Summary:
The great Italian architect, designer, theorist and printmaker Aldo Rossi (1931–97) galvanized the postmodernist architectural movement in the middle of the 20th century with his unique synthesis of influences such as Adolf Loos, Giorgio de Chirico and Soviet architecture. From his publication Architecture of the City (1966) to his 1976 exhibition Analogous City, Rossi spent a decade developing a theory of urban design that focused on the “collective memory” of a city as an essential element of its urban planning and gave consideration to how buildings and urban areas age over time. Here, Rossi’s theory is applied to his own works from that period, both built and unbuilt, in a careful selection of 23 projects that express this memory-based paradigm of civic existence and construction. Aldo Rossi: The Urban Fact thus unifies Rossi’s theory and practice, demonstrating the visionary dimension driving his singular brand of postmodernism.

Aldo Rossi, after graduating in 1959, worked on the magazine Casabella-Continuità, which he edited from 1961 to 1964. From 1966, the year in which he published his first important text, The architecture of the City, Rossi's early work is a response to the continuity of certain formal patterns in Italian rationalism and the significance of history in architecture. His later work has been shaped by mannerism and a tirelss determination to keep on inventing, showing evident signs of modernism and innovation. In his secondary capacity as designer of interiors, furniture and objects, he has more directly recreated the conventional comfort of his own world of forms.

Summary:

Summary:
Aldo Rossi (1931-97) is a key figure in 20th-century architecture. Discarding utopian pretences, his work claimed the autonomy of architecture with formal restraint, and remains highly influential both in theory and practice until the present day. In this new book, Diogo Seixas Lopes looks at Rossi's work through the lens of a term often used to describe the great architect's work: melancholy. While the influence of melancholy on literature and visual arts has been debated extensively, its presence in architecture has been largely overlooked. By exploring Rossi's entire career, Lopes traces out the oscillation between enthusiasm and disenchantment that marks Rossi's oeuvre.

Summary:
Gabriele Basilico followed Aldo Rossi's work for almost twenty years, accompanying his rise to become a leading figure in international architecture (winning the Pritzker Prize in 1990). His photographs reveal their deep professional affinity: the two shared Milanese origins, degrees from the Politecnico, an interest in social issues and urban transformation, and even more importantly, the moral compass with which they explored the world around them. Growing up in a Milan of which the industrial civilisation was by then in its death throes, they grasped the opportunity to create a new language still mindful of tradition. The volume brings together Basilico's photographs of Rossi's architecture for the first time, and is enriched by contributions from Chiara Spangaro and Pier Paolo Tamburelli, project notes by Rossi, as well as the writings that they dedicated to each other.

Summary:
This crucial reassessment of Aldo Rossi’s (1931–1997) architecture simultaneously examines his writings, drawings, and product design, including the coffeepots and clocks he designed for the Italian firm Alessi. The first Italian to receive the Pritzker Prize, Rossi rejected modernism, seeking instead a form of architecture that could transcend the aesthetic legacy of Fascism in postwar Italy. By delving into the relationships among Rossi’s multifaceted life, his rich body of work, and his own reflections, this book provides a critical new understanding of Rossi’s buildings and the place of architecture in postwar Italy.

Aldo Rossi, a practicing architect and leader of the Italian architectural movement La Tendenza, is also one of the most influential theorists writing today. The Architecture of the City is his major work of architectural and urban theory. In part a protest against functionalism and the Modern Movement, in part an attempt to restore the craft of architecture to its position as the only valid object of architectural study, and in part an analysis of the rules and forms of the city's construction, the book has become immensely popular among architects and design students.

Summary:
Colorful and humorous, and utilizing simple forms such as cones, cylinders and cubes, Rossi's graphic output extends his vision of the city as a unified entity composed of consistent rather than unconnected structures. Rossi's architectural vocabulary synthesized medieval and Renaissance precedents (most famously in his floating theatre created for the 1979 Venice Biennale) in a manner that led him to be tagged a postmodernist in the 80s, especially in the US where he taught for many years at Yale and Cornell, and erected buildings in Pennsylvania, Florida and Texas. As the work of Rossi and his generation receives renewed critical attention, this volume celebrates one of the postwar era's leading architectural imaginations.
