Historically, we see the city as the cramped, crumbling core of development and culture, and the suburb as the vast outlying wasteland – convenient, but vacant. Contemporary urban design proves this wrong. Summary:
Historically, we see the city as the cramped, crumbling core of development and culture, and the suburb as the vast outlying wasteland – convenient, but vacant. Contemporary urban design proves this wrong. In New SubUrbanisms, Judith De Jong explains the on going "flattening" of the American Metropolis, as suburbs are becoming more like their central cities – and cities more like their suburbs through significant changes in spatial and formal practice as well as demographic and cultural changes. These revisionist practices are exemplified in the emergence of hybrid sub/urban conditions such as parking practices, the residential densification of suburbia, hyper-programmed public spaces and inner city big-box retail, among others.

Summary:
The late Italian artist and writer Enzo Mari (1932–2020) is perhaps most famed for his modernist and industrial furniture designs, such as the box chair and the “sof sof” chair, but he produced an expansive oeuvre in art across various mediums. This catalog, published for an exhibition at Galleria Massimo Minini, gathers the artist’s drawings, prints and sculptures. The works in the volume embody the fruits of Mari’s research into “programmed” or “algorithmic” art; he was especially interested in creating works that could be enjoyed diachronically. To that end, he created a series of models consisting of a programmed combination of prefabricated module elements; these sequences visually represent the passage of time.

"The bra". "The box kite". "The cat". "The milk carton". "The reclining Picasso". These are the playful names given to the eccentric beach houses of Andrew Geller. Built in the 1950s and 1960s, these vacation homes reflected the idea of summer leisure for a generation more concerned with fun on the beach than ostentatious display. For clients in the Hamptons, on the Jersey shore, and in New England, Geller built dozens of houses, most of wood and most on modest budgets. Geller, who worked with Raymond Loewy and directed the design of such modernist landmarks as the Lever House in New York, combined a modern interest in light, breeze, and functional living with playful form-making.

It is an absolutely ubiquitous object, even if most of us have no direct contact with it. But what is this thing? Where has it been, and where is it going? Craig Martin's book illuminates the “development of containerization”-including design history, standardization, aesthetics, and a surprising speculative discussion of the futurity of shipping containers. - See more at: http://www.bloomsbury.com/us/shipping-container-9781501303142/#sthash.2H0oxVN8.dpuf

Summary:
Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s (1868–1928) residential masterpiece, Hill House was designed and built for the publisher Walter Blackie between 1902 and 1904. Mackintosh and his wife Margaret created everything from the building itself to the furniture and textiles within. A prominent example of the Modern Style (British Art Nouveau), this iconic building was suffering prolonged decay from more than a century of weather damage. London-based architectural practice Carmody Groarke has built an innovative stainless steel chainmail mesh known as ''The Box,'' to temporarily encase Hill House. This structure is intended to halt the decay of Hill House while maintaining access for visitors and providing time for the restoration of this gem in Scotland’s architectural heritage.
