Summary:
American Art Museum Architecture: Documents and Design explores all aspects of, and approaches to, museum architecture—the aesthetic, the practical, the innovative, and the functional. Architectural historian Eric M. Wolf delves into the archives of some of the country’s premier institutions not only to explore the design decisions made at their founding, but also to understand how those institutions have continued to evolve along with their collections, up to the present day. Wolf examines the gradual development of six major museums: the Frick Collection, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York; the Menil Collection in Houston, the Georgia O’Keefe Museum in Santa Fe, and the Art Institute of Chicago. He explains how each museum was originally conceived, how the architecture reflected or modified that original conception, and how the buildings have been reconsidered or revised in later years, as the nature of art, art display, and museum-going has evolved.

Summary:
One of the delights of life is the discovery and rediscovery of patterns of order and beauty in nature—designs revealed by slicing through a head of cabbage or an orange, the forms of shells and butterfly wings. These images are awesome not just for their beauty alone, but because they suggest an order underlying their growth, a harmony existing in nature. What does it mean that such an order exists; how far does it extend? The Power of Limits was inspired by those simple discoveries of harmony. The author went on to investigate and measure hundreds of patterns—ancient and modern, minute and vast. His discovery, vividly illustrated here, is that certain proportions occur over and over again in all these forms. Patterns are also repeated in how things grow and are made—by the dynamic union of opposites—as demonstrated by the spirals that move in opposite directions in the growth of a plant. The joining of unity and diversity in the discipline of proportional limitations creates forms that are beautiful to us because they embody the principles of the cosmic order of which we are a part; conversely, the limitlessness of that order is revealed by the strictness of its forms. The author shows how we, as humans, are included in the universal harmony of form, and suggests that the union of complementary opposites may be a way to extend that harmony to the psychological and social realms as well.

Summary:
Most historical and critical discussions of gardens focus on their design. What happens after the completion of the design, however, is largely ignored, which neglects a much larger part of the site's interest and potential. For gardens, John Dixon Hunt contends, are experienced, often by a succession of visitors at different times and often from different cultures; this experience, though determined by the original design and its subsequent modifications, also augments the site's potentialities, and this "afterlife" of gardens comes to enhance the original moment of creation. One way of exploring the experience of designed landscapes is to adapt literary reception theory to the study of gardens. Hunt argues that such an approach via the reception or experience of gardens enlarges how we should understand their significance and meanings. It is generally assumed that the experience of gardens became a prime ingredient of late eighteenth-century landscapes -- picturesque literature especially highlighted how visitors responded to their surroundings, reading inscriptions and recognizing the significance of carefully placed architectural items or fabriqués. But there is considerable evidence for a much earlier interest in how experience came to constitute an essential aspect of a site beyond the intentions of the original designer or patron. Among other early examples, Hunt examines the book “Hypnerotomachia Polifili” (1499) to show how its protagonist is shown exploring and negotiating a series of strange and baffling landscapes. Through other inquiries -- particularly into the role of movement in such different situations as Versailles, and Chiswick or along modern highways – “The Afterlife of Gardens” provides a fresh approach to the study of designed landscapes that goes beyond their production and into how they exist and are understood by their users. In this ambitious new book the author shows how the complete history of a garden must extend beyond the moment of its design and the aims of the designer to record its subsequent reception. He raises questions about the preservation of historical sites, and provides lessons for the contemporary designer, who may perhaps be more attentive to the life of a work after its design and implementation. This book will interest all who have a professional interest in gardens, as well as the wide general audience for gardens and landscapes of past and present.

Summary:
"The architectural project" considers the practice of architectural design as it has developed during the last two centuries. In this challenging interpretation of design education and its effect on design process and products, Argentinean scholar Alfonso Corona-Martínez emphasizes the distinction between an architectural project, created in the architect's mind and materialized as a set of drawings on paper, and the realized three-dimensional building. Corona-Martínez demonstrates how representation plays a substantial role in determining both the notion and the character of architecture, and he traces this relationship from the Renaissance into the Modern era, giving detailed considerations of Functionalism and Typology. His argument clarifies the continuity in the practice of design method through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a continuity that has been obscured by the emphasis on changing goals instead of design procedures.

Summary:
To mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Alvar Aalto, one of the most important figures in architectural history, this exhibition will showcase the extensive body of work he created with his two wives, Aino and Elissa. The Aaltos revolutionised the humanist aspect of modern architecture by grounding it in an organic connection to nature, producing countless designs in the process. Between the two world wars, the Aaltos helped to create an identity for the young Finnish nation. They participated in the International Congresses of Modern Architecture and the Paris and New York exhibitions and designed masterpieces such as the Viipuri Library (now in Russia), Villa Mairea in Finland, Baker House in the United States and Maison Carré in France. Following the introduction of antibiotics, their Paimio Sanatorium set an example to the world by demonstrating how spaces could be made healthier and more accessible, through studies of solar incidence, natural ventilation and silent washbasins. Sanatorium is one of the thirteen Aalto-designed projects currently proposed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The book accompanying the exhibition features a preface by António Choupina, director of the Architecture Department at the Serralves Foundation and curator of the exhibition, and Jukka Savolainen, director of the Alvar Aalto Museum. It also includes contributions from architect Álvaro Siza and Juhani Pallasmaa, architect, professor emeritus at Aalto University, Helsinki, and writer.

Summary:
Anne Varichon traces the emergence of modern color charts from a set of processes developed over the centuries in various contexts. She presents illuminating examples that bring this remarkable story to life, from ancient writings revealing attention to precise shade to contemporary designers’ color charts, dyers’ notebooks, and Werner’s famous color nomenclature. Varichon argues that color charts have linked generations of artists, artisans, scientists, industrialists, and merchants, and have played an essential and enduring role in the way societies think about color. Drawing on nearly two hundred documents from public and private collections, almost all of them previously unpublished, this wonderfully illustrated book shows how the color chart, in its many distinct forms and expressions, is a practical tool that has transcended its original purpose to become an educational aid and subject of contemplation worthy of being studied and admired.

Summary:
Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) was a pioneer of modern design in France during the twentieth century. Her avant-garde vision was expressed in color, organic forms, and streamlined functionality, elements which are still at the heart of contemporary design today. Her furnishings were created from aluminum, rubber, chrome, leather, bamboo, and above all, wood; their appeal is timeless. This lavishly illustrated book, accompanying a major retrospective at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, explores how much in the vanguard she was in her use of materials, in her social and political awareness, and in her collaborations with artists, architects, and other designers. The show presents a global vision of her creativity, talent, and inventiveness, exploring her commitment to women and to a humanist design ethos that took into account the middle and working classes with an emphasis on rationalizing costs and space.
