Every story chronicles how an idea comes into being, making visible the diverse approaches and the merging together of various fields that go into constructing a work of architecture. Part essay, part picture book, the series takes the form of a visual reader as a way to ‘see the thinking’ behind the works and practices.

Summary:
Fit is a book about architecture and society that seeks to fundamentally change how architects and the public think about the task of design. Distinguished architect and urbanist Robert Geddes argues that buildings, landscapes, and cities should be designed to fit: fit the purpose, fit the place, fit future possibilities. Fit replaces old paradigms, such as form follows function, and less is more, by recognizing that the relationship between architecture and society is a true dialogue -dynamic, complex, and, if carried out with knowledge and skill, richly rewarding.

Summary:
This instalment investigates two main themes: Live/Work Hybrids and Recovering Wood. In the first, seven small office projects are examined that raise questions about how working space will be organized in the future. With advancements in communications technology, Fraher Architects, Carlo Bagliani, Akitoshi Ukai and others demonstrate the office block’s possible demise. Also, wood is back in fashion. Projects by Shigeru Ban, Gensler, HAMR and more show its recovery as a contemporary building material, revealing the motives for this renewed interest, like technological discoveries and softening the encounter between our natural and built environment.

Summary:
Erling Viksjø's buildings challenge our notions about what constitutes good architecture. His extensive use of concrete, modules and repetitive shapes has caused many to describe him as Norway's foremost Brutalist architect. Viksjø also went furthest in collaborating with visual artists. "Concrete in transition" examines the encounter between art and architecture in Viksjø's projects. How could one attain a unified design where art was no longer an addition to, or in competition with, the architecture? This publication discusses Viksjø's collaborations with well-established artists such as Hannah Ryggen and Kai Fjell, and young Modernists including Odd Tandberg, Carl Nesjar and Inger Sitter. In addition, it discusses the projects in which he collaborated with Pablo Picasso.

From humble prefabs to the colossal Park Hill in Sheffield, the number of English buildings listed for their special architectural and historical interest is truly staggering; since 1987 alone, more than 300 have received the honor. Every one of them appears here, with 350 color photos, right from the very first post-war residence listed: Sir Albert Richardson's Bracken House, built for the Financial Times in 1955-59 and originally threatened with demolition. Students, architects, tourists, and historians will all find it fascinating to learn about how the process works, its controversial extension to recent architecture, and how the choices are made. Every region in England is covered, with London divided into three areas. The buildings range from traditional works to internationally outstanding modern structures, and include Gibberd's Liverpool and Spence's Coventry Cathedral, the Smithson's Hunstanton School, and Taylor & Green's Norfolk housing.

Summary:
Filled with drawings, collages, and models, this book examines how each firm’s utopian vision was shaped by the times in which it was conceived. The designs by Archigram, a Londonbased firm headed by Peter Cook, Ron Herron and Dennis Crompton, date back to the moon landing and an era filled with hope for new beginnings. By contrast, the latter project, the work of Future Systems, headed by Czech architect Jan Kaplický and David Nixon, was conceptualized at the height of the Cold War, when the future appeared gloomy. While Archigram conceived organic architectures to ensure survival in inhospitable environments, the technical looking designs by Future Systems are intended for use in more friendly climes. Although the majority of these utopian designs were never realized, their plans offer a fascinating look at how architects prepare for a world they can only imagine.
