Summary:
This book is an historical investigation of mourning sites and practices within the context of the province of British Columbia. The authors are concerned, primarily, with the rise of the roadside death memorial in the late twentieth century. They argue that RDMs are not a marginal, quirky phenomenon but part of a longer and complex story about the meaning of both death and grieving, one more thread in a long tapestry of public exhibitions of grief that serve to announce to the watching world who we are.

Summary:
In the 15 structures illustrated in this book, Trulove highlights cabins with the most modern of conveniences. Built of steel, glass, and recycled materials--though some, if not most, still use wood--these cabins blend into their natural settings, inclusive of vegetation. Although the interiors highlighted are a refuge from the outdoors, the porches, windows, and doors onto the surrounding forests are integrated within. Trulove includes floor plans, elevations, and site plans that will appeal to more do-it-yourself readers. The great variation in size and natural settings of these cabins allows readers to find locations and new concepts and applications of the traditional cabin that will work with their own desires and in their own environs.

Summary:
A clever and refreshing approach to learning about shapes, with a bit of silliness mixed in. This unexpected take on shapes offers a breath of fresh air within this well-established toddler concept genre. With bright block-art visuals and a rhythmic, read-aloud text, this book begins by offering familiar shapes - a triangle, a circle, and a square - and then throws an elephant into the equation: triangle, elephant, circle. Surely an elephant doesn't belong in a book on shapes... or does it? The joy of the unexpected, including guest appearances by boats, lemons, and other random but recognizable silhouettes, in a shape-driven narrative will prompt giggles and squeals, as children build skills of labelling and classifying.

Summary:
New Geographies 11: Extraterrestrial explores the historical and contemporary consequence of our planetary relationship with space. It interprets this duality through the conceptual lens of “extraterrestrial,” which engages an entangled zone of expanding practices in geography, landscape, and architecture, stretching Earth to space, and conversely, space to Earth. This issue questions the means through which space is forged as a condition extra to our own terra. Complicit within this imagination resides a deep political and economic logic that serves to territorialize outer space as an exception to, and extension of, Earth. These critical processes are revealed as not extra at all, but rather distinctly of terra. Through a series of written, photographic, and representational investigations, this edition of New Geographies builds on earlier studies of outer space from science, technology and society, as well as from the design disciplines, history, and critical geography. It reinforces the need for humanity’s changing relationship with outer space to be recorded, critiqued, and theorized from a breadth of academic traditions and projected within design discourse. This issue brings together experts contributing to the social, political, and cultural imaginary implicit in extraterrestrial. Three primary thematic territorial devices structure these explorations: a technologically constructed space between, a material culture constructed and discharged, and a space politically and economically reflective, all revealed through historical and contemporary society.

For the first time, the speculative in architecture becomes a topic of critical research. It is investigated not as idealistic but as strategic acting within endless modernity. This modernity implies that speculation, as strategic acting, is not only applied to economic but also to political and aesthetic values. Summary:
Libraries are generally perceived as storehouses, spaces of neutral accumulation and containment. While the architecture may attempt to operate in this stable mode, the material contained within them is often far wilder. Histories, biographies, loose thoughts, and detailed notations are temporarily suspended, cataloged, and organized, creating relationships where perhaps previously there were none. The trajectory of the Staatsbibliothek Berlin exposes the tension between what is contained in libraries and how it is contained in a highly palpable way. This new artist book charts three narratives associated with the life of this particular library.

Foraging for mushrooms with John Cage: writing, art, photography and ephemera from an idiosyncratic chapter in the composer's life Imagined as an extended mushroom-foraging expedition, John Cage: A Mycological Foray gathers together Cage’s mushroom-themed compositions, photographs, illustrations and ephemera. Indeterminacy Stories and other writings by Cage are interwoven throughout the first volume within a central essay examining Cage’s enduring relationship with mycology. Also included is a transcript of Cage’s 1983 performance, MUSHROOMS et Variationes. The second volume is the inaugural reproduction of Cage’s 1972 portfolio, Mushroom Book, authored in collaboration with illustrator Lois Long and botanist Alexander H. Smith. Readers are thus drawn through the landscape of Cage’s mycologically centred oeuvre and interests, discovering assorted works, images, compositions, philosophies and ephemera, as one might encounter assorted fungi and flora while foraging.
