Summary:
In ''The New Interior'', architectural historian Christopher Long examines how, over the course of the seven years preceding World War I, three leading Viennese modernists—Josef Hoffmann, Adolf Loos and Oskar Strnad—redefined the idea of the modern interior. While their building designs shaped Vienna’s urban landscape and exemplified the famous Secession movement, these three architects also applied their eclectic principles to domestic interiors, or Wohnkultur (meaning "living" or "dwelling culture"). This book follows the progress of their debates and works, and how each designer sought to frame his own distinctive vision of living. The result was a split between the imperatives of style, function and livability that is still in play today.

Summary:
Between 2010 and 2020, Caruso St John expanded its reputation for sensitive and characterful architecture through a remarkable range of projects. Major buildings in the heart of Swiss, German, and Belgian cities explored the role urban landmarks can play in the present day, while smaller domestic projects provided the opportunity for experiments in restoration, materials, and colour. Transforming buildings for reuse – from beloved public institutions to longabandoned industrial sites – became a focal point for the practice as it sought to emphasise its work with the existing rather than contribute to the escalating production of new construction. Their designs for memorials, exhibitions, and museums further developed this engagement with memory and an aliveness to the past.

Summary:
Wolfgang Laib’s concentrated installations are touching in an immediate and fundamental way, perhaps because they also address various levels of early childhood consciousness. Beeswax tunnels are redolent with an overwhelming scent of sweet honey and pollen; powdery piles of pollen are such a luminous yellow that you want to put your hands in it and play. Visitors to the installations are "opened up" to the spiritual dimension, become aware of the energetic presence of the natural materials shown, and are prepared for a spiritual and intellectual encounter with their symbolic content. This retrospective monograph features all of the key categories of Laib’s oeuvre, establishing the unique position and great auratic power of works that consistently question crucial issues.

Summary:
When does the idea for the materiality of an architecture arise? What role does the context and its character play? Does the typology have an effect on the material formulation of buildings? What relevance does the function have for the choice of a material? Is the aging ability of materials taken into account in the design? And can light be understood as material? These(...)

When does the idea for the materiality of an architecture arise? What role does the context and its character play? Does the typology have an effect on the material formulation of buildings? What relevance does the function have for the choice of a material? Is the aging ability of materials taken into account in the design? And can light be understood as material? These and other questions characterize the process of designing buildings for craftmans. The models and drawings of the designs alternate with the contributions by the architects Andreas Bründler, Piero Bruno and Thomas Kröger and are as readable in connection with them as they are independent of what is written.

Summary:
''Sustainability is not enough'' reflects on the many organisations and initiatives that sit beyond conventional definition – organisations who play important roles in supporting the work of artists, and who often form the underpinnings of our artistic ecology. Taking its cue from the LODGERS programme organised collaboratively by M HKA and AIR ANTWERPEN from 2015 to 2018, the book provides the case studies of sixteen initiatives from the Eurocore region, considering the reasons they exist, their ways of working with artists and their means of survival. ''Sustainability is not enough'' offers itself as a resource for thinking about the possibilities of a broader spectrum of organisational models for providing artists with valuable spaces of opportunity, exchange and freedom.

Michel Desvigne is the most renowned French landscape architect in the world. Based in Paris, he has held guest professorships at such institutions as the Architectural Association in London and Harvard University. Desvigne's projects have a strong strategic and conceptual component. Urban infrastructure projects play a major role, and emphasize the urban planning and design expertise evident in his landscape architecture. The book documents ten of Devigne's major projects from France, the US, Spain and Qatar, in which he is responsible not only for the landscape architecture, but for coordination of the entire project. How can such highly complex projects be realized? What does the intellectual thought process look like? What specific problems arise in their realization?

Architecture is not without the plastic play of light in the excavated space. On the basis of this simple and universal axiom, Dong Gong, founder of the Vector studio based in Beijing, has conducted a series of experiments since his debut in 2008, unscrupulously mixing languages of modernity with idiomatic expressions of a vernacular flavor, innovative materials and techniques. with craftsmanship and construction tradition. If contemporary is the one who establishes a "gap" with time, that is, they are able to operate in the present without being overwhelmed and subjected by it, Dong Gong, who in his architecture makes the past and the future interact, can define himself as an architect of contemporaneity.

Summary:
2005 Turner Prize winner Simon Starling is known for his investigations into the hidden lives of objects and images, and his catalogues are an integral part of his production. The Nanjing Particles, published for an exhibition at MASS MoCA, is a unique object that takes as its departure a historical stereograph of Chinese laborers brought to Massachusetts in 1870 to break a strike. Starling literally mined the photographs for their history, extracting from their emulsion two silver particles. Enlarged one million times, the microscopic grains were translated into stainless steel sculptures fabricated by workers in Nanjing. Taking viewers through the installation and the work's fabrication process, the book reiterates the visual and conceptual play of the exhibition.

In Unnatural Wonders the Danto finds himself at a point when contemporary art has become wholly pluralistic, even chaotic-with one medium as good as another-and when the moment for the "next thing" has already passed. So the theorist goes in search of contemporary art's most exhilarating achievements, work that bridges the gap between art and life, which, he argues, is now the definitive art of our time. He argues that aesthetic considerations no longer play a central role in the experience and critique of art. Instead art addresses us in our humanity, as men and women who seek meaning in the "unnatural wonders" of art, a meaning that philosophy and religion are unable to provide.

Summary:
Metals, as surface or structure as the generators of space play a role in nearly every strain of modernization in architecture. They define complete geographies of work, production, and political life. Non-architectural metals delivered in automobiles, and hard goods in the United States and worldwide have all been sourced as the engines of the sprawling late twentieth-century city in all of its forms. Post-Ductility refers to the literal aspects of material behavior in this case of metals but also of aspects of architectural and urban space that are measured by less verifiable but nonetheless real quotients of stress and strain. It is the tension and compression of space that gives form or coherence to form.
