Summary:
Over the last 50 years, Lebanese American artist Simone Fattal's (born 1942) multifaceted practice has explored the impact of displacement as well as the episteme of archeology and mythology, drawing from a range of sources including war narratives, landscape painting, ancient history and poetry. Inspired by her visit to the archeological sites of Pompeii, Fattal debuts a new body of sculpture and ceramics blending history with memory, grappling with the loss of time while revealing its repetitions. Says Fattal of Pompeii's significance, "the place has not been destroyed by time, but by a moment ... there are fragments of all periods mingled together ... Egypt is present, but also Syria and Asia Minor. But with all this diversity and differences, it seems that all lived together in harmony."

Plywood is arguably the most modern design artifact: it is a material born of natural wood and formed by vigorous industrial processes that can assume the most organic of shapes through bending, laminating, and molding. This book consists of two parts: the first, an illustrated history of plywood (tracing its origins to ancient Egypt, circa 2900 BC); the second, an(...)

Summary:
Plywood is arguably the most modern design artifact: it is a material born of natural wood and formed by vigorous industrial processes that can assume the most organic of shapes through bending, laminating, and molding. This book consists of two parts: the first, an illustrated history of plywood (tracing its origins to ancient Egypt, circa 2900 BC); the second, an annotated journal of the making of a piece of bent plywood furniture, from the forest to the showroom. "Bent Ply" contains numerous illustrations of the classics of bent ply design, including furniture from Alvar Aalto, Michael Thonet, and Charles and Ray Eames, and examples of its appropriation by the military: John F. Kennedy's PT109 boat and the DeHavilland "Mosquito" were both fabricated from plywood.

In Christopher Dresser's own words, "I have prepared this Work with the hope of assisting to bring about a better style of decorations for our houses. My book is intended to help the decorator and to enable those who live in decorated houses to judge, to an extent, the merit of the ornament around them." Indeed, in this reprint of the classic "Studies in Design", the(...)

In Christopher Dresser's own words, "I have prepared this Work with the hope of assisting to bring about a better style of decorations for our houses. My book is intended to help the decorator and to enable those who live in decorated houses to judge, to an extent, the merit of the ornament around them." Indeed, in this reprint of the classic "Studies in Design", the timeless designs and wisdom of Christopher Dresser are reintroduced. Originally published in 1875, "Studies in Design" features Dresser's exquisite design and classic theories that have enduring appeal. Dresser's designs, which later influenced other artisans such as William Morris and Charles Tiffany, reveal exotic influences from such locations as Egypt, Japan, China, India, and Morocco.

The study of historic preservation theory in the United States has been limited by the lack of a comprehensive anthology of literature spanning the history of thought in the discipline. Summary:
The study of historic preservation theory in the United States has been limited by the lack of a comprehensive anthology of literature spanning the history of thought in the discipline. While a few key texts such as Viollet-le-Duc's "On Restoration" (1854) and John Ruskin's "Lamp of Memory" (1849) have been reprinted ad infinitum, the enormous body of preservation knowledge produced since the Renaissance remains obscure to most American students, who until now have had no easy way to access it. This anthology offers classic texts from the United States, China, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Czech Republic, Spain, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, and more, offering a broad introduction to the history of preservation theory.

Summary:
This book examines the architectural tradition which developed with the religious culture of Islam. Essentially heir to the Roman development of space, it had its source in the ubiquitous courtyard house, while the development of the mosque as both place of worship and the centre of the community, it forms a response to the requirements of prayer set out in the Koran, was given a range of forms as the conquests of Islam came up against the traditions of Egypt, Persia, India and China. The tradition developed further in tombs, palaces and fortifications, all of which are described and illustrated here. The architecture of "Islam" encompasses a high proportion of the world's most beautiful buildings. This book covers the whole range in unprecedented breadth and depth.
