Summary:
Austin Spare's lifelong interest in cartomancy is well documented, yet very few of his own fortune-telling cards were thought to have survived. This compelling new example of the artist's early work demonstrates his precocious involvement with the currents that shaped the British Occult Revival at the beginning of the twentieth century, and his interactions with some of the period's artistic and political protagonists including Aleister Crowley, Arthur Ivey, Sylvia Pankhurst, and Pamela Colman Smith. Magic Circle Museum curator and artist Jonathan Allen set about tracing the deck's provenance, its place in the artist's oeuvre, and within the wider histories of cartomancy, potentially re-writing the history of popular Tarot in the early twentieth century.

Dieter Roth left his mark in Lucerne: close, long-standing friendships and traces in his works. Tränen in Luzern (Tears in Lucerne) complements the volume Inserate 1971/1972 with material for the original version of the Tränenmeer (Sea of Tears) project that – with its instalments and different stages of development – counts as one of Roth’s major literary projects. An in-depth essay by Stefan Ripplinger places Tränenmeer within Roth’s œuvre as a whole, and an entertaining interview by Barbara Wien with the collector and gallery owner Erica Ebinger provides an enlightening insight into her intense friendship with Dieter Roth as well as background information on how the work came about. An incomparable treasure trove on Lucerne, which is not only of interest to those in central Switzerland but, first and foremost, is addressed to Dieter Roth’s collectors around the world.

Summary:
Zoe Leonard’s practice involves a type of cerebral roaming combined with carefully considered observation. For more than 20 years she has criss-crossed nature and culture, cityscapes and museums, always searching for signs that say something about structures, about natural and cultural conditions and the contradictions, parallels and connections among them. Leonard's photographs – of anatomical wax figures, fashion shows, trees and fences – present figures in sparse black-and-white images that open up a visual field of thought and reveal within it our visible world, that is, the concrete and established structures that make up our reality. At documenta 9 in Kassel Leonard created a stir with her placement of black-and-white photographs of female genitalia in the context of a male-dominated museum. The political aspects of her work form the backdrop of her constant struggle with shape, with imagery, with the union of symbols and content. This is the first book encompassing her complete oeuvre.

Summary:
Complex Order was born of a necessity to build a conversation around the work of spmb [São Paulo-Manitoba], in dialogue with other practitioners, artists, architects, theoreticians, and critics, mapping out the regions of understanding of what they do. Complex Order generates a public space of sorts, stretching the discussion of public space itself—its poetics and politics, its actions and representations. Rather than follow the tradition of the monograph, centred in the production of the individual artist, Complex Order rethinks the artist’s book, investigating the relationships of spmb’s work within a larger context.

Summary:
"Visions of the city" is a dramatic history of utopian urbanism in the twentieth century. It explores radical demands for new spaces and ways of living, and considers their effects on planning, architecture and struggles to shape urban landscapes. The author critically examines influential utopian approaches to urbanism in western Europe associated with such figures as Ebenezer Howard and Le Corbusier, uncovering the political interests, desires and anxieties that lay behind their ideal cities. He also investigates avant-garde perspectives from the time that challenged these conceptions of cities, especially from within surrealism. At the heart of this richly illustrated book is an encounter with the explosive ideas of the situationists. Tracing the subversive practices of this avant-garde group and its associates from their explorations of Paris during the 1950s to their alternative visions based on nomadic life and play, David Pinder convincingly explains the significance of their revolutionary attempts to transform urban spaces and everyday life. He addresses in particular Constant's New Babylon, finding within his proposals a still powerful provocation to imagine cities otherwise. The book not only recovers vital moments from past hopes and dreams of modern urbanism. It also contests current claims about the 'end of utopia', arguing that reconsidering earlier projects can play a critical role in developing utopian perspectives today. Through the study of utopian visions, it aims to rekindle elements of utopianism itself.

His strength lies in simplification of form and function, evident in his use of archetypal elements and themes such as the house-within-a-house and the internal street. Brought to international acclaim with his design for the Foreign Ministry building in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in the early 80s, Larsen's most recent works include Christiansbro and the Danish Design Center, both located in Copenhagen.
