Summary:
Part of the World Cities series, Montréal provides a guide to the birth, growth and contemporary life of this unique North American metropolis. The authors address some of the fundamental paradoxes at the core of the city's dilemma: How does the city reconcile its identity as a French window on North America and a bilingual, increasingly multicultural metropolis? How can its economy, currently undergoing a successful transformation into a high-tech hotbed, still suffer from high unemployment? How can a city that is seemingly allergic to urban planning, that has such a long and cold winter and that remains divided between two cultural and linguistic majorities be so frequently ranked one of the world's most livable cities?

Summary:
A much-anticipated look at one of the most dramatic and exciting urban transformations in America. This book tells the story of the more than twenty-five-year history of architect Eric Moss’s transformation of a once blighted warehouse district on the edge of Los Angeles—the Hayden Tract in Culver City. With stunning and dramatic interventions, more than fifty of the old buildings now host such forward-looking, avant-garde high-tech and graphic design companies as Nike, Converse, AOL, Ogilvy International, Go Daddy, and Kodak. The buildings have names like Beehive, Stealth, Slash and Backslash, and Pterodactyl, and the district has become a favorite for firms involved in the film industry.

Summary:
Russia's sheer size has made it difficult to mobilize resources and to govern effectively, especially given its harsh climate, vast and vulnerable borders, and the diversity of its people. In this '"Very Short Introduction," Geoffrey Hosking discusses all aspects of Russian history, from the struggle by the state to control society to the transformation of the nation into a multi-ethnic empire, Russia's relations with the West, and the post-Soviet era. Hosking, a leading international authority, examines Russian history in an impartial way, arguing that "Good Russia" and "Bad Russia" are one and the same. He also evaluates important individuals in Russian history, from Peter the Great and Catherine II to Lenin and Stalin.

Summary:
The socially oriented perspective of Volume #1, 'Rethinking the Social', is complemented by discussions of architectural and transdisciplinary theories and methodologies in Volume #2, 'After Effects'. Together these twin volumes reflect on topics such as the utopian idea of a welfare state, the role of intersubjective and non-human points of view, and the impact of historical and current images on the making of realities. The task of these books is to present a wide range of research topics that combine historical, material, and critical research approaches that respond to our current crises and challenges. Ultimately, this enables new modes of knowledge production within architecture to be advanced in its relation to societal transformation.

Summary:
In ''How the working-class home became modern, 1900–1940,'' Hubka analyzes a period when millions of average Americans saw accelerated improvement in their housing and domestic conditions. These improvements were intertwined with the acquisition of entirely new mechanical conveniences, new types of rooms and patterns of domestic life, and such innovations—from public utilities and kitchen appliances to remodeled and multi-unit housing—are at the center of the story Hubka tells. It is a narrative that traces changes in household hygiene, sociability, and privacy practices that launched large portions of the working classes into the middle class—and that, in Hubka’s telling, reconfigures and enriches the standard account of the domestic transformation of the American home.

Downtown Los Angeles has undergone a spectacular transformation over the last decade. The historic city center was given a face-lift, with new museums, skyscrapers, designer stores, restaurants and bars. In 2018, DTLA was the most rapidly gentrifying area in the US, putting pressure on many of its long-standing residents and businesses. The photographer Désirée van Hoek, who had been working in the area since 2007, has recorded the changes in the district in over 200 images. The book contains interviews with the international experts Adrienne Brown, Cody Hochstenbach, Norman M. Klein, Saskia Sassen, Jennifer Wolch and Sharon Zukin, as well as an essay by the architect and urban planner Hans Teerds.

Summary:
Published in conjunction with the "metalworks – designing & making" exhibition in the Konschthal Esch, this book uses the production of some twenty international creators to discuss methods of transforming metal in contemporary design. Around forty objects have been classified into sixteen categories, illustrating how these creators have adopted and crafted metal. Some experiment with the material and its properties, others question the physical limits of existing techniques. Accompanied by a historical text recounting the uses of metal in furniture since the eighteenth century, and the history of the metallurgical industry in Luxembourg, this publication brings together some sixty biographies, explanatory texts, and a technical lexicon on methods of transformation and the selected objects.

Summary:
This is a compilation of the dialects of reuse. Its proposition is that an obsolete entity is not only a site of depredation, it is a condition for mediation: a location for research and design processes for meaningful change through reuse. In other words, the creative re-designation of all existing matter. This publication characterises centuries of these practices, and specifies their relevance to the 21st century. Our time will be characterised by its responses to the challenge of climate emergency, and to the need for social justice. It is a resource: lexicon of language, an expression of vocabularies, and a glossary of terms used to distinguish the transformation of the existing, into something new.
