Summary:
"Crafting a Modern World" is the first comprehensive book in English on Antonin and Noémi Raymond, a duo that creatively transformed design from 1917 to 1966. Best known for a series of finely detailed structures built in Japan during the 1930s, the Raymonds had prolific careers that included designs for factories, office buildings, churches, and schools as well as furniture, fabrics, and graphic design. The Raymonds combined their European modern roots with the vernacular craft traditions they discovered in regions as diverse as Japan, India, and rural Pennsylvania. They also collaborated with some of the twentieth century's leading thinkers and artists, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Cass Gilbert, Isamu Noguchi, George Nakashima, and Fernand Léger. Inspired by the conventions of traditional Japanese buildings, they brought a high level of attention to craft to all their work, from churches in Chicago and Karuizawa to the Tokyo Tennis Club, the Pacific Cable Company Station in Guam, the Golconde Dormitory in India, and houses throughout the northeastern U.S., including their own modernist interventions at a rural farmhouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Four essays round out this examination of the Raymonds' careers.

Summary:
''Common Treasures'' is a new series of books about the challenges faced by rural communities, written by people who are working on the ground and in the fields. Each volume gathers the very best essays about climate adaptation, food production and land use, and presents them as alternatives to the prevailing political discourse. This anthology, the second in the ''Common Treasures'' project, developed from a series of conversations between the architecture collective Assemble and the arts organisation Common Ground. It takes as its premise the idea that approaches to housing that are grounded in greater levels of community ownership, management and maintenance have the potential to empower communities, overcome the opposition to local development and create conditions in which skilled rural workers are part of stronger local networks of industry and agriculture. Housing built by, for and with the people who live in it makes characterful neighbourhoods that last well, are able to be maintained by their residents and facilitate investment in local labour, materials and skilled workmanship. The contributors to this anthology share their work to overcome the many obstacles to this way of working, and offer a vision which is grounded, imaginative and hopeful.

Summary:
Samuel Mockbee believed in architecture as a tool for social and environmental change. He also understood the limitations of traditional architectural teaching in providing the students with hands-on experience and a moral sense of service to the community. And so he founded the Rural Studio, 200 miles west of the Auburn University campus, in the heart of Alabama's poorest county, Hale. Until Mockbee's death in 2001, the studio had sown the land with thirty homes and community buildings. Under its successor, Andrew Freear, an architect hailing from England and a product of London's Architectural Association, the studio has continued to thrive. Over the last fifteen years, it has earned the respect of the communities it works with. Work is now pouring in, and its ambitions have grown with its reputation: larger projects are being undertaken, budgets have increased and students are now able to take on greater responsibility. In 2006, the Rural Studio was selected by the American Institute of Architects to represent the country at the famed Sao Paulo Art Biennial. Each and everyone of the forty projects exhibited was designed and built by students.

The poems in ''Naturalism, an annotated bibliography'' survey the totemic elements of rural life, a world where wells go dry, rains flood brooks and basements, and maintenance only ever slows the inevitable decline. But there’s resilience as well, in garlic scapes, rosehips, winter birds, old houses and books, and love. Goodfellow’s spare style and sensitivity to the way(...)

Summary:
Ernest Batchelder's ceramic tile making enterprise began as a modest backyard venture in rural Pasadena, California but quickly grew to prominence far beyond. New York, Minneapolis and Vancouver would soon become host to major Batchelder architectural ceramic installations. His clients ranged from restaurants to churches to high-rise office buildings but perhaps the most striking installations remain the many fireplaces gracing modest American bungalows throughout the country. This book represents the first comprehensive overview of his tilemaking.
