Description:
- The series "Running Fence 1997" focuses "on the first 14 miles of the border fence that separates the United States and Mexico, beginning at the Pacific Ocean and ending in the Otay Mountains.... [It] analyzes the "idea" of the border and explores its iconography, the border being a subject that is of extreme importance to the public as the world proceeds towards greater globalization. [Geoffrey] James has written of the project: "[The border fence] was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1994, out of recycled metal landing strip - the most visible symbol of what is known as Operation Gatekeeper. Because the steel sheets are placed in the ground so that their ridges run horizontally, a man can hop over the fence with ease; and no Mexican child ever seems to be impeded from retrieving a soccer ball from US territory. The real barrier to illegal immigration from Mexico into the USA is less visible: hundreds of buried sensors linked to a central computer, nightscopes, helicopters and Border Patrol Agents in white Broncos."" Applausi [Applause] (1968)
AP207.S1.1968.PR05
Description:
This project series documents Pettena's design for "Applausi", a suitcase split in half to create two flashing signs with the word "Applausi". The signs were designed for the music performance by Vittorio Gelmetti, "La descrittione del gran paese" a post-pop opera for which Pettena was also in charge of the scene direction. The performance was presented at the 6th Festival of Avant-Garde Music at the Teatro Biondo, in Palermo, in December 1968. The signs were placed on each side of the stage, toward the audience. "The text, together with others that indicated the piano, the singer and the cello, reminded the audience of the habits of an illiterate public participating in a televised show." [1] The "Applausi" signs were also presented in the exhibition "The living currency" in Varsaw, at the Teatr Dramatyczny in 2010, and at the 6th Berlin Biennale at the Hau1, Die lebende Münze, in 2010. The project series contains photographs of the 'Applausi' signs, a drawing of the sign, and a draft poster showing the display of the stage for Vittorio Gelmetti performance at the 6th Festival of Avant-Garde Music. The project series also includes photographs of the music performance, a video of Pettena and the sign at the Berlin Biennale in 2010, and project descriptions in English and Italian. AP018.S1.1958.PR03
Description:
This project series documents the design and construction of Toronto City Hall and Civic Square in Toronto from 1958-1965. The office identified the project number as 5867. The design of Toronto's New City Hall, built next to its older counterpart, was realized through an international architectural competition that attracted more than 500 entries from around the world. Eventually, a unanimous jury chose Finnish architect Viljo Revell's design, cementing the age of modernist architecture in Toronto. However, the rules stated that if the winning architect was not part of the Ontario Association of Architects, they were required to partner with a local firm. In this way, John B. Parkin Associates was chosen as the associate architects for this project. The design was comprised of a concrete dome house, which contained the city council chambers, surrounded by two curved office towers, all perched on top of a podium, with a public square to the south, known as Nathan Phillips Square. The buildings were 816,000 square feet in size, the west tower having 18 office floors and the east tower with 25. The project is recorded through drawings, a mounted presentation photograph of the project and textual records dating from 1958-1966. The drawings are mostly reprographic copies, which include plans, elevations, sections, details and perspectives. The textual records consist of a competition synopsis book, a book of submission materials for the competition, and correspondence between Parkin and Revell.

Phun City
AP144.S2.D77
Description:
File documents the executed project for Phun City, a "temporary city" for an outdoor pop music festival at Ecclesden Commons in Sussex, England. Cedric Price was commissioned to coordinate the design and construction of the site, which was to include a stage, tower, cinema, theatre, administration and medical buildings, movable sleeping structures, public toilets, fencing, crash barriers and access roads. Drawings illustrate the development of the functional relationships among activities, as well as, access to, and circulation within, the concert site. A site plan shows the broader context of Ecclesden Commons; keyed diagrammatic plans locate main activity enclosures, pedestrian and vehicular access routes, proposed parking, emergency routes to and from the site, and wire and chain link barriers and fences. A diagrammatic site plan shows the final layout, including last minute alterations prior to the opening of the concert. A second site plan has been marked up with notes indicating how the spectators appropriated the site during the concert, moving some of the portable buildings and circulating in patterns that were different than those anticipated by Price. The client for Phun City Festival, Mick Farren was involved at the Isle of Wright Festival which was held one month later (Price with Murray 1971, 40). Some material in this file was published in "Cedric Price Supplement No. 2", 'Architectural Design', vol. 41, (January 1971), 40, and 'Cedric Price-Works II' (London: Architectural Press, 1984), 18, 30. Material in this file was produced between 1970 and 1971. File contains design development drawings, map, photographic materials, and textual records.

Synopsis:
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The PGL architectes fonds, 1959 - 1994, documents the work and activities of the Montréal-based architecture firm, Papineau Gérin-Lajoie Le Blanc architectes, and its successor and affiliate companies. The records within this fonds represent 70 architectural projects undertaken by the firm, which include projects throughout Québec, Ottawa, and various locations in Nunavut, as well as some international projects. The fonds offers evidence of PGL’s participation in the construction of colonial infrastructure in Nunavik and Nunavut, including work on schools that are connected to Federal Hostels which are recognised as part of Canada's Indian Residential School system. The fonds also contains records documenting PGL’s use of modular, fiberglass-reinforced plastic panels in construction. The records within this fonds largely consist of drawings, photographic materials, and textual records.
