Il s’interroge, enfin, sur la dénaturation « tranquille » d’un concept philosophique, ses usages hybrides qui l’apparentent aussi bien à la « machine-à-habiter » de Le Corbusier qu’aux « modes d’habiter » décrits par les anthropologues. Cet essai au ton personnel, emprunte à l’autobiographie, au récit de voyage, à la spéculation théorique et à la géohistoire comparée des idées afin de réaffirmer la puissance du concept heideggérien et de le confronter à la vie urbaine contemporaine.

Une des plus célèbres maisons de verre est celle édifiée par les architectes Pierre Chareau et Bernard Bijvoet rue Saint-Guillaume à Paris de 1927 à 1931. En 1935 le jeune architecte Paul-Amaury Michel, au retour d'une visite chez Le Corbusier, édifie à son tour à Bruxelles une maison de verre qui constitue une adroite synthèse du concept de machine à habiter et de la maison de Chareau. Classée monument en 1998, la maison de verre a fait l'objet d'une restauration scrupuleuse en 2002.
