Summary:
Specializing in the design of museum and gallery spaces, hospitality, commercial retail and residential projects, Miami-based Rene Gonzalez Architects also endeavors to develop solutions to rising sea levels in coastal communities. This volume compiles drawings and photographs of a residence on Prairie Avenue in Miami designed by the firm in 2018. Inspired by red mangrove trees, the dwelling hovers entirely above the ground plane. A lush garden covers most of the site and absorbs enormous quantities of water. Charles Renfro celebrates the building thus: "Is this blown-up modernism, a house made of fragments and gaps, also a new gay architecture? If so, it is but one of the many ways this compact complex house performs, one that in so many ways pulls modernism forward into a brave new world of sensuality, sexuality and lifestyle. Within it, social progress has found a new architecture."

Summary:
This book provides an intellectual history of the modernist "minimum dwelling", exploring how early modernism saw mass housing as a primary vehicle for achieving the utopian transformation of society. It reappraises the often-overlooked 2nd and 3rd CIAM conferences (1929-31), addressing their engagement with the "minimum dwelling" and revealing them both as milestones in the organisation's annals and as seminal moments in the history of interwar modernism. Split into two parts, ''The Minimum Dwelling'' Revisited first takes a genealogical approach to explore the provenance of the concept of "minimum dwelling" prior to the 2nd and 3rd CIAM conferences, it then traces the proceedings of the two conferences themselves. Addressing the origins of the "minimum dwelling" concept but also its legacies, and serving as a corrective to the overemphasis on 4th CIAM conference and the Athens Charter, the book is essential reading for scholars researching urban design during the Interwar period.

Summary:
How can “Nordic Modernism” be defined? Did German city planners look to the North for inspiration after the Second World War? In what way did their social model affect architecture and city planning in the Nordic countries? What specific features characterize architecture and town planning in the Nordic countries compared with postwar Germany? The fiftieth anniversary of Interbau 1957 presented a timely opportunity to reappraise the Hansaviertel in Berlin and the entire New Building movement. In this context, Nordic conceptions of architecture and town planning seemed particularly worthy of critical reflection. The “people's home” (folkhem), as well as various national strands of modernization, architectural preferences and even geopolitical considerations play a role in the formation of the Nordic model. The contributors to this volume take the example of the Hansaviertel as an opportunity to investigate Nordic-German transfer in modernism—aesthetically, socioculturally and programmatically.
