walls, subways, and buses, and show him growing bolder as he moved from photographing on the streets and subway platforms, to trespassing in outer borough train yards.

Summary:
In a period of over thirty years, Arne van Herk and Sabien de Kleijn have achieved a varied and unconventional body of work. It consists of architecture, urban design, interior design, furniture, household objects, films and experiments in form and material. This book notes the ingenious skylights in their houseboat as well as the houses on Borneokade Amsterdam. It gives due attention to the foam-rubber objects, the fifty-centimetre high platform shoes, the Woutertje Pieterse School in Leiden and the accommodation building for the Dutch Royal Navy in Den Helder. The architects' working method and their projects are explored in an essay by Hans Ibelings. Adriaan Geuze and Cilia Erens present individual outlooks on the work of Van Herk & De Kleijn. Designed by Karel Martens and Aagje Martens.

Summary:
The murals, computer images, paper works, drawings and objects of Berlin-based Michael Hakimi are combined in site-specific installations to form intricate networks of meaning. Hakimi expands the function of his formally reduced, two-dimensional images by means of his interventions, emphasizing the semantic divide between object and sign. The artist examines the narrative potential of symbols and basic geometric shapes through the collagelike interaction of his works with readymades of the simplest materials. His installation "Large Oven" (2004), for example, realized for the Kunstverein Hamburg, and the spatial project "Roof" (2007), produced for the Kunsthalle Basel, both of which are comprehensively documented for the first time in the present publication, create walk-in scenarios reflecting social, political and urban realities. Beyond these works, this retrospective monograph presents all of Hakimi's work since 2002.

Summary:
Museums are flourishing across the globe: in recent decades, no other architectural form has witnessed such remarkable growth and diversification. In an era when the digital revolution enables us to preserve our shared memory and artistic heritage without the constraints of physical space, this phenomenon might seem like an unnecessary indulgence. Yet, by examining new icons and rereading historical examples"Architecture for Culture" shows why museums remain essential. They serve as the repositories for the encyclopedia of 21st-century knowledge, help make our cities legible and ensure that art remains a vibrant presence in the spaces where we live. The museum is revealed as a venue where architecture refines its discourse on method, identity, and urban context; it is also a dynamic laboratory for the continuous development of a new cultural policy—one that must address itself to a planetary audience.

Summary:
This publication looks at Fez, Morocco's famous former capital and today its second-largest city. Based on a recent research program conducted by EPFL's Laboratory Basel (laba), it investigates how these clashes have marked the city's socioeconomic structure and urban fabric, and whether or not it offers alternative and relevant means of human association and community. Given the growing stream of large-scale international investment, the constant enticement of tourism, and a worldwide revival of nationalism, Laba's student's and researchers were looking for tiny cues, nagging doubts, and signs of the fusion between form and life, raising questions about identity, authenticity, tradition, the globalisation of culture, and the use of local resources. Their findings are visualised in the book in striking images, graphics and maps. Students' proposals for architectural interventions addressing these issues are presented through images and plans.

Summary:
There is scarcely any construction principle that can boast an equally extensive array of positive effects than the greening of the exterior and interior building envelope. "Green, greener, greenest : façades, roofs, indoors offers a comprehensive survey of a range of façade, roof and interior greenings. Here, it is plants that are the main building material: neatly arranged, they complement minimalist high-rise architecture; wildly rampant, they serve as an extravagant element of interior design; and through creative composition, they come to form a sophisticated work of art. The cross-disciplinary juxtaposition of technological progress and creative design is never far from view. Whether in an urban setting or part of a natural landscape, the projects showcased in this volume prove that there is still limitless creative potential in architectural greening, posing new and exciting challenges for designers and landscape architects alike.

Summary:
Published twice a year, the Netherlands Architecture Institute's house journal "Architecture Bulletin" presents essays (in word and image) on the built environment of today, yesterday and tomorrow-subjective arguments complemented by personal reflection, but always emphasizing the essay as an appropriate form for the consideration of architecture. These essays originate from design disciplines such as architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture, or from architecture historians, philosophers, artists and sociologists. "Architecture Bulletin" is about the ways that we arrive at judgments about architecture, whether we encounter them through the media or streamlined in a scale model. It is also about the ways in which architecture can imbue our identities and behaviors with meaning, in metropolises like Hong Kong, postcolonial nations like Indonesia or at home, wherever that may be. These essays are about every aspect of architecture's impact in our world today.

Summary:
The collection of architectural design projects included provides an overview of philosophical theories that focus on what appears to be real, presenting a range of methodologies and a set of tools for addressing this discourse. The contents have been divided into 5 sections, each chapter developing a design criteria process involving one of the following areas in philosophy: hyperreality and simulacra within postmodern philosophy, drawing on Jean Baudrillard; semiology and the authority of form; complexity and noumenon/non-Euclidean geometry; the exhausted confines of structuralist theory according to Roland Barthes; and lastly authenticity, with the aim to describe how we perceive reality and the urban fabric. Incorporating the ontological potential of space into a design process and part of a set of design criteria will help develop an understanding of the conditions under which forms and design criteria are generated.

Summary:
Landscape architecture is a unique discipline where art, nature and the city converge and enter into an exciting dialogue. In the USA, the country of vast open plains and spacious towns, the great tradition of life in confrontation with nature plays an equally important role in landscape architecture as the acute problems of the built environment or social problems within the community. Design methods and practise in landscape architecture form the focus of this book, complemented by an analysis of the theoretical aspects of the subject. Perceptive portraits of 13 offices span the whole breadth of landscape design, from the post-ecological utopia of Michael Sorkin (New York/Vienna) to the urban pragmatism of the Roma Design group (San Francisco), from the ecological approach of the Philadelphia group Andropogon, also active in Japan, to the minimalist landscape art of Kathryn Gustafson (Seattle/London/Paris).
