Summary:
Using key texts by the German architect and theorist Gottfried Semper, Mari Hvattum offers a reinterpretation of historicism, which is here viewed both as a philosophical outlook and as an architectural problem. Hvattum focuses on Semper’s two major concerns: an understanding of the ontological significance of art and architecture, and the rendering of art and architecture as the objects of scientific investigation and prediction. Hvattum investigates the background and implications of these conflicting concerns. By examining the historicist fusion of Romanticism and Positivism, the book seeks to understand the nature as well as the limits of the modern dream of a "method of inventing". More than an intellectual biography, "Gottfried Semper and the Problem of Historicism" explores historicism and its implications for modern architectural discourse and practice.

Summary:
The 19th-century German architect and artist, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, was among the great personalities in the world of architecture. Classicism and Romanticism moved towards Modern Architecture in his buildings; his ''Collection of Architectural Designs'' led the way to our contemporary understanding of the work of the architect; and as a state master building he shaped the architectural culture of his time. A universal scholar and versatile artist, Schinkel led an intensive, if not boundless exchange with the society and the developments of the 19th century. The portrayal by one of the most renowned art and architectural historians of our time displays in richly illustrated thematic chapters the dialogue between Schinkel as a person, his oeuvre and his cultural world.

Summary:
The Polish Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale will have the pleasure of presenting a panoramic film projection of the opera Halka by Stanislaw Moniuszko, as it was staged in February for the inhabitants of Cazale, a village situated in the mountains of Haiti. The winners of this year's contest for the official Polish representation in Venice, artists C.T. Jasper and Joanna Malinowska and curator Magdalena Moskalewicz, decided to stage the opera in Haiti inspired by the mad plan of Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo, who wanted to build an opera house in the Amazon. Fascinated by Fitzcarraldo's faith in the universal power of opera, but not uncritical of the colonizing aspect of his actions, they decided to reveal and undercut its romanticism by confronting a set of very specific geographic, historical, and sociopolitical realities.

Summary:
Little known among the general public, Alexander Henderson's work laid the foundations of the Canadian romantic landscape and its themes: the magic of winter, the endless lure of the country’s lakes and waterways, the metaphysical awe inspired by the vastness of its land and its great river. But Henderson also offered a colonial vision of the young North American city and documented a number of Canada’s major railway projects. This publication accompanies the first exhibition devoted to Henderson’s entire oeuvre and focusses on photographs that highlight the tonalities, textures, and clarity characteristic of the prints of the period. Texts explore Henderson’s biography, the sources and forms of romanticism evident in his landscapes, and the genesis of his work as a process of adaptation to the New World in a context of British imperialism.

Summary:
The middle decades of the twentieth century saw an extraordinary flourishing of the illustrated, pictorial dust jacket. From the 1920s, as the potential for the book’s protective wrapping to be used for promotion and enticement became clear, artists and illustrators on both sides of the Atlantic applied their talents to this particular art form. Rising to the wide-ranging challenges posed by format and subject matter, leading artists and illustrators, including John Piper, Edward Bawden and John Minton in the UK and Ben Shahn, Edward Gorey and George Salter in the USA, brought their unique personal vision to bear on the world of books. Many of their designs reflect the changing visual styles and motifs of the period, including Bloomsbury, Art Deco, Modernism, postwar neo-romanticism and the Kitchen Sink School.

Summary:
Bialobrzeski spent over two years traveling through Germany. "Heimat", which is German for "homeland," is the result of his journey. For Germans "Heimat" is a rather difficult term which embodies conflicting tendencies: destiny or coincidence, sentimental kitsch for pensioners and revisionists, and lost paradise or childhood trauma. In Bialobrzeski's own words, "Having a home means having roots, which is not the same as being rooted to the spot." And since he is more interested in images than in places, "Heimat" is "not a book about Germany as homeland per se." Rather, it creates a fixed image of "a personalized bit of visual and cultural history." Bialobrzeski's photographs act as projection surfaces for modern man's yearning for nature-an homage to German Romanticism and at the same time bow to the works of contemporary American color photographers.

Summary:
Andrew Cross's photographs depict the spaces of the long distance road-trip - the places passed through and passed by - a landscape that is now familiar almost wherever we are. It is the vernacular landscape of a growing consumer culture - fast food outlets, shopping malls, distribution depots, truck stops - that have congregated around highway exits and intersections. This volume further contributes to his already widely published and exhibited body of work, both in Europe and America. With "Along some American highways" Andrew Cross continues his preoccupation with the functions and environments of motorised transportation. Andrew Cross brings together the inherent romanticism of the road journey with the corporate culture that now so dominates not only the environment of the American road-trip but also the wider world. His photographs are a traveller's glance of places that are themselves transient and impermanent, but all pervasive.

Summary:
From its foundation in 1957 to its self-dissolution in 1972, the Situationist International established itself as one of the most radical revolutionary organisations of the twentieth century. This book brings together leading researchers on the SI to provide a comprehensive critical analysis of the group's key concepts and contexts, from its relationship to earlier artistic avant-gardes, romanticism, Hegelianism, the history of the workers' movement and May '68 to the concepts and practices of 'spectacle', 'constructed situations', 'everyday life' and 'detournement'. The volume also considers historically underexamined areas of the SI, including the situation of women in the group and its opposition to colonialism and racism. With contributions from a broad range of thinkers including Anselm Jappe and Michael Loewy, this account takes a fresh look at the complex workings of a group that has come to define radical politics and culture in the post-war period.

Summary:
Austrian artist Katharina Anna Loidl has reworked steel engravings of Swiss alpine landscapes, transforming the original nineteenth-century prints with an etching needle and burin. By carefully removing parts of the printer’s ink, Loidl also removes portions of the landscapes. In their place, she introduces simple geometric shapes, deliberately lacking in distinguishing architectural detail so that viewers are encouraged to imagine the addition of structures of their choosing—apartment blocks, industrial buildings, or sports facilities—to the idyllic images. Landscape Engravings brings together fifty of Loidl’s alpine landscapes. Vitus Weh's essay examines the sublime and crystalline character of Loidl’s art, and Paolo Bianchi looks at aspects of romanticism as a fund, landscape as a sensation, and the art of repetition. By introducing spatial interventions to the idyllic, perhaps idealized, images, Loidl asks the reader to consider the impact of residential and industrial encroachment on the natural world and the value we ought to place on its preservation.
