Summary:
a+u’s October issue features the recent works of the highly acclaimed Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. Active since the late 1960s, Alvaro Siza continues to build across different regions of the world, and each work of architecture reflects consciousness of the collective values of a place. This sensitivity is evident in different scales and material used, such as Clay Pavilion in Mexico, which recalls traditional construction techniques, and Renovation of the Manor Dos Magalhães, which sculpturally integrates new landscaped terraces with the critical function of the building, yet makes no unnecessary changes to the façade of the ruin. In addition to 16 recent works, architect and writer Nuno Grande composes a “poem to Porto,” which highlights 5 of the most influential projects by Alvaro Siza in his beloved city.

Summary:
"HEC Campus: Evolution of a Model" documents the transformation in close detail and with one hundred illustrations, including twenty newly commissioned photographs by award-winning French photographer Cyrille Weiner. After a brief history of HEC Paris since its foundation in 1881, the book takes readers through the planning and construction of its modern buildings throughout the 1960s by René Coulons, and the careful restoration of many of these buildings by Duplantier and Chipperfield. The architects also conceived an entirely new building and a surrounding park, which has become a key element of campus social life. Through essays and an interview with Martin Duplantier, the book also explores the interplay of preservation and renovation and demonstrates how this exemplary contemporary redesign can be taken as a model for this sort of planning.

Summary:
For five years the renowned Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin was closed to the public for renovation. Nevertheless, the acclaimed German photographer Michael Wesely (born 1963), best known for his long-exposure technique and publications such as ''Open Shutter'' and ''Time Works,'' was permitted to bring four ''guests'' inside the iconic building. Wesely’s four cameras, each one pointing in a different direction, were installed on the ceiling. Every day they took between 600 and 1,100 pictures with an exposure time of two minutes each. Edited into sequences of bewitching montages, this fascinating compendium allows readers to envision the building’s metamorphosis while undergoing renovations. The long exposure time is an aesthetic coup, for ephemeral, restless, rapid movements contrast with the still, timeless quality of the architecture, presenting a sophisticated interplay of identity and change.

According to the cliché, California is the place where anything goes and everyone does their own thing. Maybe that’s because everyone knows that in California there’s no terra firma: earthquakes, mudslides, fires and the occasional civil uprising cause constant upheaval and change. California is fluid. It has a sense of humor. It is a place of constant innovation, where the entertainment, aerospace and high-tech industries found a home. California is the great mecca of consumerism, but it is also legendary as fertile ground for creativity, freedom and social consciousness, where the status quo undergoes constant renovation. Earthquakes, Mudslides, Fires & Riots is the first publication to capture the enormous body of distinctive and visually ecstatic graphic design that emanated from this great state throughout most of the twentieth century.

Summary:
"The art of a chair is not its resemblance to art, but is partly its reasonableness, usefulness, and scale as a chair." This publication introduces readers to the furniture designs of renowned artist Donald Judd. Initiated by the renovation of his home and studio at 101 Spring Street in New York, and the difficulty Judd later had in furnishing his home in Marfa, Texas, these furn-iture designs exemplify the directness of form and presence for which his artworks are celebrated, as well as offering a distinct and unadorned functionality. In this book they are presented through detailed drawings and breakdowns of materials, alongside colour photography exploring their effect in situ. As well as surveying a central aspect of Judd's work, "Donald Judd Furniture" forms an eloquent mediation on functionality, form, and the possibilities of design in a world of mass-production.

Summary:
For more than twenty-five years, Swiss architects Bernhard Aebi and Pascal Vincent have been running their practice with offices in Bern and Geneva. Housing is one of the firm’s main fields of activity, yet it has also won several high-profile public commissions, such as the restoration and reconstruction of Switzerland’s national parliament building in Bern, the renovation of the Swiss National Bank’s Bern headquarters, and the south wing of Zurich’s main train station. The images by photographers Adrian Scheidegger and Alexander Jaquemet, both longtime companions of the architects, demonstrate how the spaces they created gradually and naturally integrate with their environment. Writer Gianna Molinari joined Scheidegger and Jaquemet on their expeditions to Aebi & Vincent’s buildings. Her literary snapshots supplement the images in this volume, stimulating our imagination of the inner life of these structures and their occupants.
