Summary:
Drained by a half-dozen major watersheds, cut by a network of deep ravines and fronting on a Great Lake, Toronto is dominated by water. Like most cities, though, Toronto has mismanaged its water, from the decades-long transformation of the citys creeks into sewersheds to the alteration of Torontos waterfront. Recently, the trend of fettering Torontos water and putting it underground has been countered by persistent citizen-led efforts to recall and restore the citys surface water. In HTO: Torontos Water From Lake Iroquois to Taddle Creek and Beyond, 30 contributors examine the ever-changing interplay between nature and culture, and call into question the citys past, present and future engagement with water.

Summary:
An explosion of little architectural magazines in the 1960s and 1970s instigated a radical transformation in architectural culture, as the magazines acted as a site of innovation and debate. Clip, Stamp, Fold takes stock of seventy little magazines from this period that were published in over a dozen cities. Coined in the early twentieth century to designate progressive literary journals, the term little magazine was remobilized during the 1960s to grapple with the contemporary proliferation of independent architectural periodicals. In addition to short-lived radical magazines, this book includes pamphlets and building instruction manuals along with professional magazines that experienced moments of littleness, influenced by the graphics and intellectual concerns of their self-published contemporaries.

Summary:
''Constructing Imperial Berlin'' is the first book to critically assess, contextualize, and frame urban and architectural photographs of the Imperial years in Berlin between 1871 and 1918. Berlin, as it was pronounced Germany's capital in 1871, was fraught with questions that had previously beset Paris and London. How was urban expansion and transformation to be absorbed? What was the city's understanding of its comparably short history? Given this short history, how did it embody the idea of a capital? A key theme of this book is the close interrelation of the city's rapid physical metamorphosis with repercussions on promotional and critical narratives, the emergence of groundbreaking photographic technologies, and novel forms of mass distribution.

Summary:
'Marginalia' draws our attention towards the territory of the overseen elements coexisting in the realm of the book itself. Text and image content of several art books designed by Anja Lutz withdraw to let appear the non-descript details: the margins, the edges, the backgrounds, the spaces between the lines … Each book is unique in its choice of format, material, layout, and rhythm. The selected pages underwent a process of transformation in which with surgical precision Lutz dissects them, layer by layer, removing the vital parts and revealing their skeleton. The results are filigrane grids, fragments of images and traces of the layout that form intricately layered compositions of voids, exposing the hidden relations between the pages.

Summary:
"Urban Grids: Handbook for Regular City Design" is the result of a five-year design research project undertaken by professor Joan Busquets and Dingliang Yang at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. The research that is the foundation for this publication emphasizes the value of open forms for city design, a publication that specifically insists that the grid has the unique capacity to absorb and channel urban transformation flexibly and productively. "Urban Grids" analyzes cities and urban projects that utilize the grid as the main structural device for allowing rational development, and goes further to propose speculative design projects capable of suggesting new urban paradigms drawn from the grid as a design tool.

A much-anticipated look at one of the most dramatic and exciting urban transformations in America. This book tells the story of the more than twenty-five-year history of architect Eric Moss’s transformation of a once blighted warehouse district on the edge of Los Angeles—the Hayden Tract in Culver City. With stunning and dramatic interventions, more than fifty of the old buildings now host such forward-looking, avant-garde high-tech and graphic design companies as Nike, Converse, AOL, Ogilvy International, Go Daddy, and Kodak. The buildings have names like Beehive, Stealth, Slash and Backslash, and Pterodactyl, and the district has become a favorite for firms involved in the film industry.

Part of the World Cities series, Montréal provides a guide to the birth, growth and contemporary life of this unique North American metropolis. The authors address some of the fundamental paradoxes at the core of the city's dilemma: How does the city reconcile its identity as a French window on North America and a bilingual, increasingly multicultural metropolis? How can its economy, currently undergoing a successful transformation into a high-tech hotbed, still suffer from high unemployment? How can a city that is seemingly allergic to urban planning, that has such a long and cold winter and that remains divided between two cultural and linguistic majorities be so frequently ranked one of the world's most livable cities?

Summary:
Published in conjunction with the "metalworks – designing & making" exhibition in the Konschthal Esch, this book uses the production of some twenty international creators to discuss methods of transforming metal in contemporary design. Around forty objects have been classified into sixteen categories, illustrating how these creators have adopted and crafted metal. Some experiment with the material and its properties, others question the physical limits of existing techniques. Accompanied by a historical text recounting the uses of metal in furniture since the eighteenth century, and the history of the metallurgical industry in Luxembourg, this publication brings together some sixty biographies, explanatory texts, and a technical lexicon on methods of transformation and the selected objects.
