Summary:
This new monograph delves into an exciting selection of esteemed works by Delhi-based firm Morphogenesis, one of the most productive and creative architectural firms in India and a world-leader in zero net energy and sustainable design. This richly illustrated book combines stunning imagery with a comprehensive study outlining the firms strong philosophical design intent across a vast range of typologies: residential; institutional; commercial; hospitality; offices; houses; interiors; public and master planning. Morphogenesis reinterprets India's architectural roots and consistently employs passive environmental solutions for a unique, contextual contemporary language. The Morphogenesis journey is a reflection of the contemporary Indian perspective within the global context, incorporating its inspired, forward-thinking vision while respectfully referencing the spirit of traditional Indian subcontinental architecture, and all the while maintaining an intimate focus on the environmental context and culture of the project. This spectacularly beautiful volume is a strong addition to IMAGES' collection of the renowned Master Architect Series and a superb example of an engaged, highly principled and vibrant emerging architectural practice in Asia that is defining a global architectural brand for countries that share similar extraordinary levels of diversity in climate, scale, economy, and typology as is seen across the subcontinent.

The Japanese architect Takaharu Tezuka caused a stir in 2015 with his TEDtalk “The best kindergarten you’ve ever seen”. As the first text-focused publication, Tezuka Architects: "The yellow book" now provides an insight into the design philosophy of the internationally renowned architecture firm. Based on a lecture by Tezuka at Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD), this “pocket guide” in scale and feel introduces the architects’ way of thinking, using examples of seminal projects in recent years. Buildings such as the Roof House (2001), the Child Chemo House (2013), or the Fuji Kindergarten (2007) illustrate the powerful impact of Takaharu and Yui Tezuka’s design and show how architecture can contribute actively to building a better society.

Danish-Norwegian artist Karen Bit Vejle uses scissors as her brush to create intricate and awe-inspiring works of art with cut paper. The art of psaligraphy hit Europe with the wave of Eastern influence in the 17th century, and famed Danish author Hans Christian Anderson was among its practitioners. The tradition of paper-cutting is particularly strong in Scandinavia, where gaekkebrev, cards with cut-paper snowflakes, are still exchanged by sweethearts each spring, and Bit Vejle has worked to master the medium since she was a young girl. The past couple of years have seen her work grow in scale and sophistication, creating both abstracted floral patterns and enormous narrative tableaux as delicate as lace.

Summary:
Using materials such as earth, wind, water, fire, wood, salt, rocks, mirrors and explosives, American artists of the 1960s began to move beyond the white cube gallery space to work directly in the land. With ties to Minimal and Conceptual art, these artists placed less emphasis on the discrete object and turned their attention to the experience of the artwork—however fleeting or permanent that might be—foregrounding natural materials and the site itself to create large-scale works located outside of typical urban art-world circuits. Histories of Land art have long been dominated by men, but "Groundswell: Women of Land Art" shifts that focus to shed new light on the vast number of earthworks by women artists. While their careers ran parallel to those of their better-known male counterparts, they have received less recognition and representation in museum presentations—until now. This book includes five scholarly essays, as well as a detailed chronology, exhibition checklist and illustrated biographies of exhibition artists. "Groundswell" is a resource for readers interested in understanding the historical Land art movement and our own relationship to the earth.

In the years 1984–1996, SOM continued to develop the skills for which it had become known—high standards of design, imaginative structural solutions, exceptional detailing, city making on a grand scale, expertise in managing large and complex sites—and also addressed new areas of design and practice. A contextual modernism—one attentive to climate, topography, and the regional vernacular—a focus on restoration and reuse, and an expansion of international work came to the fore in a time of great social and economic change. In his introduction, Detlef Mertins traces the firm’s history in parallel with this restructuring, a growth in real estate development and financial markets that fundamentally changed how buildings were commissioned and built.

Summary:
The world's growing vulnerability to planet-sized risks invites action on a global scale. The World as an Architectural Project shows how for more than a century architects have imagined the future of the planet through world-scale projects. With fifty speculative projects by Patrick Geddes, Alison and Peter Smithson, Kiyonori Kikutake, Saverio Muratori, Takis Zenetos, Sergio Bernardes, Juan Navarro Baldeweg, Luc Deleu, and many others, documented in text and images, this ambitious and wide-ranging book is the first compilation of its kind. Interestingly, architects begin to address the world as a project long before the advent of contemporary globalism and its assorted anxieties. The Spanish urban theorist and entrepreneur Arturo Soria y Mata, for example, in 1882 envisions a system that connects the entire planet in a linear urban network. In 1927, Buckminster Fuller's “World Town Plan—4D Tower” proposes to solve global housing problems with mobile structures delivered and installed by a Zeppelin. And Joyce Hsiang and Bimal Mendis visualize the conditions of a worldwide “City of Seven Billion” in a 2015–2019 project. Rather than indulging the cliché of the megalomaniac architect, this volume presents a discipline reflecting on its own responsibilities.

Summary:
Prefabrication cannot be ignored, for it challenges the most traditional values of architecture. Architects may have neglected this area of practical construction, but they have much to learn from pattern-book houses, modular structures, Portakabins and mobile homes. The Prefabricated Home examines how the relationship between architecture and industrialized building has now become an urgent issue for architects.Colin Davies traces the history of prefabricated buildings from small-scale ‘prefabs’ to the precast concrete mass housing of the 1960s to the present-day revival of interest in ‘volumetric’ modular buildings, and assesses their architectural implications. He looks at what is happening today in factories and on building sites worldwide, and contrasts the aesthetic concerns of architects with the economic ones of industrialized building manufacturers. He argues that the involvement of architects in industrialized building can produce an exciting new type of architecture that is humane, liberating and environmentally friendly. The Prefabricated Home is a revealing and instructive book that will appeal to anyone interested in architecture and concerned with the future of housing.
