Summary:
Whiting shows how artists such as Vija Celmins, Llyn Foulkes, David Hockney, Dennis Hopper, Allan Kaprow, Claes Oldenburg, Ed Ruscha, and Judy Chicago helped to shape the identity of Los Angeles as an emerging art center, while avoiding in their representation of the city the clichés of both its boosters and its detractors. Delving deep into the southern California aesthetic sensibility, "Pop L.A." recounts how the artists transformed the image of the city in works that focused on the ocean and landscape, suburban life, dilapidated houses in aging neighborhoods, streets and parking lots, and public buildings such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Summary:
This book comprises photographs of all those ominous, forbidding Los Angeles locations so hauntingly described by Chandler in his novels. From Malibu Pier to the Hollywood Sign, from Union Station to the Beverly Hills Hotel, from MGM Studios to Musso and Frank's Grill, these locales form the geography of Chandler's imagination, and conjure a world not yet entirely vanished. Clive James wrote of Chandler's fascination with Los Angeles that when he said that it had as much personality as a paper cup, he was saying what he liked about it. But Chandler was also drawn to the Hopperesque loneliness of the city, to that sense of isolate existences that never merge.

Summary:

The 2008-09 version of UCLA A.UD's SUPRASTUDIO, MEGAVOIDS, has endeavored to bring two of the main issues facing cities today to the forefront of architectural study at UCLA: future urbanism and sustainability. Neil Denari with Chris Hostetter of Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) U.S.A. and their students present the results of their study here, played out as six projects for five extremely large unoccupied sites around the greater Los Angeles area. The projects presented ask questions about city form and how transportation and urban space can work in more synchronous ways. The publication includes essays by Neil Denari, Stephen Deters, Chris Hostetter, and Jeffrey Inaba along with a selection of MEGAVOID site photos by Los Angeles photographer Benny Chan.
